On Monday, October the 9th 2015, Catalan parliament approved a 18 months process to begin the secession from Spain.
Mr Rajoy, the Spain PM, seized the constitutional court of Spain to settle on the decision. But this court's legitimacy won't likely be recognized by the Catalan parliament.
According to polls, Catalan are evenly split on whether to secede.

As far as I'm concerned, it is illegal for Catalonia to become independent, and I don't think they will be able to change the Constitution so that they can become indeed independent, as all Spanish citizens should be allowed to vote if that was the case. It's going to be a big deal this days to see how it all turns out, and it's also going to cause a lot of polemics between Spanish people. It already is... Hope it does turn out fine without that much of a problem.

But laws make sense as long as people consider it. The 1968 French constitution was passed illegally for example.
If Catalonia already organizes its ability to stand alone, and that people protest, nothing dismisses that in a few year the Spanish gov. will eventually let it become independent.
