‘I don’t know why you’re dressed up because Queen Elsa isn’t black’ (61)

This isn't new... We've hear these kind of stories time and time before. Sometimes it's about race, sometimes it's as simple as a boy liking bows in his hair. These stories aren't anything new...but they never stop being incredibly offensive, heartbreaking, and enraging.

A callous racist attack has left a three-year-old girl in tears at a Disney event in Melbourne after she dressed up in her favorite Queen Elsa costume, only to be told she shouldn’t have as ‘Queen Elsa isn't black'.

After taking her daughter Samara,to a Disney-themed children’s event at Watergardens shopping centre in Taylors Lakes, a woman in line turn to the 3-year old and spoke these horrifying words: 'The lady in front of us turned around to Samara and said "I don’t know why you’re dressed up for because Queen Elsa isn’t black",' Ms Muir said.

'I asked the woman what she meant by the comment and then one of the woman’s young daughters screwed up her face, she pointed at Samara and said "you’re black and black is ugly".

Samara, was deeply affected and had to be comforted by her mother Rachel after the blatant racist attack. She was even due to go her Aboriginal dance class the next day, but she didn’t want to go. When her mother asked why, she replied: ‘Because I’m black.’

Fortunately, it now seems like little Samara's nightmare is going to have a fairy tale ending as Disney on Ice Dare to Dream has also invited the little girl along to the show. And she won't just see it - they want her to appear in it too; the sweet, black Queen Elsa on skates.

This hits close to home for me since my sister (African American) was recently casted in a school play as Queen Elsa.

It hurts my heart to think of someone walking up and insulting her just for being a certain skin tone, and then having to not only try to explain why someone would say that, but then tell them that this is something they'll have to expect more of in the future for as long as they live. These are talks we in time actually have to have with our children, but...not at 3-years old...

That's sad. I don't see why someone's skin color should be a reason to keep them from dressing as their favorite character. It's shameful that a grown woman would say that to a 3-year old. The little girl came the event to have fun and she gets told that??? How awful!!! It's sad to say but this reminds me of the cosplay world a bit.

I mean, I've heard stories about how cosplayers who were black have received the same remarks as this girl. Hell, I've gone to school a few times and when kids find out I like cosplay and stuff, I get told "That's not what black people do. It's a white people thing." WTF DOES THAT MEAN??? If you want to look like your favorite character even just for a day, you should be able to! Skin shouldn't be a factor! It shouldn't matter if you're hispanic, vietnamese, or whatever. Sadly, we have ignorant people who think otherwise which is enraging.

I'm glad that girl gets the chance to enjoy herself with the Disney on Ice people. She deserves it. No one should have to be told they can't be something because of race, especially children.

Let's say, that she was right, and Elsa is in fact white (which she is of course, I'm saying that without any racial discrimination, I'm just stating a fact). What I think the real problem is, is that even if someone's costume or appearance isn't perfect, outsiders still shouldn't comment on it, it's got nothing to do with them. It's not a cosplay contest for christ's sake. If someone looks like crap on a bad workday or his clothing is just kinda tasteless you don't go over to that person either to tell him "God Mike, you really look like crap!"

9 Name: Inuhakka !.5xqXJfr96 : 2015-07-27 13:11 ID:5mqlO8qA [Del]

>>8 Yeah, it's clearly because they harbor some sort of unreasonable resentment towards black people, otherwise you wouldn't say anything.

To me, it's the tasteless equivalent of telling someone "Sorry, but Queen Elsa was a lot skinnier than you. I think you look too big to dress up as her".

Like, fuck off, eh? There's just nothing reasonable or excusable about that.

We need to do something about this, but what?

This has been a bit of a problem in the cosplay community for a while now. It doesn't matter what race, color, or gender you are, you can dress like any character you want. What happened to that little girl sadly happens more than you would think. Its sad that this had to happen to her!

>>11 Indeed it is sad what happened to that little girl and really should never have happen in the first place, and that goes to all small children.

on the other note about cosplay community is that you have different groups with in it,

First off you get the fairly casual cosplayers who don't care who or what you look like and just have fun.

Secondly you get people who are more serious cosplayers who may or may not care what you look like, but will choose characters that fit with their own boy type and skin colour,

Thirdly last but not least the purest cosplayers who will not only choose a character that they can pull off but will most likely be in character and acting as the one they are cosplaying as.

Greetings everyone!

We all know that we should accept one another no matter our race, gender, sexuality, etc. etc. And I'm happy all of us on this thread agree. However, sometimes lecturing these nasty kinds of narrow-minded people just doesn't change their opinions sometimes. Some people can be so stubborn.
Although we should always voice our opinions on these unfortunate matter, I believe we should all work towards raising/teaching every child as EARLY AS POSSIBLE, true "acceptance of all kinds".
I bet that little girl who mocked 'Queen Elsa' was a sweet girl inside but sadly raised with the wrong beauty standards and nasty opinion. Let's all aim to help mold young kids minds to be more accepting and loving!

17 Name: ninihaha : 2015-08-01 17:33 ID:EtZWqa+i [Del]

I think these kinds o poeple shouldn't teach theyr children to be like them, if they don't want to talk and convive with other races, cultures and religions it's theyr problem but pasing that on to theyr kids that is what's wrong.
For example if you grow up learning that cakes are bad you wont like cakes, just because that's hw you have been taught and expeacially at such a young age it's even more complicated, i have a 3 years old niece and my sister allways gives her what she wants but when she is with me and i refuse to give her the thing she wants, she starts hitting me, of couse i stop her, but she's like that because her mother taught her so.
What if that little girl never regains her self-confidence (i think hat's how it's written?)she would feel bad about herself and when she grows older it can even lead to depression and other things.
So i think parents should teach their kids how to be open minded about these things.

I wasn't going to post here, but thread is surprisingly civil. Allow me to be the first to call that woman a grade A bitch.

I've never been unfortunate enough to have experiences with such blatant racism, but it's stories like this that really drive show me how ugly it is in its blatant disregard for the humanity of others. That woman knew what she was doing to that poor little girl, and she just went for it. I mean, it takes a special kind of heartless to corrupt the innocence of a young child. It feels almost inhuman.

And she's fucking up her own children too. What an absolute cunt.

20 Name: Roma Maia : 2015-08-04 17:59 ID:82tEVFhG [Del]

These people just depress me honestly. Who cares? Gender, race, age? Why do people have to be so rude to others? Why are those rude people in line even at an event like that?

21 Name: neko : 2015-08-04 19:26 ID:KJ0jhYyy [Del]

what was that woman thinking? What did she achieve by being so racist? Honestly, if it bothered her so much that someone in line was black, she should have either left or be a sensible person about it and ignored them. What she did was make the little girl feel weak. I would have thrown her off the face of the earth.

22 Name: Delphi : 2015-08-05 07:23 ID:W1u9j4yD [Del]

This is horrible! That poor little girl!
People need to learn that skin is only so deep, and that under it, we're all the same.
Sadly there's just so much hate in the world and there's not much we can do about, if a person doesn't want to change their views we can't make them.
But somewhere we can start is by teaching young children that everybody is born and dies equal, so in life we should all be equal too. That way when the racist and prejudice people die, only the educated youth will be left behind. However, this kind of thing is not easy...
Our children should be taught to love everyone, not hate some people based on skin, race or sexuality.

I can't believe this kind of thing is still happening in the world it is completely wrong. How would that person like it if someone made a slander remark at her for being white it truly breaks my heart to hear crap like this. Especially when the subject being slandered is a little girl! This is the kind of thing we need to stand up against and call people out for their mistakes! Everyone was created equal in the eyes of God, I just wish we saw everyone as equals.

What kind of person crushes a little girl's self esteem on a whim like that?!?

25 Name: MortalGirl !wzQWJM.2Gs : 2015-08-09 01:45 ID:bhkO8vP2 [Del]

This just makes me so angry and frustrated. I just can't see how anyone can like themselves after saying something like that! We are all human, our diversity is what makes us all special. It's just so heartless and cruel. This kind of thing needs to end. People are so stuck on appearance and self betterment. And for other children to be raised on this mentality is just appalling. Skin color does not decide anything, and it should never hold anyone back. That girl? She'll probably never forget something like that. Words can damage a person's self esteem for a long time, if not forever. >.<

It's disappointing that even after all of the progress we've made, there are still people in the word who feel it's necessary to ruin a girl's day simply because she had a different shade of skin. *sigh* what a world.

I cant blame the kid because she didnt know any better, but the mother did and should have acted like the adult she is. Really thats not something anyone should say to anyone let alone say to a childs face. I dont expect people to change the way they think, I do how ever expect them to watch what they say and keep those thought to themselfs.

It's kinda "funny" for me. I mean, not the racism, of course I hate it. But I'm a white guy and personally I really like darker skinned girls, and I don't just mean tan.

But yeah, of course talking about the racism itself, I don't really think it can be stopped. However, people should stand up against it as much as they/we can; that's all I can say about it.

40 Name: Cynical TIme Traveler : 2015-08-26 10:39 ID:KG6iU8n1 [Del]

This kind of news always gets to me. I am not "black" but my skin is dark so that no one would ever mistake me as white. I wonder does it say anything about anyone standing up for the girl and her mother?! I'm not speaking for everyone with dark skin, but I live in a mostly white populated area of Michigan (for god sake we have a town literally named "Holland" ((lovely place thought))) and sometimes I really cant help how I am the only colored girl on my sports team or in my class besides maybe three or four other girls and boys, I wish this person didn't just make it so incredibly clear that that innocent little girl was of different color so horrifically to her. In all honesty, I have never had the nerve to go during Halloween as a Disney princess or vampire because of the color of my own skin. This girl is much braver than I ever was and have been and she did not deserve what was said to her

Those who think racism is disgusting and wrong simply do not understand how humans work and are ignorant to the facts. Whilst you may not have been brought up to think that other races are "inferior" and that all races should be equal, everybody should be equal and have equal rights" there are those who have been raised and nurtured into believing the opposite. And whilst you say that they are living in the last century, they need to grow up and accept how the world is now. You don't realize, and one day will realize, that changing your perspective and opinions on things is not as easy as it seems. Not everyone has the mental fortitude to suddenly believe and think that the views they have been living their life on, the views that have lead them to the current point of their life were wrong. That is something not everybody can do. And that is why those "disgusting racists" are not as evil as you may think.

50 Name: Fray !W1Nq.7lGn2 : 2015-09-05 23:50 ID:efH5pcdV [Del]

>>49 Ya make good points there, it's true. Change is a very hard thing for people to get through, and hatred and ignorance are human nature. I think everyone understands that though, even an elementary school kid can tell you that's just how people work. Just because it's human nature, and there's still a human side to these people, doesn't make it any less disgusting or wrong though.

You act like it's magically not wrong just because "people were raised" to believe it. Murder is wrong, but people before were raised into believing it's alright to kill, like back many years ago in the West.

While you have valid point don't label people as being ignorant to something wrong just because "they" are too ignorant to teach themselves.

52 Name: Tegura : 2015-09-07 16:15 ID:R6arYnLL [Del]

It's only your opinions that racism and killing is wrong. Human morals have developed over time but in reality there is no set right or wrong, it's just what the majority believes in. 100 years ago and you wouldn't be complaining about racism because it was not seen as morally wrong as it is today. Are you able to change your view so that you see racism as the correct thing? No, didn't think so. Whilst you call it ignorant for people to not teach themselves that racism is wrong, they can say the same exact thing to you. There is no right or wrong in this world. Everything you believe is true because in the end, nobody can force you to believe otherwise. You can only change your view from experience.
