The regulatory body responsible for education standards in Victorian schools is investigating the Al-Taqwa Islamic college, following reports that the principal banned female students from cross-country running because he believed it may cause them to “lose their virginity”.

The deputy premier and education minister, James Merlino, confirmed on Thursday morning that the Victorian Registration and Qualifications Authority was investigating the claims.

Guardian Australia has contacted the college, in the western Melbourne suburb of Truganina, for comment.

According to Fairfax, a former teacher said the ban was implemented because of principal Omar Hallak’s belief that if females ran excessively, they could “lose their virginity”.

The teacher reportedly wrote to the state and federal education minister, saying; “The principal believes that there is scientific evidence to indicate that if girls injure themselves, such as break their leg while playing soccer, it could render them infertile”...

Oh wait... WHAT!?
Sport injuries can cause you to lose virginity and make you infertile? This is illogical.

First, the definition of virginity can be different for many people. Some people consider breaking the hymen as losing virginity but others might consider that participating in actual sexual activities as losing their virginity.

Secondly, breaking of your hymen does not equal to becoming infertile! Many girls lost their virginity through sports like horse riding yet they can still give birth to young healthy babies.

I cannot comprehend his logic...

I heard this on the radio driving home today. Needless to say, I had a good laugh.

"And girls are being banned from participating in running activities at an Islamic college in Melbourne due to fears that they may accidentally lose their virginities."

I love stupid.

First of all, it's not like the hymen is a built-in virginity detector. I don't recall what its purpose is, but it has one that is wholly unrelated to sex. It stops being useful around adolescence, where it begins to break down to allow periods to happen.

Secondly, infertility is either present at birth, or caused by severe damage to either the ovaries or Fallopian (Spelling?) tubes. Most normal activities such as sports won't even affect them; only something atypical, such as a deliberate attack at those organs, could damage them enough to cause infertility.

This level of stupid is what I've come to expect from organized religion.

Ah btw for the sake of an unbiased news report I'll personally go ask someone from there what the actual story is and if it's even in play.

Thanks for letting us know Yuukio!
