U.S.: Women on the $20 bill (82)

1 Name: Trinity-Obba : 2015-03-25 15:55 ID:e8rgFItm [Del]

A recent article in the newspaper "The New York Times" has announced that the United States might eliminate Andrew Jackson's face from the $20 bill and exchange it with a woman with historical value. However, nobody can agree on who to change him with so an online poll has been published to vote between the most recognized women in U.S. history. The poll is in the link below for anyone whom is interested in voting. May the best female win.

I'm all for taking Jackson off the bill but doing so just to put a woman's face on it doesn't sit well with me.

3 Name: midsxeph : 2015-03-25 20:09 ID:JhB+7tpe [Del]

Fuck this. There's a right way to do things, and then there's a wrong.

4 Name: zero : 2015-03-25 21:06 ID:J6V+SVb9 [Del]

a woman doesn't deserve to replace one of our great presidents only a man should be on money

5 Name: Kou-Sama : 2015-03-25 21:09 ID:a1LMj71x [Del]

>>2 and >>3

Guys, we can't really do much about this. Feminist people will always be feminist people. I get that this is the worst possible way and reason to get rid of Jackson from the $20 but right now we can't do shit about it...

6 Name: Inti : 2015-03-25 21:12 ID:5ywcZods [Del]

Jackson is not even a president and as a person he was not that great of a person

7 Name: J : 2015-03-25 22:22 ID:/dhQdw72 [Del]

What do you mean Jackson isn't a president?

8 Name: Shadeslayer914 : 2015-03-26 10:21 ID:ibMNaMJA [Del]

Now, I'm no sexist but, someone, anyone, tell me something that a woman has ever done that is in any way special. I'm not saying women aren't as good as men, but I am saying that for the progress of humans as a species, they have been either(a) worthless or (b) detrimental to it. They haven't done anything that a man couldn't. They shouldn't be rewarded for their bitching.

9 Name: mids : 2015-03-26 10:36 ID:6QWTrYM5 [Del]

>>8 They will probably put a female who addressed some stupid social problems.

10 Name: Inti : 2015-03-26 10:36 ID:7k8b44MK [Del]

Oh whoops my bad either way he was not that great of a person.

11 Name: Death Duelist : 2015-03-26 10:36 ID:VuAR8akC [Del]

Wow... How is that not sexist. Claiming that all women are worthless and detrimental... There is historical debate about that claims ancient Mesopotamian women were first to ferment things. AKA beer. Now is debatable that that's not detrimental to society BUT beer is one of the presumed reason that humans turned to agriculture for food. Therefore women changed humans from hunter gatherers to farmers. So women changed the whole work, brah.

12 Name: Shadeslayer914 : 2015-03-26 10:42 ID:ibMNaMJA [Del]

I was not saying ALL women are detrimental, dipshit. Just saying that historically speaking when you hear about women, odds are they aren't doing something positive. OBVIOUSLY THERE ARE EXCEPTIONS. Welcome to life.

13 Name: Shadeslayer914 : 2015-03-26 10:46 ID:ibMNaMJA [Del]

Mesopotomian women dont count for agriculutral achivement, because that would have happened somewhere else, even if your speculation was correct.

14 Name: Death Duelist : 2015-03-26 10:47 ID:VuAR8akC [Del]

Sounds like you were. But in your logic men really shouldn't be rewarded either. I'm yet to see anything that men have done that didn't really involve bitching either. All progress in humanity pretty much involves bitching in some way. So it's really humanity in general that's guilty of that.

15 Name: Shadeslayer914 : 2015-03-26 10:51 ID:ibMNaMJA [Del]

Common ground found. Humans bitch. Humanity's a bitch. This is my new stance. All suck. 10/10.

16 Name: Shadeslayer914 : 2015-03-26 10:52 ID:ibMNaMJA [Del]

Except... that last episode of Parasyte makes me not want to say that....

Yeah... Damn that anime is thought provoking.

Theres only one women, (in my opinion) that could possibly deserve to replace Jackson. That woman is none other, than Amelia Earhart.

>>19 Creating the concept of algorithms for computer science? Or, perhaps making the theorem that would be essential to creating the theories of general and special relativity? Are these not noteworthy things that advanced society?

I am guessing the ignorance >>18 is talking about is about "they have been either(a) worthless or (b) detrimental to it". It has already been mentioned, but everything you've said about women also applies to men. Most aren't contributors, couldn't do anything the other gender couldn't themselves, etc applies to almost everyone in the world.

However, I think your point was that women shouldn't get someone on a bill just because they are women, because as a gender they haven't been outstanding compared to men? Am I reading that right?

As for the bill, replacing him with a woman just because there aren't any women may not be the right thing. I'm honestly not too sure what reason there is to put someone on the bill, popular opinion? Or is there some other legal process?

22 Name: TechnoHedgehog : 2015-03-27 08:27 ID:Td3OT4yS [Del]

Now, the only thing that have against this is, Isn't Andrew Jackson the guy who founded the Treasury, why shouldn't he be on the bill, im no historian, so most likely im wrong.

23 Name: Elucidator : 2015-03-27 19:42 ID:2VL4OZi3 [Del]

We were talking about this in my government class today

In short, we ended up nominating Oprah Winfrey as the replacement

it would be great if that happened

No I think Eleanor Roosevelt should be an appropriate and most deserving choice as currency.

27 Name: Leigha Moscove !9tSeSkSEz2 : 2015-03-29 15:10 ID:xZY/6d2Y [Del]

I disagree. While I get the point and think it's a good one, why only do this for womem?

Why not put a black person on US money? I'm sure we can all agree that MLK did a lot for the US (or, you know, Obama is a president if you want it presidents only).

I'm sure that there's women out there that did something for the US. One of the presidents wives perhaps? Smoe of them have done good things for the US...

28 Name: midsxeph : 2015-03-29 16:13 ID:YemRe8SC [Del]

Yeah, let's just put Rosa Parks or Michelle Obama on the twenty dollar bill instead. NIGGA WOMEN.

29 Name: Magnolia!2ipznOcc5g : 2015-03-29 17:19 ID:XvOMGAnd [Del]

>>27 Someone before said that we should change all of the money, and I'd like that. We keep the 20 for women because of the symbolism explained on the site. Every 50-100 years we make a vote to change the currency. If it effects the economy, let me know, but I mean, I still use 50c coins and I just got a Susan B. dollar recently.

>>27 Instead of just putting a minority or woman on the bill, why not make a list of the greatest contributors to American history in the order of importance and put the first who isn't already on a bill there? Or even rotate them out every decade to go down the list?

Why not take people off all the money?

Nothing to complain about.

33 Name: Shikato : 2015-03-30 13:54 ID:xg2SIVO7 [Del]

It amazes me how there are so many negative thoughts about this. Like I'm really hoping some of you are being sarcastic because women have every right to be on a bill just as much as a man does. The founder of the Red Cross Clara "Angel of the Battlefield" Barton is a great candidate as well as Rosa Parks. Both fought for freedom for everyone and one of them even went to the front lines of the civil war to save lives.

34 Name: XCross : 2015-03-30 14:28 ID:kmJhLUEM [Del]

I think we should leave it as it is as people are used to it being Jackson and he is far past deserving of his placement on the bill.

35 Name: Kasumi Hayashi : 2015-03-30 16:34 ID:CnjKiU1z [Del]

It would be a nice change to have a woman's face on a bill, but I would never look at a $20 bill the same way again.

36 Name: Magnolia!2ipznOcc5g : 2015-03-30 19:06 ID:XvOMGAnd [Del]

>>34 You did not read the damn reason WHY he's being replaced. His betrayal to the Indians lead to the Trail of Tears. "Deserving" my ass.

Also, people use too often the excuse of "people being used to it", so we shouldn't change it.

Southerners were used to owning slaves.
Men were used to women not being able to vote or be bread winners.
We /seriously/ cannot keep using that excuse.

37 Name: Inuhakka !inb4CaTsQw : 2015-03-30 19:19 ID:GZ+MuQCf [Del]

>>30 Who compiles the list? How do we avoid bias?
It seems like there's been some bias in the selection process up to this point considering the spread of different races, genders, etc. on the bills thusfar. Maybe there hasn't, but it certainly seems that way.

I don't see why we would replace someone. I mean, women on money; great! Thats awesome! But taking someone off, thats rude and demeaning. We should respect those who were once incharge, doing what they thought was best at the time.

40 Name: Magnolia!2ipznOcc5g : 2015-04-01 15:19 ID:XvOMGAnd [Del]

I thought it would be the people; like a site saying enter in the name of the person you would like, and then the top 6 get to be on the $1, $5, $10, $20, & $50, $100. Not sure how to specifically reserve a spot for a woman's placing on the bill- and if we did, does that mean women can ONLY be on the $20?
Fuck humanity, man. We need to stop specializing in making mountains out of mole hills.

Agreed.

I don't agree with replacing folks either, but Jackson was a drunk, and was noted for being a person of poor character. Just because he made it to the top means nothing, and he is probably the most replaceable person on money.

I personally vote to take people off of our currency all together, and use this.

The $20 bill is going to stay the way it is. Presidents go on the common money. But I see women on money more often than you'd think. Susan B. Anthony, Sacagawea, Helen Keller, they're all on coins.
I can think of a few men who should be on more currency and aren't. Kennedy deserves more than the half dollar, for one thing. So currency isn't fair in general. If we had more types of bills and coins, then we would have more surfaces for famous faces. But as it is, we only have so many types of dollars and coins.

71 Name: Magnolia : 2015-04-20 11:37 ID:0Xuaw5ZE [Del]

>>70 Uhhh Ben Franklin was never a president. You sound like you're just saying that cuz you don't want a woman on a US Dollar. Saying women shouldn't be on "common money" is a pretty...unique way of thinking.

72 Name: Magnolia : 2015-04-20 11:42 ID:XvOMGAnd [Del]

By the way, it's not like those three coins were distributed at the same time... It would. After a coin loses popularity and is removed from circulation, another one replaces it.

So that's still technically one woman on one coin. The same coin at that. There are quite a few people who disagree with changing out the faces of the president because they like things to stay the same, yet several faces have appeared on the dollar coin.

True, Ben Franklin was a founding father not a president. But it doesn't sound like he doesn't want women on currency. He says it's not fair in general because there are both great men and women who are not on currency.
Also, those three women are not all on the same coin. Some quick research shows that Sacagawea is still, today, printed onto new dollar coins, while Helen Keller can be found on some Alabama quarters.

75 Post deleted by user.

76 Name: Magnolia : 2015-04-21 18:26 ID:XvOMGAnd [Del]

>>74 I DID research. Sacagawea is no longer being printed (I believe since 2011). I was mistaken on the Hellen Keller one, so you can have that, but that would still be 2 women on the same coin.

His argument on why there shouldn't be more women on currency "because it isn't fair" didn't even make sense. Especially when he stated that Kennedy deserved more than the 50c coin. You've gotta figure, there's pennies, nickels, dimes, quarters, dollar coins, and $1, $5, $10, $20, $50, $100 bills. Saying it's "not fair" for a historical female figure to be on one bill doesn't make much sense.

As >>55 stated, Swedish currency will soon have 3/6 bills featuring women.
50/50
Doesn't that sound more fair?
Changing one US bill to feature a woman is unfair?
And some quick reading of earlier posts would tell you that there are people who are in favor of changing the faces on all the bills. Personally, I was in favor of doing that every 50 years.

Well shit, now I remember why I stopped coming to this website. I just peeked back in to see what was going on in here and dang! am I surprised. The same old people doing the same old things. How are you literally gonna come to the same website, day in and day out, for 3+ years? How boring is that?

Also this discussion is stupid and extremely backward. I would say to get your heads out of your asses but it seems that they've been there for years.
