It was said to hear such a thing happen, the only thing being blamed on is lack of police but there definitely is something missing as to what caused people to stampede. Can't seem to find anything mentioning a likely cause.

I think the police presence looks pretty intensive maybe
that had something to do with it?

Sorry I cant get my thoughts all out at once but does it look to anyone else like they are corralling people in their own streets?

>>10 Someone else also said they heard it was from money being thrown in the air. That's even worse if it's fake because then those people died for absolutely nothing.

The greediness of the people is what killed them, they trampled eachother to get the money right?so when they trampled eachother they crushed the others :( (Oh and, yesterday one of my friends got ahold of my computer while i was on the site so good thing he doesnt know the password)

Ah yes this news I know what happened. Basically people where at The Bund (外滩)for the countdown, and it was alr very crowded then. Then, this woman stood up and started throwing fake money down. People tried to graab all the money, causing a stampede with 35 casualties and 45 injured. It was a pretty big incident tho 0-0

So it was fake money, what a shame, what was that woman thinking was going to happen in the midst of such a huge crowd.

I'm so sorry that recently most people have become so greedy and insensitive even willing to kill or trample underfoot falishivyh for money. I am very sorry for the people whose relatives or friends. and maybe even loved died in this tragedy starshno. Although this case and terrible about it but everyone should remember as a lesson. We grieve and remember

This looks like a good reason for the government in china to sort out the economy, improve the quality of life, and find ways to make the community feel safe. There were clearly too many people in one place, and due to the poverty in china, many people wanted the money. I also imagine that some people who didn't know what was going on must have been quite afraid and so acted irrationally during the stampede.
This whole story is a real shame. If something like that happens again, the government there (and possibly even other countries) would need to come up with an effective solution.

They say the stampede started when someone started throwing fake money bills on the top of the building? People thought it was real money so they started to go in that spot. That's too much for a troll.

The fake money was actually coupons that people thought were monetary bank notes. This was a minor issue, but not the fundamental issue.

The real cause of the problem was that the government banned a Christmas and New Years celebration, which caused the people to be restless. The majority killed were young students from ages 20 - 25, so I would assume they just wanted to have a good time that night. So 300,000 people filled into the public square to see a light show that was based upon rumor, so everybody was confused to exactly where it would happen. As the time neared, the accident occurred approximately 30 minutes before midnight, when people were trying to find a "better view" of the supposed show. In addition there was a flight of stairs that caused congestion, which would have caused massive injuries to the people moving up and down them.

Gathered from sources from various news media and live witness accounts.

All in all, my condolences to the families of those who were lost and inured in this terrible accident. Such things wouldn't happen if people were more logical, cognitive, and not self-serving.

>>21>>22 I live in Shanghai. I never heard of the coupons in the local news source or on Huffington Post...

And the light show wasn't based upon rumor. Too many people came during the 2014 New Years, so they made it a private event. The government didn't inform the public enough that it was a private event only, and those who had not paid in advance would not be able to come.

School girl who were pressed too tightly into the crowd fainted, and they fell off the stairs (which by the way, did not have railing; that isn't uncommon around here). When you see a plummeting body right before your eyes, you immediately start pushing down, and people who can't move fast enough either fall off the stairs or get trampled.

Shanghai: dozens killed and injured in stampede at new year celebrations

According to the guardian the authorities aren't quite sure if fake money bills were really the cause for this incident. I've read in another newspaper that some nightclub is said to have thrown fake $100 bills as a gag, but I'm not sure if it's true.
