My prayers, thoughts, and condolences to the family of those on the flight and to those affected. Bad luck for Malaysian based airlines... This will be the third incidence of an airplane accident from a flight related to those airlines. Terrible luck and I hope the best for them.

An engaged couple on holiday with the fiance's parents and a family of four are among the victims of the doomed AirAsia flight that crashed into the sea.

Contact was lost with air traffic control during a storm on Sunday as Flight QZ8501 headed to Singapore from the Indonesian city of Surabaya with 162 people on board.

Nearly all those on the plane were Indonesian, but they also included three from South Korea, and one each from the UK, Malaysia, France and Singapore

Mamorou, AirAsia is a Malaysian based airline company headquartered in Kuala Lumpar, Malaysia. So technically it is a Malaysian airline, even though it has several branches of subsidiaries. For example, in this case the airline was part of AirAsia Indonesia, which Indonesia owns 51% of the stock, and Malaysia owns 49%. Overall, though that's insignificant in the grand scheme of things, and we should just pray for the families who were affected.

What is wrong with air flight these days... shouldn't there be more check ups of engines and safety?

look at the consecutive plane crash week after week.

>>23 It didn't seem to be a problem with the engines or the like. Any normal plane would have trouble flying through a serious storm. So many things could've been the cause but I don't think we'll ever know the full story.

This is an absolutely terrible event, but I read something in the news that make me a little annoyed....

One of the victims, Kevin Alexander Soetjipto, was recovered and sent back to his aunt and uncle for a proper funeral while the authorities continue the search for the rest of his family. In an interview, his uncle seems enraged at how badly AirAsia was handling the situation. When asked why- he says "I had to pay for the funeral all by myself. I was promised Rp 2 Milliar/person (Approximately $158228.20), but was offered a Down Payment of only Rp 300 juta ($23725). There isn't such a term as 'Down Payment', we should get everything. I bet they are trying to hide something from us."

First off, AirAsia are dealing with this pretty well. They are doing their best to speed up the identification process, and the fact that they are already offering DP's to the victims family only a few days after the crash is quite impressive when you look at the situation they're in. I doubt AirAsia are hiding anything from these families....Also, other families say that they were never promised the amount of money the interviewee claimed to be promised- so its most likely the Newspaper's spreading rumors and conspiracies for a good story. AirAsia also requested that the media stop hassling grieving family members for interviews. One last thing....Of course the families would be offered only a part of the money first- insurance agencies can't just get money in the blink of an eye..It takes time. The fact that this man is complaining about the money gives me the impression that he's money grabbing- even if that isn't the case and he just needs it for the funeral....

(Note: The quote above is just a rough translation and summary of the whole story.)
(Note 2: Apparently the funerals were payed for, but if a family wanted to change rooms they had to pay, which is what happened here(?). I haven't confirmed this fact, so I'm not adding this to my statements.)

If you think I'm mistaken, or want to clarify something..I'm open to any opinions or input you have on this issue. Once again, this crash has been devastating to families and friends...So my best wishes are with them.

>>23 The plane is relatively new and well maintained. The pilot has had thousands of flight hours- 7000 of which were with AirAsia. Although airlines are using modern technology to deal with clouds and storms, it should still be avoided at all costs.
The pilots requested a new higher flight altitude to avoid the clouds, but another plane was to fly above that area, so the request was denied. They had no choice but to fly through it.

I regularly fly with Airasia and apart from smashing my laptop to pieces 1 time they're a really good airline, compared with other airlines the planes are maintained (in cabin, I don't check the mechanics) to a really high standard and I feel very safe on every flight I take with them. (about 4 a year)
