A South Carolina police officer, Sean Groubert, was fired and criminally charged after firing on an unarmed black man. The man was not wearing a seatbelt, and the officer asked the man to get his license. As he reached inside his car to get it, the officer suddenly fired 3 shots and hit the man in the hip. The entire incident was caught on the officer's dash-cam, and can be viewed at either source. It very clearly shows the man with his hands high in the air, saying "I was just getting my license". He also apologizes repeatedly, and asks, "Sir, why was I shot? All I did was reach for my license."

He charged with assault and battery of a high and aggravated nature, and could get up to 20 years in prison.

Racist cop I think.

>>3 No, I think he's just reactive and fearful. When the man finally shows he had a wallet, the cop gets really apologetic really quickly.

What makes me pretty frustrated, though, is that the only reason the police officer is being charged is because it was caught on camera. If it were not, and the man had actually died, it would have gone down as "The man dove into his car to get what looked like a gun after the officer told him to step out of the car. He had no choice but to open fire."

Basically, it's looking like anything that gets filmed is obviously the cop's fault, but anything else not on tape can be explained away in favor of the officer. I used to hold a little more trust in the police force, but after hearing that cop say the guy 'dove headfirst into the car' when he was asked to get his license, then 'jumped back out' after the cop pulled his gun, I don't really have much anymore.

>>5 No, I don't think that's true. First, there's a very high likelihood the man would have been killed, given the officer shot at him. It's a very one-sided interview if there's only one story. Second, who are the police more likely to believe? A police officer, or a citizen?

We've seen this before, and in most cases it seems authorities determine the police officer is innocent.

They also already determined he was getting his wallet and that's what he had in his hand, as I mentioned. There was no gun.
