Pakistani Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif has described the stoning to death of a woman by her family in front of a Lahore court as "totally unacceptable".

Farzana Parveen, who was three months pregnant, was pelted with bricks and bludgeoned by relatives furious because she married against their wishes.

Her husband told the BBC that police simply stood by during the attack.

Lahore's police chief has denied this and said Ms Parveen had been killed by the time police arrived at the scene.

There are hundreds of so-called "honour killings" in Pakistan each year.

This incident has prompted particular outrage as it took place in daylight while police and members of the public reportedly stood by and did nothing to save her.
'Honour' killings in PakistanIn 2013, 869 women murdered in so called "honour killings"

Campaigners say real number is likely to be much higher

Of these, 359 were so called "Karo Kari" cases, whereby family members consider themselves authorized to kill offending relatives to restore honour

Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif has ordered the chief minister of Punjab province to take "immediate action" and submit a report by Thursday evening.

Its not really the government but the culture in itself. The culture has unfortunately spread to the government just like the ones in other countries. Although just like India the culture needs a drastic change or more people will be killed.

>>6 I don't think culture can be changed. I think their government needs to be less corrupt. The people are against these 'honour killings', as you can see.

Its more of a society thing then corruption and culture thing although there are issues in both there i assure you. They live in a diffrent place and the only way to change the way they do things is to stop the mass majority from believing in it.Then it will end but that takes time and no amoute of international pressure will change it unfortionally

I agree, as barbaric as this may sound, it's how these people and their forefathers have lived. We really can't do a lot. Only through education can such a social problem be removed.
