People like to assume people that have gone through hell are monsters and that normal people would never do that scary stuff. It makes them feel better, because the problem isn't them being shitty to other people and other people breaking, the problem is 'people like him'. It makes them feel better because they think they're safe at home with normal people, when in reality if resources were scarce enough, your own friends and neighbors would kill you in an instant. Yes he is somehow potrayed as a criminal and paticularly not given a chance to explain himself.
However by saying he might be bullied or harassed might be the wrong word to use. In his perspective he might feel like he is being tormented or bullied

However it is not right to ASSUME he was BEING bullied. Eventhough he might be autistic or have certain disorders it does not mean that smth big caused him to breakdown. It could have been a One moment thing

What he decide was to most likely choose homicide over suicide , which subsided his role he played in this crime. If he had chosen suicide, which is wrong and terrible and serious, the bullies would be potrayed as monsters. Yet he might have wanted to choose his own path.

Since it would have been a great story to strenghten the media or newspapers(bloggers/reporters) popularity and reputation. People emphasize on his atrocity and lesser of his explanation.

Basically they are trying to make use of how society believes that how humans should act with care, kindness and pity to create or divide good and bad as simply as possible
