On Wednesday there were clashes between pro- and anti-Russian protesters in Simferopol

Ukrainian interim President Olexander Turchynov has warned Russia against any "military aggression" in Crimea.

He said Russia's troops from Russia's Black Sea Fleet should not move outside their naval base in Sevastopol.

The warning comes after unknown armed men seized Crimea's regional parliament and the government headquarters of the autonomous Russian-majority region.

Meanwhile, the Crimean parliament has said it wants to hold a referendum on greater self-rule.

Such a vote would be a challenge to the new powers in the Ukraine capital Kiev, the BBC's Mark Lowen reports from the Crimean regional capital Simferopol.

I have close friends in Crimea, so I've been watching this pretty closely. Blah.

There's a chance of there being another WW if Russia keeps being a faggot, by the way. The majority of UE agreed to ostracize Russia (and probably its closer allies) economically if Russia doesn't back the fuck out of Ukraine, but Putin still approved military action against them (though it hasn't been put into motion yet). Ukraine publicly asked that they want more than political support and are asking for other countries to prepare to give military support against Russia if it continues escalating. (This is according to CNN, if I'm remembering right. I don't have a link atm.) I'm curious to know what China's stance on this whole thing is going to be.

pocket battles skirmish happen all the time that we don't get to hear or know about.

Also it's more the likely that Russia is going to flex its muscles a little bit, but wont fully commit to an all out war.

Ukraine crisis: Russia vows troops will stay
Previous

Russia has vowed its troops will remain in Ukraine to protect Russian interests and citizens until the political situation has been "normalised".
Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said Russia was defending human rights against "ultra-nationalist threats".

Russia is now in de facto military control of the Crimea region, despite Western condemnation of a "violation of Ukraine's sovereignty".

Ukraine has ordered full mobilisation to counter the military intervention.

Crimea is the main flashpoint, but there are also demonstrations in eastern Ukraine.

Russia reports ballistic missile test amid Crimea tension

The Russian military says it has test-fired an intercontinental ballistic missile, as tension continues over Ukraine's Crimea region.

A Topol RS-12M missile was launched from Russia's Kapustin Yar test range near the Caspian Sea to the Sary Shagan range in Kazakhstan, it said.

It comes after the US accused Russia of an "act of aggression" in Crimea.

The US said it was notified of the launch before it took place, as required by arms treaties.

Moscow is in de facto control of the Crimean peninsula after troops thought to be Russian or pro-Russian took control of strategic points in recent days.

US Secretary of State John Kerry, visiting the Ukrainian capital Kiev, praised the "restraint" of the new government there, which took power after the overthrow of Russian ally President Viktor Yanukovych last month.

Crimea vote 'will not be recognised'

Ukraine's interim prime minister has warned the Crimean parliament "no-one in the civilised world" will recognise its referendum on joining Russia.

Arseniy Yatsenyuk and others in the Kiev government have called the vote "unconstitutional" and "illegitimate".

But the referendum has the support of the Russian parliament.

The speaker of the upper house said if the Crimean people vote on 16 March to join Russia then they would "unquestionably back this choice".

The decision by Crimean MPs to seek to join the Russian Federation comes amid international tensions over the presence of pro-Russian troops in the southern Ukrainian peninsula.

Kiev says the referendum was carried out while Crimea was under military occupation

President Vladimir Putin and the leaders of Crimea have signed a bill to absorb the peninsula into Russia.

Mr Putin told parliament Crimea had "always been part of Russia" and he had corrected a "historical injustice".

Crimea was taken over by pro-Russian forces in late February after Ukraine's president was ousted, and declared independence from Ukraine on Monday.

Kiev said it would never accept the treaty and the US has called a G7-EU crisis meeting next week in The Hague.

US Vice-President Joe Biden, speaking in Poland, said Russia's involvement in Crimea was "a brazen military incursion" and its annexation of the territory was "nothing more than a land grab" by Moscow

Honestly, I think they should just slit the ukraine in half. Half goes to russia, half stays the ukraine because this shit is pointless especially since almost half the country is pro-russia. We shouldn't waste our time on these guys if they're just going to turn around later and do what we tried to prevent in the first place. And the whole "warning" shit is pointless as well since the Ukraine wouldn't even stand a chance against Russia.

>>37 It might sound ridiculous but the truth is when a country gets to big or strong for their own good, its not all about the two countries alone

In the first place, people are crossing the line of borderline protests to riots , if this continues its mainly up to the people not the gov when it comes to numbers that are gg against one another

Besides what country wishing for domination of another would like to kindly agree on taking over Half a country >_> thats my opinion of course
