The BBC's Catherine Byaruhanga: "Many citizens are quite happy the president is defending what they say are traditional African values"
Uganda's president has signed into law a bill toughening penalties for gay people and criminalising those who do not report them.

A government spokesman said President Yoweri Museveni wanted to assert Uganda's "independence in the face of Western pressure".

US President Barack Obama has cautioned the bill would be a backward step.

Mr Museveni had previously agreed to put the bill on hold pending US scientific advice.

Homosexual acts are already illegal in Uganda.

The Red Pepper tabloid is one of Uganda's biggest selling newspapers
A Ugandan tabloid has named the country's "200 top homosexuals", a day after President Yoweri Museveni signed into law a bill toughening penalties for gay people.

Red Pepper's list appeared under the headline: "Exposed", raising concerns of a witch-hunt against gay people.

Western governments have condemned Mr Museveni's decision to approve the bill.

Uganda is a deeply conservative society where most people oppose homosexuality.

Homosexual acts were already illegal in Uganda, but the new law bans the promotion of homosexuality and covers lesbians for the first time.

It's also because I'm pretty sure AIDS is worse in Africa.

So, since it pertains to this, do you guys think it's fair that the World Bank decided not to give them a loan for maternal health, newborn care and family planning due to their gay laws?

I don't.
Seems jewy to me.

>>4 What the fuck? This is a thing?

So now others can't make their own laws without consequences fron people outside their own states or countries.
Definitely wrong. Or jewy.

Aids runs rampid in male and female genders whether or not you gay or straight. Uganda is fucking retarded. the bill states that any person caught in homosexual acts are to be exicuted on sight. this is fucked up and that whole cuntry government teared down and rebult on a ground of understanding and peace and tolerance. Its time for a era of peace

>>4 If gay people are spreading AIDS, they're only spreading it amongst themselves, because they don't have sex with people who aren't gay. It's not only spread through sex, but that's the biggest contributor.

The U.N. withholding those services is a little iffy, to say the least. On the one hand, they are withholding services for heterosexuality, so it isn't totally unrelated. Uganda is committing what the U.N. considers a crime, as they are killing people who are gay. The U.N. has taken sides before (albeit grudgingly), so I guess this could be considered the same.

On the other hand, the strategy of trying to convince a country to change its thinking of gays by punishing them for their beliefs is pretty stupid. You can't force change like that, and changing the laws about gays won't change the mindset. If anything, this punishment will be blamed on the gays.

>>6 I don't think any state should have the right to come into a person's private home and pick what they can and cannot do.

That is that person's business, so I agree with you in the spirit of that idea.

>>7 I'm not denying that Uganda is fucking retarded. I'm just saying with the amount of aids in that place they should really do something about that, not saying killing gays is a good idea though.

Anyways, I think the U.N. shouldn't pick sides, but I think that they should do something about just outright killing homos in the street.
Punishing more people isn't going to fix the problem.
It's going to, like you said, make people hate the gays more.
It's keeping the fire going so dey can make da paypa.

Let me just say that this is dumb. Not because it's homophobia, but because it isn't going to solve the fucking problem.
While gay men (or anyone who practises anal sex) are more susceptible to STIs, removing them from the equation isn't going to stop the transmission of STIs. Heterosexuals will still get infected and still pass it on regardless, because all forms of sexual contact are able to transmit these infections. It's not some homo curse - everyone's susceptible.
So this is just a really pointless thing to do. They should be working to improve sex education and distributing condoms/vaccines before they start a witch hunt (which sounds kind of stupid considering it's Uganda).

The government should be able to do whatever they want their. The idea you're talking about, privacy, is very new.

It is their values. I don't exactly agree with them but at least they stick to their values unlike many other nations who now allow gay marriage

This is said there needs to be more countries that support this. But if its there way of life its would not be fair to go and change it.

Overall i guess I am apolitical regarding Uganda's laws, however execution as punishment is ridiculous
