It appears to have been taken during the burglary of a small chapel that was a place of special significance to the late Pope.

The church of San Pietro della Ienca lies in an isolated spot in the mountains of central Abruzzo region.

Over the weekend, thieves broke some protective iron bars and forced their way in through a window.
They left the collection box, but took a crucifix and the priceless relic, which contains a piece of gauze once soaked in the blood of the late Pope - one of only three such relics in the world.

My main interest is not "how much"
But how "DID" the thief do it.
Considering the security of the Vatican
The only probable thief, that can do it are the priest's itself.
I have read in this documentary that most of these items are very lock tight within a vault.

I like the way you think, Jeimu. But if the priest did steal it himself, what would be his reason and where would he hide it? If he did steal it I bet it will be easy for him to hide it since people will think 'oh no, the pope would never steal it'.

"small chapel"
"thieves broke some protective iron bars and forced their way in through a window."

What? Where did you get the idea that this relic was stolen from the Vatican? Did you even read the article? Maybe you were talking about something else I might have missed.

There's a theory about it being used as a sacrifice to Satan, as it was the start of the new Satanic calendar not too long ago.

Pope John Paul ll blood-soaked relic found in Italy

Italian police have recovered most of a piece of cloth stained with the blood of Pope John Paul ll after it was stolen from a church in Abruzzo.
The cloth - from a cassock John Paul was wearing in 1981 when a gunman tried to assassinate him - was taken in a burglary last weekend.

The cloth was found in separate pieces in a garage of one of the three men arrested in connection with the theft.

It has been put back together with only a few filaments of gold missing.

Police are still looking for the remaining fragments.

On Thursday officers had found the gold and glass case in which the relic was held but said the cloth was still missing.

Of course. I wouldn't be surprised if God, Lord Jesus, Lord Lucifer, and Satan all did battle here on Earth over one Pope's blood.
