The solar-powered rover, Yutu, or "Jade Rabbit", will dig and conduct geological surveys over the next three months.

I remember reading back in September that they were planning this. Cool.

It would be amazing if this could ignite a new space race. If China starts to look like it has a decent chance of getting to mars, or another major goal like getting close to successful asteroid mining you can bet that NASA's funding will skyrocket so they can get there first. Honestly, I could die happy if there was a successful race to Mars in my lifetime.

Finally. How many decades has it been sense we went and there now just getting a rover.

You know, ever since America landed a man on the moon we seem to think the space race has ended. There are still countries out there aiming for the moon, and even beyond! America seems to have lost it's ambition for space. That disappoints me, really. Perhaps if we wait long enough, some country will do something that will make the US want to get back in the game.

I don't think it's so much an "oh well, we don't care about space now" thing as much as it's an "oh shit, our economy needs some fixing big time" thing.

>>10 That probably would help the economy. There would be new jobs created due to a space race, I would think, since there aren't a lot of positions right now for the engineering/designing of spacecraft.

>>11 A space race to where? Also, the jobs would often be highly specialised and quite rare. NASA is doing the best they can with their budget, guys; it's not like America has just 'given up'.

>>11 It would be funded by the gov't, which is why, regardless of the jobs being made, a lot of money would be lost. Space programs require a huge budget to continue steadily. Also, it's very difficult to get an education in that field, as Solace mentioned. It's expensive and isn't a path many students follow on because of the difficulty.

>>12 >>13 That kind of education/employment is rare now, of course, but it would likely become more common if there was a greater demand. Like I said, there aren't a lot of positions now, because there isn't a great demand now, so there would likely be more if there needed to be.

I remind you, the only reason you have modern computers is because someone invented RADAR. I also don't think the applications for ion thrusters stops at spaceships. Most of the benefit we would get from a space race isn't from the planets, but from the race itself.

Every $1 investment in NASA statistically returns $8. That is not from the moon or Mars, but from technology being created for spaceships that has applications outside of spaceships. So, it isn't money being lost, it's money being invested. This could be a very big benefit.

>>14 There is and has been a big demand for it; the problem is that not a lot of people major in it.

Did some research: NASA's budget was only cut in 2011 when the shuttle program was shut down. They were actually given about seven years warning of it by Bush, who actually set that in place to occur after his presidency. The intention was supposedly something about inspiring them to save money for future projects instead of relying on gov't money. They still worked during that time. In fact, they spent that low-budget time researching a new project called Constellation to send a rocket out - meaning that they probably needed more employees to do the research and the manpower to work on new projects. Whether or not they took advantage of that, I'm not sure. Skip a few years. When Obama came along, he didn't actually shut down NASA - he just ordered them to cancel the Constellation program unless they used private companies' names/money to manage and fund the rockets. He actually gave them a greater budget for unrelated projects, although I don't believe it is as high as it was before 2011.

They've since started to work on multiple rockets and capsules, so NASA isn't truly shut down; it just doesn't have the same budget it had in, say, the 90's. The space craze is over. The technology is still being invented just as much even though this upcoming generation will probably yield less employees. I suppose we're just not chasing after planets anymore. Rather, the US is making and applying the technology that NASA discovers to purposes that are closer to home because it is far more profitable and advanced than sending out shuttles right now.
