Shutdown of the Government!?!?! (63)

1 Name: DarkPit : 2013-09-30 19:43 ID:ig8Z5b9m [Del]

so basically all im getting from this is that the republicans and Obama, Reid, and Polosski are in a debate over Obama care and the budget which would cause the government to shut down at midnight on the east coast if there is more that I failed to mention please let everyone know about what you know

I don't think it is as severe as you are imagining, it is not literally a shut down on the government, I think he was just saying that doing so would prob benefit us better than being taxed to death with Obama Care. Which frankly I completely agree. If anything it will just be a lack in government involvement, not total government shutdown, because things would go to hell quickly in that case

4 Name: Sejin !PKt//nzxc2 : 2013-09-30 20:29 ID:galrkOUK [Del]

>>3 It could be pretty serious. In the event of a shutdown, all non-essential government workers (I'm not sure which jobs are deemed non-essential; this would be useful to know) won't go in to work. They wouldn't be let in even if they were volunteering to do their work for free. There's a possibility that they won't be paid for the time they're being forced to miss. There's also a possibility that the military won't be paid either. I'm not sure if the mail (USPS) is deemed essential or not. Because the government is so prevalent in the U.S., a shutdown will affect pretty much everybody in some way.

The scary thing is, this is minor compared to what could happen if Congress can't agree on legislation regarding the debt ceiling and government borrowing, the deadline for which I believe will be in a couple months. The U.S. has already lost significant economic credibility as a result of our rating (I honestly don't remember the name of the rating) getting downgraded a year or two ago. If the U.S. defaults on its loans (which is a possible result if Congress fails to agree on the upcoming debt ceiling and government borrowing issues), there would be a significant negative economic impact on pretty much the whole world, much of which already has significant economic problems to deal with, as well as social and political unrest as a result of those problems.

Would my dad's VA stop being sent since he's getting it from the Government? He's a Vet and gets paid for what he did.

6 Name: Sejin !PKt//nzxc2 : 2013-10-01 13:45 ID:galrkOUK [Del]

>>5 If he's already in the program, I don't think it will affect him, although an article I read (which I'll provide a link to at the end of this post) said that various VA benefits will likely start to be hampered when the Department of Veterans Affairs (DVA) starts to run out of money in late October (apparently, the DVA gets at least some of their money well in advance).

>>3 Judging from an article I read (the same one I mentioned above), the immediate effect won't be very bad for most people, so you were right about it not being as severe as some of us were thinking it could be, which made me very glad. However, if the shutdown drags on over two or three weeks or longer, it could start to get worse.

Here's the article I read, which contains a long list of what will be affected as a result of the shutdown:

its basically the government being to stupid to realize there own mistakes and the fact that they have to stop everything and everyone makes it even worse this is how my friend put it (the government is having a tantrum and making everyone suffer because of it) the only thing there doing is basically taking everyones jobs away so that they can deal with a terrible bill that makes are country a welfare country

Let me help provide some perspective here. See, I didn't actually know anything about this up until I got a call on the first of October. I had worked for the ACoE over the summer and was still in the system to send notice about the happenings. The message essentially stated that since the government was shutting down everyone in their projects and the federal buildings were to arrive at work as usual to shut everything down between 0800 and 1200. My father works for the state, where we had a time-off for work on the budget as well a few years ago.

So, what happens when this "shutdown" starts? Well, the long and short of it is that it depends on the agency. As I said, I got the call from ACoE about everything shutting down, and yet they have to manage waterways and prevent catastrophic failure of areas. My father never actually stopped working either. For those that have non-crucial roles to play, their hours will either be severely cut or flat-out stopped until the budget is completed. For others, it means they won't get paid for the work they do until the budget is agreed on and their agency adjusts finances accordingly. If things get done quickly then things work out pretty well, but it's pretty common for aggressive arguments to go on for months at a time.

So, where am I going with all this? Quite honestly, I could care less about "big politics" and what the GOP and Obama want to fight over wasting the billions we don't have on, so much as what this sort of thing does to the people I know who are federally employed. While the bigboys point fingers at each other I know roughly a hundred people who are now barred from working or need to figure out how they're going to stretch their savings over the course of several months while working for nothing.

And why? Because some people are more willing to make the people who work for them live miserable lives because they want to pout and refuse to acknowledge their losses.

So, the government shut down, doesn't affect anyone, right? Right? Wrong. WIC, or Women, Infants, and Children, a government organization that feeds pregnant women and children up to the age of five, often the only source of food that these families have, won't be giving out food vouchers anymore. Yeah, it affects people.

gov shutdown, peh no theirs still gov to which im sure the FBI would enthusiasticly reinforce if you were to commit a crime warrenting their attention. anyway im curious as to if this will last until the debt ceiling. in that case im curious to see what would happen in the case of that too eventualy defaulting. all in all I would not call it fun, but things may get rather interesting. sigh, sadly its unlikely that anything will really come of all of this to be honest, how dull.

1. CAPS ARE OBNOXIOUS. STOP.
2. Triple-post. Neither 1 nor 2 will earn you any respect here.
3. "BTW IT ISN'T FISHING SEOSON RIGHT NOW ANYWAYS..." Don't make fun of other's spelling when you can't spell either. Also, why do you assume that seasons are the same for Alaska and wherever the hell you are? They have multiple fishing seasons in that region, and some of the concern is if this carries on long-term.
4. "FROM WHAT I HEARD, WE STILL GET PAID." Private sector moron. Read my previous post. When this initiated hundreds of thousands of FEDERAL employees were furloughed. Some have already returned, but there's still about half of them that won't until this issue is resolved.
5. "FROM WHAT I SEE AROUND ME, ALMOST NOTHING CHANGED FOR CITIZENS DAILY LIVES." When someone you don't know loses their job, what do YOU see? Usually nothing. Don't assume that just because you don't see changes that it isn't there. Those people have enough to worry about before going to alert uninformed shits about how their lives have been deferred by politics.
6. "THIS HAPPENED 17 YEARS AGO." Yes, and it lasted 21 days. It really isn't a big deal AS LONG AS IT RESOLVES QUICKLY. We're into week two, and every day it becomes more and more important that people reach some compromise and end this.
7. "BASICALLY A LOT OF NOISE THAT DOESNT DO MUCH." Didja know, that for all of America's massive debts, we don't miss payments due to other nations for their goods and services? Didja know, that if this doesn't end we WON'T be able to cover them all this year? Didja know, that defaulting these payments not only pisses these nations off, it makes them more likely to refuse to trade with us AND will inevitably lead some to raise their prices for us? Didja know, that if you spent ANY time actually reading about what's happening or, oh I don't know, READING THE OTHER POSTS HERE that you'd find a long list of potential and already existing complications due to the shutdown.

If you don't know what you're talking about: SHUT. UP.

I actually don't really blame America; any culture that inflates to this kind of size, influence and power is going to suffer major decay. Rome is a stellar example too, actually there are some great articles that point out the similarities between Rome just pre-collapse and the current state of American society. Not much can be done except hope for a spinball outcome that possibly benefits you or to abandon ship and move to somewhere like Sweden or Germany.

Not to mention the amount of looming disasters that people aren't even aware of (e.g. that volcano with the potential to erupt at any point and wipe out near half of the U.S straight up)
