"The I-5 Bridge has collapsed over the Skagit River in Washington, an hour and a half south of Vancouver, B.C. and an hour north of Seattle.
It’s unclear what led up to the bridge’s collapse Thursday evening but local news outlet Kiro 7 Seattle is reporting cars and people are currently in the water. Photos from the scene show the bridge’s frame sticking out from the water, and the roadway submerged.
Trooper Mark Francis with the Washington State Patrol confirmed around 7:30 p.m. that both the north and southbound lanes of the I-5 had collapsed into the Skagit River. The bridge is located between Burlington and Mount Vernon, about 100 kilometres north of Seattle.
With Sasquatch Music Festival happening this weekend at the Gorge Ampitheatre in Washington, there may be some Canadians travelling the I-5 this evening."
Right now, I'm really hoping the ASCE covers this and people get fired over what happened. I-5 is one of the US's most crucial transportation routes between Mexico and Canada (along with I-15, US Routes 95 and 93, and I-29). This should NOT be allowed to happen.
