(I'm very surprised no one's made a thread about this yet...)

" The victims were marching in what is known as a second line parade, which are common in New Orleans: A brass band plays while marching in the streets, while a “second line” of people follows the band, celebrating

Detectives were conducting interviews and retrieving surveillance video from around the scene. Landrieu urged anyone with information about the shooting to come forward.

He added: "These kinds of incidents will not go unanswered. Somebody knows something. The way to stop this violence is for you all to help."

Second lines have been targets for violence in New Orleans in recent years. In the past, shooters have targeted a specific person in the crowd, which authorities say may have been the case Sunday as well. But Landrieu dismissed the notion of outlawing the Louisiana tradition.

“It’s not the second line that did the shooting,” he said. “The cultural events are very important to us, it’s like calling for an end to Mardi Gras because someone takes an opportunity to shoot someone during one of our parades.”

Mary Beth Romig, a spokeswoman for the FBI in New Orleans, told The Associated Press that federal investigators have no indication that the shooting was an act of terrorism.
"It's strictly an act of street violence in New Orleans," she said.

So far, at least 19 have been reported injured.

>>7 I live about half an hour away from New Orleans, and I never hear about shootings there on the news, mostly from people I know there. Currently there is a mafia problem, yes, I said mafia. Don't pay off a loan? dead. Piss off a mob member? dead.

Just about everyday someone is shot in that city, and police have a hard time keeping up. There is also this "90 day" rule, If police can't prosecute you in 90 days, they drop the case. I love the city, but now I try to avoid it until I get my CCL. It's sad also that the only people who actually conceal carry are off duty officers because god forbid a civilian protect himself and those around him, you can be fined and jailed for sometimes for killing in self defense, or even worse, you show mercy and give him a survivable wound, then you get fined, jailed, then sued for damages and suffering by the criminal.

It just absolutely kills me, I love that city, I really do. The buildings, the old cafes, parades, street performers, all of it. But now it's just full of thugs with illegally acquired weapons, then people like me who jumps through all the government hoops get demonized as violent evil people.

i dont know about world wide but at least in the US violent crime/murder has actially gone down. the thing is just that the news makes a big deal out of alot of them, gives them a nice boost in ratings everythime some massacre/murder happens. so its more like such events are getting more press and people take more notice of events that have been happaning in one way or another for quite some time.

It really has been, but media controls news like we control diamonds on the market, we make it seem more valuable than it really is or depreciate it at our convenience. And honestly, I wouldn't really say firearm laws or lack there of have contributed.

>>15 Wouldn't surprise me if it was. There is stuff like this happening all the time. I personally haven't heard any further news about it, but it would make sense if it was gang related.
