150 animal-human hybrids growen in uk labs over the past 5 years (158)

1 Name: Anei : 2013-03-08 14:11 ID:UVa0l28F [Del]

Okay so scientists have created more than 150 human-animal hybrid embryos in British laboratories.

The hybrids have been produced secretively over the past three years by researchers looking into possible cures for a wide range of diseases.

The revelation comes just a day after a committee of scientists warned of a nightmare ‘Planet of the Apes’ scenario in which work on human-animal creations goes too far.

Last night a campaigner against the excesses of medical research said he was disgusted that scientists were ‘dabbling in the grotesque’.

Figures seen by the Daily Mail show that 155 ‘admixed’ embryos, containing both human and animal genetic material, have been created since the introduction of the 2008 Human Fertilisation Embryology Act.
This legalised the creation of a variety of hybrids, including an animal egg fertilised by a human sperm; ‘cybrids’, in which a human nucleus is implanted into an animal cell; and ‘chimeras’, in which human cells are mixed with animal embryos.

Does this mean we can grow wings and fly?

fullmetal alchemist. omg.

13 Name: Phantom : 2013-03-10 14:55 ID:hPKwK9rz [Del]

...You had to bring up full metal alchemist...didnt you? Not only did that give me ideas of flexibility but exactly WHAT could she do with her snakelike tongue...or a extendable jaw/stretchable throat? THe perverse possiblitys..oh geezus.

On a more serious note, Im thinking that if I went for any AVIAN qualitys,Id suggest a human/hummingbird hybrid. The result would scream FAIRY!

Smaller body, hyperactive(increased heartrate), and Occilating Wings(Wings that keep them in the air while not appearing to really move but simply have a blur around them)...considering they could fly up-down-left-right-forward-back without any assistance from the other limbs.

...Ok seriously, Hummingbird Hybrid = Fairy.

Horse Hybrid= OMG MUSCLES...the ultimate jock..including quote:hung like a horse. Only backdraw...very likely chance of being unable to reproduce...basically similar to a mule.

Catgirl....just,yes.Yes please. ANd oh dear sweet lord when you want kids.Be prepared to deal with the litter produced fanboys.YOu wanted sexually attractive catgirls, you got em, as well as the aggressive cat claw heats and ton of kids per pregnancy that comes with em.LOL (basically you would get savaged during their heat and you would have ALOT of mouths to feed later.)

Honestly people only think about image when it comes to hybrids normally but they forget alot of these backdraws that could come with it. Like i said, the only problem with the Hummingbird hybrid is you would have trouble getting him/her to stay still unless they constantly are hovering due to having to burn tons of energy to keep up with the rapid heartrate.

End Result:

Catgirl - Acceptable Mostly
SNakehybrid- Debatable (gotta recall reptile instincts)
Horsehybird- Highly debatable (Viable or sterile?)
Hummingbird Hybrid - Acceptable Mostly

Dog Hybrid - .......I will simply say...Have you SEEN Zack Fair in Final Fantasy VII:Crisis Core? the guy is human but seriously, they NAILED his nickname as The Puppy. My god at the numerous repetetive squats...How much energy did that guy have?!

I thought of the human-animal chimeras from FMA and now I feel sad. I can't imagine it being GOOD to create these... And they have to terminate them 14 days after creation, if you read to the end of the article. This is disgusting and belongs in fiction.

Fiction is for things not real. This is in-fact real, thus is more along the lines of "Non-Fiction" and thus is true, and is news worthy. IE, you're wrong.

This has been discussed about for years. Scientists have long since been working on this.

24 Name: nerdyanimegirl : 2013-03-14 00:00 ID:GaMXpHoa [Del]

that's so wrong and dumb. even if its true or not. I think people need to be reminded that there is an order to the world and things in the world. there is a reason why animals and humans don't cross in DNA and other ways is because the order doesn't naturally do that. it's more gross and weird then cool. also a little creepy I mean who wakes up and makes odd embryos for a living. plus its like creating a new species of mixed stuff. who knows if they will grow up and be able to live in this world without messing things up.

25 Name: Thiamor (on another computer) : 2013-03-14 04:28 ID:fW9UsEmT [Del]

These types of experiments will allow them to create new medicines and techniques to help cure otherwise incurable diseases and problems.

So whilst it may be unnatural, would you rather sit there and question nature and order while many people die, or move forward with Science in order to better suit the entire world?

>>18 >>20 I'm not saying this is fiction, I only thought of FMA. The termination after 14 days is correct, and I still consider this wrong. You know, this isn't exactly new to the world. Humans have long been interested in the way DNA works and obviously someone would, at some point of time, try to create some sort of hybrid/cybrid. However, due to the fact that crossing different species doesn't occurr naturally in the wild, the embryon would die shortly after. However, with the constant improvement in the way the system works, over a certain period of time, the 'password will be breached' and it would be possible to give humans animal characteristics. Look what they did to plants. Everyone knows about GMOs now. I expect that these experiments, if made truly public, would be given the same reaction as the GMOs when they first appeared.

Its a smart idea but there taking it in the wrong direction. useing animals is wrong use humans its smarter because the human gene in the shots they give the animals to grow the limbs ears and what not, is already in the humans, therefor its just a over exposure of the gene allowing it to regenerate on its own.

worse things have been done. I remember seeing an experiment where they would take out the brains of lab rats, drop it in a dish, and leave it in control of a small RC car, one of those shitty RC cars that only turn when going backwards. The mice would run into walls in a panic over their new body, then die of shock. The results would be recorded, and a new mouse would be used.
That study could be used for improving brain mapping, but was still quite messed up.
This study on the other hand is just growing mutants, and killing them before they develop. life forms already sometimes grow up with natural mutations, and otherwise it's just pre-planned abortion. It's not like they are continually raising and torturing the chimeras.

I too think, it is good thing to rise some chimeras, but maybe for more than 14 days. In that time, they are just a cluster of cells without any differentation yet done. Maybe they should implant them into womb of animals and see, what will happen. I know, this could sound cruel, but till this time, there is no other way how to rise embrio into fully grown exemplar. This way, we could see, how that body of chimeras trully looks like, and if they are able to survive outside world (like breathing, eating, moving, etc) we can test their intelligence. There´s absolutely nothing wrong with finding answers.
And if it comes to killing them after experiment is done, what about cows, chickens and other animals we eat every day? There´s nothing unnatural about that, so what about killing chimeras, that are not able to survive? It´s the same. Their death may help to save many human lives in future.

This could have some interesting complications. I am a spiritual person, I believe in god, but I respect all religions, and do not believe being LGBTS is a sin at all. These would be made by scientists, not nature. Yet at the same time I would consider them human and treat them as such. They would after all, be sentient life forms. In a way wouldn't using any preventive medication since it is not found in nature be considered a sin in the same way,if you want to over analyze things. Could it be that whatever created us, gave us the means to do such thing for a reason. I do think that this has the possibility to save lives by providing organs, yet do these human animal hybrids..would they even have the choice? Would they have the same rights as us. I think they should, for even if they are not made in the traditional sense, they are still humans, and we are responsible for them. Just as I feel about androids if they became artificially intelligent enough to have feelings and feel pain, I would say they should have rights, and deserve to be treated with the same respect of any sentient life form.

i am waiting for the planet of the apes scenario to happen

if this is really true, then im all for it, i mean it sounds pretty cool, i mean if it hurts the chimeras then i would feel really bad for them, and would want the scientist to do what they can to help them and if they can't, well stop their misery and end it. otherwise i would love to walk around and see a cat girl or monkey boy like goku walking around. they should mix wolf and human genes together and make a wolf girl/boy. srry i love wolves.

Im not sure how to react actually, I mean sure its a great improvement in science and general history, however what about the moral values? I mean think about the admixed embryo's, sure their animal, but their also part human as if they have a mind and and freewill just like any of us, would they WANT to be changed? To be born 'abnormal' without their consent, even though their barely eggs and not even infants its abit mean in my opinion to treat them lke animals just because they have that part within them. Their human (partly) also therefore are to be given the same rights as any other human. Im abit mixed on this.

Guys, people are thinking this way too far.

Most of the experiments are embryos with a whole lot of theory. It's like saying a storm is coming because you felt some light rain. It's not like there are secret labs out there hiding manbearpigs from the public's eye.

>>98 I understand your point but a little reflection on this. There are many who do not wish to be born in this world, not many wished they were. Also to add, a lot of people are born abnormal due to bad genetics and the parents either fucking around with the wrong stuff or simple it ran in their family from some old distant disease. Many are born abnormal, more then you think and still are. This is just a fact of life, but also you see as abnormal could be normal to them. Could be normal to me or someone else. That's more over a point of view. Naturally their will always be hate cause that's how people are. Why is that is another topic I could get into but is not needed right now. I can say if they aren't in pain or the scientists could learn to put an end to the pain that causes them, great. Hell if one day it gets to the point where they're like humans, talking and etc. I really could befriend one of them. I don't have a reason to hate them or see an end to their existence. I could actually see that if humans faded away, natural selection would have the next species on the world step up to the plate and at some point probably would develop intelligence. One also must remember that we were also made by something else, protozoa or bacteria. A distant relative of the ape that simply had to adapt to the environment around it to survive or simply made. Whether this stems into religious believes is non of my concern. Humans were made by one thing or another, but simply we were made by another thing. Doesn't mean we should call bacteria or the ape gods. Damn I'm ranting lol, sorry. My point simply is that just cause we made them doesn't mean we are gods nor it makes them abnormal. Yes I realize you never said anything about god or etc. That was directed towards those who read this. Stealing this from my friend but, "Just because you make something doesn't mean your the god of it. Cause eventually it will have free will of its own. (he made a skynet reference this part which a laughed at) It is in nature to have free will whether you make or if you are made. Cause last I checked, nothing in life or nature tells you to bow before the one who made you. It's really just another way of giving life to a baby. Eventually that baby will grow to have opinions and ideas of its own. Doesn't make the person who gave life to it god or an all powerful being, just a person letting life flow." I'm sure I'll get backlash from haters with this replay but mehhhhh. It's really important to be accepting and understanding. Damn.. I really veered from the "abnormal" topic to all of this lol. My bad for the rant but damn I just had a lot to say lol.

I kind of want to see how well the cybrids could handle human society. Assuming they were treated as humans with birth defects, they might be able to live ok, but I can't imagine them having long lifespans. As far as the Fullmetal Alchemist references go, in FMA, they also have moral issues with creating chimeras about half of the time.

That being said, if they can perfect this and learn how to administer it via gene therapy without large risk of side effects such as shortened lifespan, imagine the muscle gains, the ability to grow wings, and the other possibilities for quality of life.

That being said, The ethics surrounding this are a fine line. Are cybrids humans or animals? What about chimeras? The 14 day rule is a short term way to circumvent the issue in that they're just embryos, which don't count (Though some would argue otherwise).

Either way, it's a very interesting, very touchy topic that we may very well hear about again.

the thing though is an embryo is a fetus at 11 weeks at the 14th day it has a human-like shape already

tl;dr You'd have to mess with the human body pretty heavily for it to be capable of flight so don't expect it any time soon. (This probably has some inconsistencies but you get the idea)

Okay, I have a few big issues with this but I'm going to focus on one particular thing for now.
Humans cannot just have wings.
They can't.
Now, when I say this, I mean humans can't have wings just plopped there in between their shoulders and be ready to fly. Because wings aren't the only think that makes flight possible for birds - it's a combination of aerodynamic body shape and superior muscular and skeletal structure, among other things.
The thing about humans is literally just that we were made to walk. Our entire body is sculpted for that purpose.
Then, if you look at birds, you'll notice how they're shaped. In flight, their body is meant to emulate a torpedo that glides through the air, with the wings supporting it. The human body is stocky and muscular, but not aerodynamic.
To move their wings, birds need a large amount of strong muscles combined with a light body. A winged human would need to be ridiculously muscular - but if they were really muscular, they would be too heavy to lift off the ground! You would also need to either a. develop another set of pectoral muscles or b. amputate your arms and a section of your side.
Additionally, our LEGS. They're big and bulky and made for being on the ground pretty much all the time. Whereas bird's legs are (generally) thin and dainty, for perching on branches and walking short distances. So you would also decrease your leg mass.
You wouldn't even look like a human anymore, in short. They would have to mess with your physical form so much it wouldn't even be recognizable.

Otherwise, I think this is great. With this technology, we can help bring back endangered species by transplanting embyros more effectively (I know they've been doing this correctly, but with this it could be done on a larger scale). I just hope we actually use it for good reasons instead of stupid shit.
(Also yes, I've read Maximum Ride and it's a cool series but it's innacurate as fuck.)
/end rant
