DAYTONA BEACH, FLA

At least 28 people were injured — two critically — during the last lap of the NASCAR Nationwide Series race at Daytona International Speedway on Saturday, officials said, when a car slammed into the catch fence and came apart.

The incident was the result of a last-lap crash in the battle for the win. Kyle Larson’s car was launched into the fence as drivers crashed around him and Tony Stewart took the checkered flag. The suspension and tires from Larson’s car went into the fence, with one tire appearing to sail over it. The front end was sheared off of Larson’s car, but the driver climbed from it.

Daytona International Speedway President Joie Chitwood III confirmed that 14 people were transported off property and an additional 14 were treated in the at-track care center.

I didn't post all of it, so look on here.

I was watching live, of course.

My mom and I were both stunned. We could tell it was...bad. Really bad. When all the drivers got out of their cars fine but the commentators still kept an eerily solemn tone about them, there was no doubting that fans were hurt. I haven't recalled a NASCAR broadcast that ominous since Dale Sr's death in the 2001 Daytona 500.

I'm not a very religious person, but I'm obviously praying that those injured make it through with a speedy recovery.

Now on to my complaining: I've gone to numerous news articles about it looking for updates and almost all of them have comments primarily consisting of "LOL REDNECKS GETTING WHAT THEY DESERVE" or "I BET THE DUMB LIBS WILL TRY TO USE NASCAR CONTROL NOW. FUCK TYRANT OBAMA." or "insertstupidirrelevantshitaboutDanicapatrickhere" etc.

It makes me pissed to see so few other people legitimately express concern for people that were injured just attending an event that they loved. People are people. I've been annoyed at Nascar fans who are idiots before, and I've been annoyed at Nascar haters before, but not to the extent to which I lost faith in humanity due to both today.

Sadly, the risk of injury is always there in motorsports. Drivers and fans alike know that. This doesn't happen often, and cars have been sent into the fence before with no fan injuries. This is truly just a sad day, and it will surely put a damper on tomorrow's Daytona 500 festivities, but it's also worth bearing in mind that this could have been far worse than it was. The car itself didn't go into the stands, and that's the most important reason catchfences exist.

But yeah, sad shit.

I swear if one of you make a redneck joke, you're dead. There's a time and place for stupid comments. This isn't such a time.

HAHA, at Yatahaze, all deep and serious, then just "but yeah, sad shit."

But to the actual crash it sounds really bad, And I agree it is rare, I live in Australia so racing is a bit different here, but racing in general is dangerous, that just goes to show, if professionals can crash what makes stupid dooche bags on the street think they cant? with that aside

"but yeah, sad shit."
