Tightening Up On Security (9)

A disturbing public opinion has been made byRepresentativeLouie Gohmert of Texas, in regards to the tragic shooting at an elementary school in Connecticut that resulted in the deaths of 28 children. Gohmert wants teachers to not only participate in target practice but also to have the authorization to carry guns while they teach. According to the Huffington post Gohmert had this to say in response to the shooting “I wish to God she had had an m-4 in her office, locked up so when she heard gunfire, she pulls it out… and takes him out and takes his head off before he can kill those precious kids.” He argued to the public that killers often choose schools because they know people will be unarmed but showed no evidence to back that information up. I think he made that comment for the sake of getting back into legislation and for more gun laws to be passed. What’s worse is that some parents might have over reacted to the incident. Some parents are considering the usage of bullet proof vest for their small children. Parents have a right to be concerned for the safety of their children, but a bullet proof vest would be kind of over the top. Furthermore the very thought of children having to sit in a class with a teacher armed with a pistol is absurd. Children need to learn that violence is not the answer and that sitting down and talking to one another can resolve differences.

hm... torn on this. I agree with parents protecting their children and increased security/defense against tragedies like this in the classroom but I don't know if either measure (children with bulletproof vests or guns in the classroom) are the best way to go about it. is there an article you can link to?

This is just my opinion, but I really don't think that giving teachers guns would help at all. I mean, obviously it would stop, or at least deter, other people from going into a school and shooting it up, but what happens when a teacher decides to snap? Then he'd be able to lock himself into a classroom filled with children and blast away like there's no tomorrow before offing himself or something.
And then there'd also be delinquent students that can decide to break into a gun holder and kill a classroom with the gun that his school provided him.

And, let's say for the sake of argument, that a person does decide that even though the school has armed teachers he wants to go in and shoot it up anyway.
He goes in, starts shooting, kids start running around scared, and now there are a bunch of other emotional, scared, and angry people with guns shooting around. I imagine that would result in some collateral damage.

Personally, I think that more guns in schools is a completely asinine idea that will only result in more deaths, which is exactly what these people are trying to stop from happening.

Teachers, unlike many students normally have to go through a pretty extensive testing period of sorts, I think, (with background checks as well as psychiatric evaluations)before even being allowed to teach kids. If anything I really think they would do even more testing on a regular (scheduled) basis of all teachers to ensure none will eventually snap.

Oh the topic of bullet proof vests for children, I have this wonderful copy and paste I just stole off of my cousin's facebook. He's a marine. Please don't make me go find the rant on gun control.

"Okay... I read this earlier, and it got me thinking...

"WTF? Seriously?"

Allow me to explain. I understand given recent events the reasonable sense of taking precautions, providing a means of security and protection against a potential threat where previously (and currently) no real measure exists... but this is not it. This is not the solution.

http://gizmodo.com/5969499/would-you-send-your-child-to-school-with-body-armor

Why is this not the solution? Because I can hardly expect children to use shields to protect themselves, and in all likelihood, in the event of a shooting (particularly of children, in a scenario such as recently played out), it will be a frontal assault. I understand that children... hell, anybody without any means of protecting themselves in any other fashion, may be running away; however, I hardly believe they will have the forethought to grab that bullet-RESISTANT (not PROOF) backpack and strap it on, conscious to keep their back to the danger. Now, that's just speculation, of course, and I understand that. But the better reason it is not an adequate solution is that it is not economically feasible for EVERYONE to go out and purchase body armor for their child. A STILL better reason is that this is not a deterrent to a threat, neither does it combat a threat (because really, what you want to do is put a threat down as soon as it presents itself). Ask any serviceman if body armor (and we wear a lot more of it, heavier, and stronger, I'm sure) is bullet proof, and if he says yes, you should smack him for being an idiot.

What I WILL accept this as is a stop-gap, for those who can afford it, until proper policies are in place to establish SECURITY -- and not simple yet easily bypassed protective -- measures are available."

As much as it is true that violence is not an answer doesn't mean that it should never be considered. When someone points a gun to your head you will be glad you took the time to arm yourself and train yourself to protect yourself. Teachers having weapons might seam unnecessary but I don't see much a problem with it ether. The first part of protection is making a presence; and if these teachers make a presence of their weapons then a potential murderer will think twice before acting. I think they might want to have a certain group of teachers act as a response team when a situation goes down rather than have random teachers with weapons but I don't get paid enough money to make those decisions.
We will find a way to better secure our school by the participation of the people giving their inputs but the last thing I want to hear is "take away our guns" because there are fucking reasons why we have thought in the first place.

I can see why this thread has only 8 replies it's a sad subject. little kids being killed. why? why does it happen? back in the day people didn't try to hurt or kill people. teachers shouldn't have to carry guns. people shouldn't be shooting up places. this isn't the first time sometime something like this happened and sadly it may not stop. There has been talk about new gun laws. which is a good thing. but that's not the problem. it's about crazy people who do bad things. some tried to get help for their problems. but sometimes they deined that. and then go crazy.
