Citizens of 15 States file for seccession from the United States (38)

1 Name: Shade !8NBuQ4l6uQ : 2012-11-11 20:52 ID:2fVl2UIM [Del]

http://now.msn.com/15-states-start-petitons-to-leave-the-usa

Starting on November 7th after the election results came in, 15 citizens of 15 states filed to secede from the US. Those states include: New Jersey, Texas, Oregon, Kentucky, Florida, Georgia, North Dakota, North Carolina, Alabama, Louisiana, Colorado, Montana, Indiana, and Mississippi. Louisiana led the charge. One person even went so far as to file a petition for New York's seccession as well, despite not being from New York himself.

Honestly, this doesn't surprise me. Whether its Republicans throwing a fit after losing the election, or people who are actually concerned about the future. And before i'm called a Democrat, i'm not. I'm neither of the big two. I'm a Libertarian. And yes, i'm a legal resident of the US state of Pennsylvania. I'm neutral in this argument. I don't want to secede from the US(Being in Pennsylvania, that doesn't concern me right now until someone from our state decides to file a petition), but nor do I want to stay with a failing government. So i'm neutral here. I want to see some peoples opinions on this though. I'm curious.

And they're going to do... what? Throw a temper-tantrum and then split apart from their overall country into two smaller, less able-bodied countries because "oh we know how to do this better b-b-but... they won't let us!" ?

... Something gives me the feeling that the people filing for this are the overly patriotic redneck type that don't realize that succeeding from the rest of the states not only cuts their own political and international connections, but also just means that the debt gets split between both countries and now both of them have even less cumulative effort to work from.

I'd like to make a wall of text of being both incredulous and amused but...

I don't know, if they're the type who believe it's better to cut off their own nose in order to spite their face over what amounts of a childish temper tantrum - There's really not much to say.

It's at the top of the OP, and the article itself actually has another source as well.

Didn't we learn from the last time some states seceded from the United States? Civil War ring any bells?

8 Name: bread : 2012-11-12 02:32 ID:WL5foalr [Del]

I can't believe some idiot in North Dakota wrote a petition for NY to secede.

Not only is NY a mostly democratic state whose votes favored Obama during the election, but we're kinda in the middle of recovering from a hurricane lol. And FFS, the dude doesn't even live in NY so what right does he have to create a petition that speaks for the people there.

This better not affect my rep.

9 Name: Celestial Envoy : 2012-11-12 05:48 ID:AbdRJJAL [Del]

>>7 Yes the Civil War; people joining to form a confederacy to fight together for what they truly believe would lead their lives into a more prosperous one, nothing wrong with that. And the same goes for this situation; the worst that could happen is another civil war (unlikely) but for these citizens who believe that life without the government would be better for them they how can you not see and understand why they are doing this? It's better to die on your feet than live on your knees.

Yeah, if these states follow through they'll be guilty of seizing partial control of more than eight major commerce routes, five of which connect to Canada. That alone would lead to armed conflict.

12 Name: huffletuff : 2012-11-12 10:16 ID:QfPRKgn9 [Del]

There's no way any states are going to be succeeding anytime soon. They'd have to have a serious plan in order. The author of that article obviously wasn't taking things very seriously, so we don't know the details or anything.
I think these citizens may be a bit over dramatic. I do understand where they are coming from though. They just don't want to be caught up in our economy's decline. They're trying to save themselves. I hope they drag New York into it too, since that's where I live. If they had a legitimate plan for what to do after succession, that I don't think I'd be totally against the idea of succeeding, though there would be some complications of course.

I hate politics. People make things seem bigger than they actually are. I know that losing feels like crap. But I don't think that the democrats would be throwing tantrums. Neutrality is basically the only way to save yourself, but there will never be a way to be completely be safe from all this bull shit.

As a Georgian, I stand by my state even if I don't have a problem with the government. If they secede, I'll support it. If they don't oh well.

And It would be interesting to see the formation of a new nation in your own land.

15 Name: huffletuff : 2012-11-12 16:47 ID:QfPRKgn9 [Del]

>>13 You don't think democrats would be throwing tantrums? They were throwing tantrums during the election even though Romney wasn't even president. I know several people who swore they'd move to Canada or England if Romney won. Don't think Democrats are above everyone else. Everyone hates to lose.

Here in Texas their current petition stands at around 23,000 signatures. To put this in perspective that is:

-about .089% of the state population
-a number smaller than the largest 122 cities in the state
-...and more people voted third party in this election than wanted to secede here.

Now of course it's just been a day or two, but it looks like even in Redneck Central people aren't standing by this.

It just a bunch of racist assholes.

22 Name: Shade !8NBuQ4l6uQ : 2012-11-13 22:33 ID:2fVl2UIM [Del]

>>21 Wrong. They arn't racist. Well, alright, maybe a few, but the majority most likely isn't. This is why I hated the last two elections with a passion. Just because someone doesn't like Obama, or votes for the other guy(s), that doesn't mean they're racist. It means they made a decision, about who they'd vote for, and what their opinion of Obama was, but it had nothing to do with him being African American. Heck, he's only half African.

OT: On another note, the total number of states with seccession petitions is rising. Even my own state of Pennsylvania is now on the list. My position still stands though. I'm neutral and will follow wherever the course of history may take me. Normally, I don't follow, but i'll make an exception in this case because its too much of a hassle to side with one or the other.

23 Name: Yatahaze !E/8OvwUzpY : 2012-11-14 07:14 ID:ooER2eH+ [Del]

Kind of borrowing this from Haru, but I didn't spend the past 16 years of my life pledging "allegiance to the flag of the United States of America and to the Republic for which it stands, one nation, under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all" for nothing.

It was only a matter of time before this came up. And whether anything comes from it, all of you who are saying this is a temper tantrum don't have to worry about a thing. You'll be warm and safe in your own country with all your friends no matter what. If the states want to secede, let the petitions be passed around and signed by their citizens if they wish. What right do you have to tell someone what they can and can't say? By the way, I am about the sign the Texas petition to secede.

26 Name: Ei : 2012-11-14 10:04 ID:gJbFuSz/ [Del]

I have my own ideals and thoughts on the subject, but since my opinion doesn't really have any magnitude, I'm just gonna go along with whatever's interesting. If someone wants to secede, go for it. At least keep things from getting boring.

I'm from Alabama, by the way.

Just an update: All 50 states now have a petition. There are also counter-petitions. Truthfully, this is only the people. The State Government is not involved in any of these. In fact, Texas' Governor Rick Perry did not like the idea of seceding, despite agreeing with the people. Ron Paul voiced his approval, saying that it is every American's right.

28 Name: Phantom : 2012-11-17 16:34 ID:uW/pWobm [Del]

I should point out the rumors of Costa Rica possibly joining as a 51st state as well. But honestly this isnt the first time the states have threatened to secede.

What most people would worry about is the talk about going against the consitutions 'Right to Bare Arms". Apparently congress is also discussing a ban on home owned guns in the US.Personally I think its a retarded attempt that will likely start our next civil war.

On a sidenote, A common factor lies in history when observed. A Government is created, a Government prospers, and then a government becomes so self restrictive with its own rules that it collapses upon itself to make way for a new government. This has happened time and time again, and likely the USA is approaching this point in its own history eventually.

Id like to finish this reply with possibly the greatest line I was ever granted via an anime.

I dont know much 'bout US politics since im not from there but lol seems kinda bizarre to me, lost the election then secede, just plain childish (if the goverments of the states wanted to secede it would be interesting thou but there's no real reason to secede as far as i can think).

On the other hand costa rica joining as a state that would be real good since they aren't a state nor an independent country. The folks out there are from US but cant even vote their president.

Republicans fail to see why they lost though, they have to appeal to everyone not just themselves. they can't keep relying on the same people who dont want change its not going to get them anywhere. I mean im a liberal but im still amazed they havnt learned yet. Maybe we could start a third political party of Dollars

New Jersey's one of those states?! I haven't heard too much, except some kid in my Japanese class who just bulldozed any opinions anyone else might have. I really don't think states will actually seceded, it just sounds like a temper tantrum move.

34 Name: Shade !8NBuQ4l6uQ : 2012-11-18 00:58 ID:2oJODbtO [Del]

>>32 Hate to break it to you, but there's more than 2 parties. The third party is the Libertarian party, or which I am one. We're the neutral party. We take idea's from both the Democrats and Republicans and mix them, kick out all the stupid shit, and boom, you have a good government. Sadly, people only think there are two parties. So presidential candidates like Gary Johnson go barely noticed and barely get 1% of the votes.

35 Name: Misuto!M4ZBq07Cs. : 2012-11-18 05:02 ID:DMidMm4F [Del]

>>34 The problem with political parties, as with all labels, is that it creates the preconception that there is a single correct way to do things, and that other parties are inherently wrong about it. It also restricts you to doing just those things, lest you be mistaken for the other party. This isn't how the two major parties started out, of course, but so many things became associated with either one of them that every single view out there has been given a political siding for the convenience of those who would lazily judge a politician by their allegiance.

I mention this because I dislike the way you described what a libertarian is. You could just as easily describe another party from their point of view by replacing the words.

"Our party is the Democratic party. We take out the shit from the Republican party, and boom - good government."
"Our party is the Republican party. We take out the shit from the Democratic party, and boom - good government."
"Our party is the Libertarian party. We take out the shit from the other two parties and boom - good government."

But I guess having a stubborn mind helps in having a strong leadership, in politics. Which might be why there's so much bureaucracy and arguing, rather than compromise.

36 Name: Erika !IMCadVsMqg : 2012-11-18 16:10 ID:xqz6tr3o [Del]

Really, this whole bashing the other parties, bashing the other states, the fucking bashing on rednecks, it does no good.

Some say it's a tantrum. Maybe that's so for some people. But our country has been going in the wrong direction for a very long time. And we can elect as many new presidents as we want, things just keep getting worse. Not one president is truly doing us any good. It wouldn't have mattered who we voted for, you'd have people who are upset, and the U.S. would still keep going down hill until we all learn to be one.

I think the whole idea of have parties in the first place is stupid. It divides our country, causes fighting, and now even us Dollars are arguing over parties. We're suppose to be one and be there for each other. So don't be bashing the other parties. The idea of having a "Dollars" party isn't bad. But maybe have a nameless part. In this party you can have any idea at all, and even disagree with people in the own party, it'll be like we aren't even a party at all, just simple Americans that respect each other even if our ideas differ, just how we do in the Dollars.

I think..... for now.... the I.S. Should just kinda take a break. If that means States becoming independent for a time, so be it. But obviously, something isn't working. And we need to all just calm down, relax, and seriously think about in what direction our country is going, and if we're going to be ok with the end result.

37 Name: grimshrimp !!l/xZyEjg : 2012-11-21 07:32 ID:TIWHS9vt [Del]

So i see a lot of people saying they will stand by there country and slap down any groups rising against there country and the amendment. For those people i have to ask how they feel about a large majority of our governing authorities in office wanting to revoke our first amendment. The first is oh idk kinda a key fundamental to what makes this country what it is. i for one will fight to retain that right.

Change is inevitable - Meaning that the evolution of ideas in government anywhere changes with the times. Or how about this, as the younger generations come to power as their world changes around them and as they gain other experiences with new things through technology and new changing ideals that make old ideas turn to nonsense in the changing winds of time. Or even better you wouldn't drive you're old beat to shit 1992 Maxima with a failing engine and god knows what else - when you got a nice low mileage 2010 Kia sitting in your driveway.
