Someone care to explain to me the entirety of the "Electoral" bullshit?

If I am thinking correctly, it's just a group of CHOSEN people, sort of like congress in a sense (powerful groups), and their vote cost more than the normal person's vote.

If I am wrong, sorry, but I read that it's either they count for our vote, too, but if that's the case, just count ALL votes normally, and go from there. I don't see why they need another set of numbers to count. Votes should only equal to 1 vote per person, basically.

Obama also won the popular vote by about 3 million.

Obama - 59,623,643 - 50.3%
Romney -56,992,347 - 48.1%

There were adds up going "If Obama wins the Electoral, but loses the popular, should the electoral college be abolished as an undemocratic convention?"

.... No mention of if Vice-Versa happened. Hilariously, neither happened.

Haven't heard a word out of those people yet. I'm curious to see if they demand a recount - Maybe florida will be finished counting by then!

>>9 That's essentially what it is. The state, disregarding the laws they themselves have made, is allowed to allot the electoral votes however they so choose via select individuals. Under state legislation, however, these electoral votes must all go to whomever wins the popular vote for the state collectively.

It's one of those weird systems that could actually seriously change the way elections are carried out in certain states, but we've all resigned to use it in a single agreed-upon manner for quite some time now.

Either way, when the popular vote and the electoral vote side differently, it causes the losing group to add the tagline "we actually won" to all their complaining, so I'm glad both fell on the same side.

Now all this leaves...
Month of constant campaign bashing and other election nonsense -- OVER.
Month of people complaining about how the outcome will change everything (in either way) -- Just getting started.

>>9 So way back when when our founding fathers were creating our country they basically said "our people are stupid and we need to find a way to keep farmer Joe from down the lane from electing our President. This is important shit. Plus how the hell are we supposed to have everyone vote? How about we have them send representatives and then those guys can cast their votes for them." So they made the electoral college and each state got a certain number of votes. Now in every state (except Maine and Nebraska because they wanted to feel special and made their own system) the votes go to the guy who won the poplar vote in that state (except when weird people on the college decide to cast their votes in protest). Now there's no really much of a point because of technology allowing us to reach such a large number of people to count their votes and everyone being able to be informed (notice I didn't say everyone was informed).

Florida always seems to have trouble. Next time I'm challenging everyone to do research. Make sure you vote- not for the person with the best media coverage, but for the person that best represents what you think is best for the country.

You're the first person to say it thus far on this thread, so gonna put my thoughts out on the matter.

If you claim you want to move to another country over the results of an election, just do it. We need as few complainers as we can if we want any hope of compromise between parties in Washington. Election is done and over with. If you don't like it, shut up or gtfo. Had Romney won, I personally would've been disappointed and frustrated. Would I have whined day and night about it? No, because had he won, it means the American people, however slightly an edge it may have been, wanted him in office. Majority rules, that's the way this country has worked for quite some time now.

>>23
I think so.
The idea that it's possible for 1 vote to determine whether or not an entire state's electoral college votes go to 1 party (and let's face it, it will be either Republican or Democrat) is absolutely ridiculous. The fact that voters can so easily be reached through today's technology only makes it seem like it's even less necessarily than it already was.

Although a bigger issue would be the possibility of hedging (I believe it was called such, my memory's a bit foggy).

>>23 i think everyone here agrees with you. How is it that he has almost 100 more points(going off what I remember on the top of my head) in EC, but in popular votes he is only like.. 6 percent? Just doesnt make sense

27 Name: Crisis !JjfHYEcdHQ : 2012-11-08 01:34 ID:KLDJts77 [Del]

>>24>>25 For real. I mean it doesn't make any sense with today's technology.

Let's say state A has 400 people (with 4 EC votes), and B has 500 people with 5 EC votes).

100% of A, and 49% of B vote for John. 51% of B vote for Sarah. The majority wants John, but Sarah still wins because since she won her state, she got all 5 EC votes and John just got 4. Makes no sense.

28 Name: Crisis !JjfHYEcdHQ : 2012-11-08 03:23 ID:KLDJts77 [Del]

Not to mention, the electoral college doesn't actually have to vote for the candidate the majority voted for.

His Birth Certificate was edited, or something, or straight out wrong, because it says "African American" and back in those days, when he was born, and where, they used something "ELSE". I won't say what, because it's not really politically correct to say, nowadays, though.

In either case it's illegal to provide a fake one, obviously, and illegal to edit one.
