Mother Tries to Sue Monster Energy for Death of her Daughter (33)

1 Name: DevDev : 2012-10-23 15:18 ID:arGrw9RL [Del]

"Last week, Wendy Crossland, the mother of that teenager, filed a lawsuit against Monster Beverages, a publicly traded company in Corona, Calif., that used to be known as Hansen Natural. The lawsuit charges that Monster failed to warn about the risks of its energy drinks; a spokeswoman for the company said last week that its products were safe and not the cause of the teenager’s death.

That spokeswoman, Judy Lin Sfetcu, added that Monster was “unaware of any fatality anywhere that has been caused by its drinks.”

In an interview, an F.D.A. spokeswoman, Shelly Burgess, said the agency had received reports of five deaths possibly linked to the drink as well as another report of a heart attack. The reports cover a period of 2004 to June of this year.

The reports do not make clear whether the incidents involved other factors, like alcohol or drugs. However, the number of reports that the F.D.A. receives about any product it regulates usually understates by a large degree the actual number of problems."

So I'm pretty sure that many of you have heard of stories much like this with a parent suing an energy drink company for something happening to their son or daughter from their consumption of their product, but am I the only one who realises how stupid these people really are?

This isn't the only article I've seen of this subject or even particular subject, but in them there is always something that is the same: The cans and company clearly state that one under a certain age, or one drinking an energy drink for the first time, should not consume more than one can a day or even multiple days, yet in every story the child who is injured (or in this day killed) obviously goes against this recommendation and consumes multiple cans their very first time. These children are pure idiots and in my opinion deserve what happens to them!

I myself have been drinking said drinks for about 5 years now (being 16-years-old respectively), but was smart enough to know that I should just ask for sips of my brother's energy drinks when he was drinking them and not go for a full on can first off. From then, you have maybe half a can to a full one a weekend, then move up to the bigger sizes from their. It's this own girl's fault that she died because she was dumb enough to think she could handle two of the biggest Monster sizes out there one right after the other.

Energy drinks are much like alcohol, you pace yourself when you drink them so you don't wind up like this.

What are your guy's opinions on this, because I already (obviously) threw mine out there.

Dear god, why did you type out the whole thing with that color setting. Makes it near impossble to read via mobile.

>>3 Not the point here -_-

>>2 Personally, I think Energy Drink Companies should maybe try to take steps in protecting their customers a bit more, but that is no excuse for stupidity! Those parents are just using the their personal problems to get rich quick. Really, what kind of moron drinks two monsters, not to add the biggest there are, when it's their first time? I mean, how can us even stomach that? The first energy drink I had I could only drink 8oz of it before I started to feel a little sick. That girl probably had more issues then the public knows about to force herself to drink two of those.

Bloody hell I always drink that to wake me up in the mornings! I think I'll cut back a bit! Thanks for the health warning.

>>5 good idea! Lol. I mean really, those things are just as toxic as smoking or drinking.

Company's fault for making the drink. People's fault for buying it.

The way I see it go.

I don't like Monster in general because of all the popularity it receives, and is really bad for you in a way. Like, I saw some 8th graders the other day gulping down some Redbull like there was no tomorrow. I personally think Redbull and Monster should be restricted to people under the age of 20-21. I mean, how different is it from alcohol?

I saw this today. We all know these things are awful for your health. Consuming them with a heart condition is even worse. It's entirely the girls fault for consuming these. That's just natural selection in action.
However, if this picture is recent I'd say make the warning a bit more noticeable. That's about the only thing someone can get mad at them for. Even then, it's still clearly stated so they provided fair warning.

10 Name: DevDev : 2012-10-24 10:55 ID:arGrw9RL [Del]

>>9 Yeah, that's the correct warning for the normal cans. The one's this girl drank, though, were the "Monster BFC" cans, which are 32 oz each, and the label on them clearly states that no one of any age should consume more than 1 within 24 hours. She decided to drink two of them one right after the other.

She basically drank half a gallon of the stuff.

ITs the girl's fauly, not Monster's. I mean, this is a SPORTS DRINK THAT IS HIGH IN CAFFEINE! Personally, one can of that shit would drive me stark raving mad... damn you ADHD. *would have to take 30 milligrams of Adderal just to even self out.*

But anyway, this is something that is advised against. You shouldn't drink like hlaf a gallon of this stuff unles syou want to knock ourself out... or commit beveraged suicide due to underlying heart issues.

If I recall ALL Energy drinks have a label to the side that STATES not to drink so many cans in a specific period of time. Legally that is warning enough.

Isn't it kind of a given that an ENERGY DRINK is caffinated?

16 Name: Sid : 2012-10-25 18:06 ID:M7AcMN0J [Del]

I was probably close to dying, since I drank a spike, and I think 2 big rockstars in a one hour period. About 3 hours later my chest started hurting and I was getting nauseous. I just dreamt about my body being cut to shreds with scrap metal that night.

Even after seeing the warning I had someone 18 get that energy drink for me, since it was linked to teens having heart problems. Though I consumed more caffiene in one sitting than that before, so that is why I thought it would have been ok.

I just think her parents want something to vent their heartbreak towards, and they chose the energy drink company.

>>15 The tea + energy Monsters the company makes aren't carbonated, and Rockstar Energy makes many non-carbonated energy drinks.

2 things.

First: >>18 I don't see where you got carbonated out of >>15.

Second: It's not the companies fault. It's the girls fault for drinking it and the parents fault for letting her drink it.

20 Name: Kira : 2012-10-26 21:00 ID:QmKRNPHC [Del]

Strange. I thought it was common knowledge that energy drinks could do that to a person.

So, to sum it up.

PEOPLE WHO DON'T CONSUME THINGS IN MODERATION ARE MORONS AND DESERVE WHATEVER THE FUCK HAPPENS TO THEM.

>>19 Sorry hun, I was half asleep.

>>24 What are you talking about? The only thing that the mother is doing is trying to sue the company. She didn't do anything to her daughter, the daughter is the one that was stupid enough to drink so much of the stuff.

Number 1: I hate monster, four loco, red bull, any drink that's similar. so my opinion is that no one should be drinking it for health and personal reasons.

Number 2: If somebody does drink it way too much, it's a health hazard. I know some kids in my school that drink atleast 2 full cans everyday. Because our generation fails to see or care about health issues, they just go for whatever tastes good and end up hurting themselves in someway. And plus I heard that girl same girl in this news thread had a heart condition so she shouldn't have been drinking it inthe first place. the mother should've watched out for that.

27 Name: Thiamor !yZIDc0XLZY : 2012-11-06 16:28 ID:4weJwRnN [Del]

How does you hating any energy drink at all explains the current situation that Monster is not at fault? It actually plays it off like you're agreeing with the lawsuit, which no matter what would make you an idiot. But number 2 kind of plays in the other direction. You're basically circle talking.

I'd agree if it didn't WARN people on the cans. But anyone who agrees is just a moron.

28 Name: Daisuke : 2012-11-07 16:13 ID:OkG95anQ [Del]

Um I drink Monsters a lot, mostly once a few months if lucky, and it's fine. Too much at once is the problem just like any other thing. Heck even too much water at one time kills. Common sense and moderation people!

And to think i used to drink a LOT of Monster, until i realized it was killing my sleep cycle and ruining concentration...

First question: How do you /not/ hear about someone over drinking these things and dying from them?

Second Question: How did the daughter get her hands on these

Final Question: How many did she have and how quickly did she gulp them down?

1. I had never heard about it until I read this article.
2. You can walk into any convenience store and buy them.
3. "According to the suit, filed in California Superior Court in Riverside, Fournier died Dec. 23, 2011, from 'caffeine toxicity' after drinking two 24-ounce cans of Monster Energy on consecutive days."

32 Name: SlackMaster !IUZzEys2W6 : 2012-11-10 22:49 ID:11RWGZ5/ [Del]

I've read all of this, and I think it's a load of crap. I mean, come on. Like it was stated SOMEWHERE up there, there ARE warnings on the cans. Not to mention that doctors WILL tell you that with any heart condition, soda and energy drinks are a no go. Even without prior issues, consuming these drinks in high amounts is bad. There is no reason for the parents to sue over their kid's mistake, no matter how upset it may have made them or how much they lost. Suing is not going to get them their kid back.
