Most of us probably know what warp drive is in some shape or form. It has appeared in many science fiction settings. It turns out it may actually be possible. Scientists have refined an existing warp drive theory reducing power consumption massively. Think turning a space probe into pure energy instead of Jupiter. Don't get too excited. There are still quite a few technical hurdles in matter and energy, but it is in the realm of reality now.
HOUSTON — A warp drive to achieve faster-than-light travel — a concept popularized in television's Star Trek — may not be as unrealistic as once thought, scientists say.
Space.....the final frontier...these are the voyages of the starship Enterprise...it's mission...to explore strange new worlds....to seek out new life, and new civilization.....to boldly go where no man has gone before!
There are a few things that are in star trek, have more or less been realized, combadge > the ever getting smaller mobile phones, data pad > ipad or similar devices.
I does seem a lot of well thought out science fiction has some chance of becoming reality in the near or distant future.
Cellphones also have the same structure of the Tricorder. The tablet market fills the pad concept. PTT is a concept closer to a combadge. It's not quite the same, but it's getting there. The army has been attempting to construct a hypo-spray for some time. They're getting closer. Holographic technology exists. Some military tables are "holo tanks". These basically create a 3d image of their battle field. Ion engines exist. These were the concept behind Impulse engines. They aren't used because they don't generate a lot of in atmosphere thrust. In space they're wonderful. Simply, yeah, we're getting there. With time I bet a lot of technology that was science fiction will come into being.
Before people have been futile in turning anything into gold, and alchemy was for literature only... now it's respected, and thanks to the studies about the atomic structure... We did manage to do that... albeit the hard way, but it means there is still hope.
Like in Meet The Robinsons: "Keep moving forward."
Here is a filk-song that says everything I have to say. It is based on "the rainbow connection" of the Muppets.
Do you see all of those Stars in the heavens? Do you know they're all suns? Far away systems And shining blue planets Why should we know just one? Physics preclude it, they call it deluded But dreaming just happens, you see Someday we'll build it The FTL Engine The theories, techies, and me
How many SF books And how many filk songs Have said that it's grow or die? Life and necessity And hopes for the future Are luring us towards the sky Such inspiration must bring forth creation And who knows what futures we'll see? Someday we'll build it The FTL Engine The writers, the singers and me Oh, all of us under its spell Impossible never did stop us… Somewhere across that void Wonders are shining Wonders are calling my name Filkers and physicists Writers and builders Are driven by one and the same So many told it and preciously hold it It's something that we're supposed to be Someday we'll build it The FTL Engine The lovers, the dreamers and me
