"Well, here’s a story we’ve heard before in a flavor we haven’t. The Swedish Young Pirates association had a tent at a local municipal festival, and were handing out free waffles as an attraction. They were targeted with eviction from the festival, not because they weren’t allowed to make food or give things away (they were), but because the traditional festival waffle makers couldn’t get paid anymore."

Well I don't see this as anywhere near "not fair" because if they had people making Waffles there way before they came along, and it was their job, why should some group of people come along and screw up what was probably originally some type of tradition? That would be like them going into McDonald's, making their own burgers in their location, and giving it away.

But they don't own the place, so it's not their business what other people do or do not.
If they were allowed to do this, which the original post says they are, even if it is their business however, they can't really do anything about it, or at least shouldn't be able to.

The people who do own the areas/hosted the event can only hand out evictions, though, so whether or not they were allowed to is irrelevant if the people who hosted it decided they wanted them out.

>>4 Not entirely happy with it but I do have to agree with you there, if they are hosting it then yeah, it's still a bit unfortunate though, I mean disrupting free waffles? That's just cruel.

>>4 Those organizers are prejudice against free waffle vendors EVERYWHERE!

It is sort of a dick move to disrupt the sales of someone else like that, though. Even if it's free, it's still competition (rather one-sided, at that), and it's preventing someone else from making profit.

If you look at it from a perspective that isn't generically anti-capitalist, you're basically robbing the other waffle stand >:|

>>7 So... fuck freedom of speech if it encroaches on other's profits, got it.

And just how is giving out free waffles and disrupting others ability to make their income freedom of speech?
Please...enlighten me.

>>9 Simply put, read the whole article at the given link, it's pretty well written. The Young Pirates were merely using the free waffles as an attraction to get their message out... now, I wasn't there, so I can't say this for sure, but as far as free things go, I'm sure that they weren't nearly as good as the ones you'd pay for. The other vendors should have tried to consider lowering their prices, or bringing more to the table to get the people's money, you know, before calling the security to sort out their new found "competition".

>>10 >>8 It has absolutely nothing to do with freedom of speech.

I assume that those of you who are defending these people have never sold food at a festival before? Because I have, and I can tell you that they're assholes for doing this.

They should be grateful that they were even allowed to bring waffles when there were other venders selling them. Specific types of food are limited to a certain number of stands so that there's not too much competition and everyone makes some money. The fact that they went past that and started handing them out for free when those around them were selling them for profit is disgusting and, frankly, obnoxious. Even if there weren't as many waffle venders, they were still feeding the customers for free when they could have bought food elsewhere. For customers, it's great. For venders? It sucks hard.

And those who are running a festival have complete rights to remove any group or stand from it if they are doing something like this.

Haha, that's brilliant. It's like piracy but with waffles.

While I think this move hurts the pirate party it's great for making you think.
