This was in 2007 if anyone is curious.
Basically, a young couple was carjacked, raped, tortured, and brutally murdered. The suspect in OP were convicted and sentenced to life in prison. However, it turns out the judge was intoxicated at the time and they will be facing new trials.

The whole idea of a "Hate Crime" is that the crime is committed to the other person for no other reason other than the fact that the victim happens to be of a different ethnicity than the person committing the crime. if there is any other motive, it is not a hate crime. crime should not be considered one race on another violence, yet i feel as though the term "hate crime" can and probably should continue to exist, it's just that people seem to have forgotten the meaning of it.

and yet there was a story not to long ago about a black kid who was killed by a white man in Florida (may or may not have been a hate crime not completely sure), of course its all over the news and the president of the US even made a speech about the boy who was killed, but if he was killed by another black person it might not have even made the news. :/ also there's a bounty placed on the head of the person who did it (illegal) and there letting the bounty slide this is getting ridiculous.
