Yes. Today is March first, but beyond that. Some might say St. Davids Day. Others might be partying because it's beer day. And yes... It's Justin Beiber's birth day.
But more importantly than that. Today is Self Injury Awareness Day.
What is this you might ask? Not many may know, I didn't even know until this morning. But don't worry I'll tell you.
Self Injury Awareness Day, or SIAD, is a holiday that is devoted to breaking down stereotypes about those that injure them self. Pretty redundant, right? It may be, but it's still important.
On this day people wear orange awareness ribbons or wristbands to show their support, and spread awareness themselves. Some chose to start events to raise awareness. Some chose to be more open about their own self harm.
I had been cutting last night, and imagine the look on my face when I found out about SIAD this morning. It felt slightly like Déjà vu. Use this thread to talk about your own experiences with self harm, no matter if it's your own or someone close to you.
Spread awareness, this is important. Wear an orange ribbon if you can, and try to spread the word.
>>2 Not all people who inflict self-harm do it for the sake of causing themselves harm. Some just prefer to put themselves into risky situations. I expect to get hurt, yes, but I'm doing all I can to avoid it.
It's a day to bring awareness to those who do self-harm and to clear the ground of any mistaken rumors you may have heard. It's not a day where you bombard people and torment them by saying, "Oh, it's okay, shush shush little one." SIAD is a day where you realize that you're not going to say, "Hey emo kid, fuck you and your self-mutilating." It's kind of hard to explain, but the day is more about learning why people self-injure themselves.
It's supposed to be a day of sympathizing, but it's not like you HAVE to celebrate it. It's just to bring awareness to people who feel like they can't speak verbally.
