Is There Hope For North Korea? (13)

1 Name: MKOLLER !YYk5m0jo12 : 2012-02-29 11:39 ID:fW4dBbuX [Del]

So I was reading the BBC this morning as I generally do and came across these two snippets:

Life After Kim Jong-Il
North Korea Agrees to Nuclear Moratorium

To sum it up, when Kim Jong-Il died, he was succeeded by Kim Jong-un, who has suspended nuclear arms research to receive 240,000 tonnes of food for his country. The country has been suffering from famine for more than twenty years, and world governments are unsure what will happen.

It's possible that the North Koreans could rebel against their government at the risk of being mowed down. It's possible the people could try to flee to South Korea or even China. It's possible North Korea could go to war with South Korea. Or hell, North Korea could finally turn things around and make treaties with the UN and SEATO.

But nobody really knows what will happen. Still, I have to ask, what direction do you think North Korea will take? Will they put their people first with this new leader? Or will things continue to be corrupt or even escalate?

Well I think we have to give Korea some time before we make assumptions. With a new leader much may change. But I do hope they stay out of the UN; ever since we got mixed into them we had to deal with so much political bullshit. A country should be free to act without consulting with other before they start.

>>3 I agree with most of your opinions, but not really all of them. Yes, with a new leader for North Korea, things may change, and of course, it is too early for assumptions or judgement on how things may be.

However, things might be better if they stay with UN negotiations, rather than reach a hasty decision that may or may not lead to a war with another country. Negotiating with the UN won't necessarily limit a country's freedom to act on its own, but instead provide a voice for the country and its interests.

Hopefully the new leader will amend for what has happened in the past for the sake of not only his future as leader, but for the sake of his people's lives and the ease of mind for other countries. However, if such changes progress too quickly for people without much thought, it is expected that a more vocal internal opposition may occur, and that Kim Jong-un may try to suppress the people with heavy amounts of propaganda and censorship to maintain his power over North Korea. Let's just hope that last bit doesn't happen.

>>6 That sounds highly unethical and against UN policy. Source please?

>>5 The article does refer to the threat of an insurrection, and personally I fear that could occur only due to the twenty years of famine. The North Korean government needs to re-industrialize. They have no choice now; military needs will have to wait. If Kim Jong-un doesn't see that, it's his own funeral.

>>9 At the time, I had no idea about that topic, and later today I found out that this may or may not be true, since the site I got it from may not be truthful, but: http://latimesblogs.latimes.com/world_now/2012/01/kim-jong-il-death-new-north-korean-leader-kim-jong-un-crackdown-on-defectors.html

>>10 Ah. My mistake, then. Anyway, from what I can tell from the article, it is possible an insurrection will take place after all. The question now is "When?"

>>11 While it is possible, the way things are, it is highly unlikely that an insurrection will take place any time within the next few years. In order for that to happen, the opposition needs the support of the majority of people. Remember those videos of North Koreans crying over the death of Kim Jong-il? They're probably loyal to whatever his successor says.

The time for insurrection will most likely happen when Kim Jong-un's army will lose a lot of its faith in their leader, and therefore when cracks in his power over North Korea show.
