The Meteorological Agency says the offshore quake Sunday struck about 230 miles below the sea surface. The agency said there was no danger of a tsunami.
A magnitude 6.8 earthquake on the Richter scale, according to the latest update. Japan has hit at 2:27 local time on Sunday January 1. The epicenter has occurred 219 kilometers from the Izu islands. No tsunami warning has been issued. There was also no immediate reports of damage or injuries.
Northeastern Japan was devastated by an earthquake and tsunami on 11 March last year that left nearly 20,000 dead or missing. Japan, which lies along the so-called Ring of Fire in the Pacific, is one of the most seismically active countries in the world.
The earthquake wasn't nearly as bad as the last one. As far as reports on the matter goes, there was a tsunami warning, but no damage had been caused as a result of the actual quake.
It happened way offshore, so by the time it reached them it wasn't bad enough to cause any major damage, I'd imagine.
>>11 i didn't even hear that much when i first found out, i only heard there was an earthquake. my first thought when i heard about it was "man, these guys can NOT catch a break". as of now, I seem to be proven, for the most part, wrong.
