Immortal Jellyfish (45)

1 Name: Rokuro : 2011-11-23 16:10 ID:xWY7Icu2 [Del]

As crazy as it sounds, I discovered a few months ago that there is a jellyfish that is actually immortal.
Here's an article explaining what I'm talking about:
http://green.yahoo.com/blog/guest_bloggers/26/the-world-s-only-immortal-animal.html

2 Name: Makoto !wi40scaBUM : 2011-11-23 17:06 ID:wUTXOBH0 [Del]

So unfair.

3 Name: Amaterasu : 2011-11-23 18:01 ID:Yv49uymh [Del]

Ah! Soooo cool! ^w^

4 Name: Dima : 2011-11-23 19:53 ID:VvSBn2l+ [Del]

its not immortal if you can shoot it with a gun and kill it

jkjk, pretty cool though

5 Name: Unknown Apple : 2011-11-23 20:29 ID:ZjaBMf4H [Del]

Wow this is really cool.

6 Name: Bread!RTgBiSnMz2 : 2011-11-24 10:43 ID:Bo9oBaBy [Del]

REBIRTH!!%$&#
SCREW COCKROACHES, this jellyfish will live FOREVER!

It's a bit sad though, I can only imagine how scientists will torture these animals and use the technology for themselves, in attempt to 'cure diseases'. (`^`)

7 Name: Darasuum : 2011-11-24 13:15 ID:QKFdpzok [Del]

Same story with sea turtles

8 Name: Summer : 2011-11-25 14:32 ID:1g0C7ETX [Del]

immortal?!?! QUICK!!!! get scientists to stop researchin these creatures!!!

9 Name: Mordin : 2011-11-25 15:27 ID:9YYGD4cw [Del]

Theory: Global warming causes polar ice caps to melt. Results in massive global flooding around the end of the year 2012. Leaves 97% of Earth's surface below sea level. Immortal jellyfish thrive and evolve to become the Hanar, accomplish space travel, spread throughout the galaxy.

12 Name: Ranger : 2011-11-25 21:57 ID:s1E0vMu8 [Del]

THERE CAN BE ONLY ONE!

>>6 you can relax their regenerative ability seems to be reliant on their more complex life cycle. it isn't so much as they are adults turning into kids, they are more like butterflies are able to turn into caterpillars

13 Name: Futaba : 2011-11-26 10:08 ID:Uyeu2Ej5 [Del]

20 Name: Bread!RTgBiSnMz2 : 2011-11-27 11:21 ID:Bo9oBaBy [Del]

>>12

If so, then that's pretty awesome, but the thing here is that the jellyfish technically don't live forever, if I remember correctly, they reproduce something like a clone of themselves in a polyp form... so it's be like us giving birth to ourselves again.
That's pretty f*cking nasty, if you think about it /shot

24 Name: Ekisho Shiratori : 2011-11-27 15:39 ID:qpSMS7GH [Del]

WOAH! :O thats EPIC if scientists could like figure it out or somthing people might be able to be immortal!

25 Name: Janfel : 2011-11-27 16:08 ID:UNsA/5GU [Del]

I think the tittle is not the right one. 'The worlds only...' There might be more animals on Earth, just that we haven't found them. It is pretty cool, but there is already overpopulation and that makes things worse. If there was immortality, it would lead to a growth in population. If that happens, less natural resources, then it will lead to starvation. Then we're immortal, so that would mean an eternity of pure suffering. :P

26 Name: Tenshi_Sama : 2011-11-27 16:33 ID:USq0fd99 [Del]

thats In-Sa-Ne o.o ...just a few experiments from immortal humans ya know ~ .... oh and seeing the title i immediatly though " O__O AOBA !?!"

27 Name: Carly-chan : 2011-11-27 18:40 ID:o+c7KU5P [Del]

This could be a bad thing though, if they continue to breed they could mess up the entire ecosystem. If they use it to make humans immortal it'll be even worse. There's already too many of us in this world, imagine if we were immortal as well.

28 Name: Ridden : 2011-11-27 20:09 ID:xLFFOUWV [Del]

>>25 However, if we were immortal like the jellyfish and just change back to being children, we could also choose not to, right? so if we suffer we can stop the cycle :P

29 Name: Janfel : 2011-11-27 21:06 ID:UNsA/5GU [Del]

>>28 Good response, but seeing that it's 'immortal', the only way to die is to kill it right? Anyways I don't think that jellyfish chooses to be immortal, lets discuss this later on when there is more info. gathered about the JF... xD

my worst nightmare has finally come to pass!!

33 Name: Janfel : 2011-11-27 21:18 ID:UNsA/5GU [Del]

Oh and another thing. It says that "...can regenerate its entire body over and over again..." so pretty much it cannot die.

34 Name: Rokuro !aGh7wDGyVI : 2011-11-27 23:44 ID:9hRge7g6 [Del]

For all you guys who think that humans can use this, let me shed some light. This creature is a very simple organism, whereas human beings are complex. And anyway, if you read all of the article, it clearly says that the process it uses is the same one salamanders use to regenerate their tails.

35 Name: Kon : 2011-11-28 05:13 ID:DGx70gW6 [Del]

This thread reminds me of a newer Curiosty episode, entitled Can we live forever? (http://nerdreactor.com/2011/10/15/curiosity-can-you-live-forever-starring-adam-savage/) Starring Adam Savage from the Mythbusters. That was by far one of their best episodes of that series, entertaining and informative! Hope you guys will enjoy it

36 Name: NoiselessFavre : 2011-11-28 09:26 ID:L6bfCflI [Del]

so are these jellyfish eventually going to take over the world?

37 Name: Daili : 2011-11-28 22:11 ID:E+ZNLNG9 [Del]

41 Name: lunar wolf : 2011-11-29 07:30 ID:R/pYowX5 [Del]
