So yeah scientists have finally found a planet that is earth-like and that can sustain life.I think thats awesome and i just wanted to know what everyone else thinks
http://news.discovery.com/space/earth-like-planet-life.html

Interesting. :)

3 Name: xıɯəɹ : 2011-10-04 14:26 ID:2h2BysFH [Del]

About time. xD
I think it's exciting. Now all scientists need to figure out is how to travel 20 light years.

4 Name: Merr : 2011-10-04 14:35 ID:uAEFpSIS [Del]

i heard about this a while ago

5 Name: Radetz : 2011-10-04 15:27 ID:X/4jOpgf [Del]

AHHHH, I heard about this planet OMG o___o I hope everyone goes there and there's only like, 1 million people left one earth, I'll stay behind >.>

New Dollars mission : 1. Create a portal
2. Claim in the name of the Dollars!

7 Name: Feral : 2011-10-04 15:56 ID:pfoZsAnz [Del]

>>6 Count me in!

8 Name: Tai : 2011-10-04 17:15 ID:nN5i+VmV [Del]

*Starts Portal* I'm gonna claim it in the name of Tai... then I will change it to the Dollars... I have to have some fun on the planet don't I?... That would be cool to be able to go there though... If there is no life or if the life on the planet is kind!

9 Name: Lt. Dodger : 2011-10-04 17:37 ID:XBR72Fzy [Del]

Lol, just watch. If we find somewhat intelligent life in that planet, mankind will start/speed up a space arms race with each other and invade that planet.

10 Name: Misuto!M4ZBq07Cs. : 2011-10-04 19:03 ID:a/ZUumzN [Del]

It takes 20 years to get to that planet.

At light speed.

How would an arms race even work in that situation, building nukes for the dozens of generations spent in space, until finally reaching the destination?

11 Name: Hiro : 2011-10-04 19:15 ID:a0xXGoKW [Del]

If there is intelligent life, they would know not to let us primitive humans interfere in there world, After all we are still just at civilization 0. sadly :(

12 Name: Misuto!M4ZBq07Cs. : 2011-10-04 19:31 ID:a/ZUumzN [Del]

>>11 ...What?

13 Name: Fuzein : 2011-10-04 21:25 ID:eDTmWWMn [Del]

@ Wraive...Well there are people living there already...soo...claiming it as the dollars would probably fail. Just saying.

14 Name: Miyamato : 2011-10-05 06:22 ID:pAn+pRKJ [Del]

>>12 Hiro is talking about the stages of civilization. Long story short we are still extremely primitive to space faring civilizations.

15 Name: Anonymous : 2011-10-05 09:31 ID:sAUbkVky [Del]

Yeah this news about this planet is like a month or two old. Were where you? They called it the "Goldilocks" planet.

16 Name: Heartless : 2011-10-05 12:20 ID:emKFG+/H [Del]

i want to know if there is anything living on it

17 Name: Lt. Dodger : 2011-10-05 14:47 ID:I8YZPkVc [Del]

>>10 Technicalities aside, the idea's cool though, don't you think? I've seen a lot of aliens invading earth movies. I wanna see more humans invading other planets movies. :3

18 Name: Juumonji : 2011-10-05 18:27 ID:Yn78MxfV [Del]

>>17 Pffft. Sorry, but unless the aliens are completely defenceless, I really don't see humans taking them down, let alone invading. No offence, just my own opinion.

But yeah, the nuther planet thing? Pretty awesome!

19 Name: Misuto!M4ZBq07Cs. : 2011-10-05 22:13 ID:sL/YQQ7C [Del]

>>14 What is this scale based off of, exactly? Not like we have a reference point to compare to interplanetary civilizations.

20 Name: Pokjhdbnxw!amuOBZI1yA : 2011-10-05 22:55 ID:ZC8E7yDZ [Del]

I've always been fascinated with he thought of life beyond Earth and further.

And eventually as we use up all of Earth's recources, mankid will need to occupy another planet and use it for it's recources.

Of course this is just an ill concieved hypothesis of mine.

21 Name: Miku : 2011-10-07 06:02 ID:85MtMoTP [Del]

Hmm, this is the first time I've heard of such a thing...
That would be cool if there was a whole new world with all new species...something to explore in the future. :)

22 Name: Janfel : 2011-10-07 20:26 ID:5uZV9zVa [Del]

At least we have somewhere to go, this planet is at it's limit.

23 Name: Yukio : 2011-10-08 19:29 ID:HRgkul/q [Del]

It's nice and interesting, but, well...why are we always trying to find a way out?
>>22 Sure. that'll solve everything. Throw away the planet we were born on. Kill it. Move on. Screw pollution, overpopulation, etc. We have a new planet.
I dont wanna attack you personally, but I just like it when ppl say that. It's like you don't care anymore.

Also, >>1 this could be like that time they thought Venus could sustain life... There's not enough actual information until they can actually go there, and HUMANS can get there too. Chances are that, well, idk...ITS FAR?! We'd die before we reached the planet...Babies on Board?

24 Name: イジー愛は打た : 2011-10-09 11:57 ID:Hw23fpbZ [Del]

Woow D: And this isn't a hoax? Because wouldn't discussing it so openly on the internet with a link like that, wouldn't it cause a commotion? Just sayin xD but seriously, W.O.W. OH! Who has heard that there's a new STATE OF MATTER? Yeah, It's "Bose-Einsten", look it up fellow dollars :3

25 Name: Seraph : 2011-10-10 19:41 ID:QJwAq/Lz [Del]

A life sustaining planet? This is an intersting find, but I've read an article that stated that we humans wouldn't have to travel very far across the universe to find a planet we could colonize. In fact, we could live on Mars, but it would probably take about a hundred years to get enough oxygen into its atmosphere in which case we would still have to wear respirators to aid us in breathing. Well anyways, this is the most intersting news that I've heard in a while, seeing that there might be extraterrestrial life on this planet even if it is microscopic.

26 Name: tomthecrazzy : 2011-10-11 00:41 ID:uoQPbuYa [Del]

problem with this is that the light that you see thru a telescope takes a long time to get there so that planet could be dead by now

Very interesting. I'm curious to see what's on the planet. Maybe in my lifetime I will see the first earth like planet explored.

29 Name: Kon : 2011-10-18 02:41 ID:DGx70gW6 [Del]

>>26 heh, well, what could happen in 20 years? I mean, look at Earth! ... nvm, I get your point.
Awesome discovery! but I wonder why do we really even need to go on a whole new habitable planet? so we could then build cities and not see the sky due to the high rise buildings anyway?
I vote for a domed city on Mars... or the other closest solar system, in case our Sun gives way. Or just stay as a space fairing civilization.

wow thats pretty cool. i dont know why but i started thinking about wall-e, maybe something like that will actually happen in the future xD

Id joke an say "Lets call it planet 'Bob'"

However,I have a better idea,we need to develop 'Coordinators' like shown in Gundam Seed. They would help ALOT in advancing technology.

32 Name: 5 : 2011-10-19 09:09 ID:NY85vARc [Del]

Guys they don't look for habitable planets to give us another home, though it is always a possibility. And I'm not sure but they found one a few months back, not sure if this is the same.

33 Name: havoc* : 2011-10-20 21:46 ID:H5t7BRlb [Del]

I wonder what we're (or more so, our leaders) going to do? Hopefully we don't do the same mistake as we did in this planet.. right?

34 Name: Lt. Dodger : 2011-10-20 21:54 ID:5d4s/hWr [Del]

>>33 We will, lol. It's human nature to make mistakes and create conflict. Even if we follow peaceful space protocols, humanity will someday create some kind of conflict in space.

If we don't have Augmentations yet, I don't think we can go planet hunting.

Just saiyan.

A lot of the comments here don't make much sense and seem to be missing the point.

I love how when stuff like this comes up, people are always like "Ooh! A new, possibly life-sustaining planet!" like it's completely new. Just think about it for a minute. In the infinite vastness of the universe, of course there will be many, many planets like ours that can support life. We just can't see that far into space. The other thing that always amuses me is that I hardly ever see anyone posit the thought that all that our scientists are looking for are planets like ours that can support life as we know it. Life elsewhere doesn't necessarily need the same things we do. It could be composed of similar elements, very different elements, or something inbetween. It may drink mercury and eat lead-based food. Then again, our scientists could be looking so specifically simply because at least then they have some idea of what they're looking for.

Something else, which is more just an interesting notion to me than anything else, is that we often assume that life on other planets is so much more advanced than our own. It probably is. But I'm sure there is also life on other planets that we would consider primitive. With how big the universe is, there's huge potential for different possibilities and actualities.

>>38 totally agree with you!

41 Name: BarabiSama : 2011-10-23 13:04 ID:cMs9kbwC [Del]

>>38 >>40 I also agree. I think it only makes sense.

Humans are just one of the many species that don't know what's out there yet. We're shocked to find these things, and yet few people really understand how little we are compared to the universe. I wouldn't doubt that there was other life.

Plus, who are we to say what is life-sustaining? There could be creatures that are totally different to us, like you said. Some things are poisonous to us, but not poisonous to dogs; why can't it be the same with another distant race? :3

42 Name: Nezumi : 2011-10-25 08:54 ID:7bdD9hX3 [Del]

WOW TO THINK WERE ALREADY THIS FAR IN "OUR" EVOLUTION WE CAN DETECT OTHER PLANETS.. I waonder if their are creatures like humans on the planet?

"20 light years away!"

uh. wat.

44 Name: Phantom : 2011-10-27 19:30 ID:uW/pWobm [Del]

They shoulda said how long it would take to get their, not the distance.

45 Name: JakeW !7YpDmXZFeo : 2011-10-29 16:55 ID:0gZafanF [Del]

well....a light year is how far light travels in the coarse of a year...so if we got to travelling at the speed of light itd still take 20 years

46 Name: Ohasumi : 2011-10-31 00:04 ID:7MxB64xM [Del]

>>45 And even then, all we've ever achieved is traveling to the speed of sound.... xDD

Speed of sound: 340 meters per second
Speed of light: 300,000,000 meters per second

uhm.... yeah. Those figures are very discouraging.

47 Name: Kon : 2011-10-31 01:47 ID:DPdY8gys [Del]

We currently have airplanes that travel several times the speed of sound, but that's not the problem. The problem is that the faster you go, the more dense you become, so with normal propulsion we'll never get there. There are other methods tho
