Come On, Irene (37)

1 Name: Invader Kiwikami : 2011-08-26 14:17 ID:6wOsaPzv [Del]

I can't believe no one has started a thread about this yet... but anyways: are any other Dollars in the U.S. preparing for Hurricane Irene? I'm up in New York at the moment, on Long Island, and we are going to get hit head-on this weekend... who's in the path of the storm, and what are you doing to prepare?

2 Name: kenichi : 2011-08-26 17:47 ID:/dsE6Ruo [Del]

yeah, I'm up in NJ and really close to where it's gonna be hitting, friends and I are kind of freaked out :( power might be out for a week or so. IT's gonna be my first hurricane, any tips?

I do have a few tips, but most of them have to do with being on a boat in a hurricane... Well, here's some basic stuff that you probably know but it can't hurt to recap: stay someplace away from windows and doors - if you have a basement, go down there. Also try to keep away from the outside walls of the house, so if you have rooms that don't border the outside or, at the very least, don't have windows, try there. Take anything valuable or anything that can be water damaged with you. Charge every battery-powered electronic device you own and bring extra batteries. Check for trees and other sources of debris around the house - lots of damage can be caused by trees hitting roofs, or by windows blowing in and 100+ mph force winds whipping through the house. I don't know how bad it's supposed to be in New Jersey, but we're preparing to the max out here in Long Island, since the eye of the storm (figuratively, since Irene doesn't really have one yet) is passing just west of us. It will not be fun. Another important tip: during the storm itself, if you DO here something breaking or banging around or whatnot, don't go look for it. If you hear a loud noise over the wind, don't go see what it was. You'll have time for that later. I know this is like common sense stuff that every hurricane advisory thing will tell you, but really, that's all you can do. Bring a few card games, books, etc., and never underestimate the power of flashlights and oil lamps. Good luck and don't panic!

I went through Hurricane Ike in Houston, TX, and it was as huge as Irene and a category 2 as well. If you are about an hour inland from the beach you'll be fine to ride it out, but if you are living close to the beach and planning to ride it out don't. I repeat do not ride out the storm if you are on the beach. I've seen what Ike did to Galveston, and in Houston. If it weakens a good amount before hitting you then you should be fine on the beach. But I do not recommend riding out a category 2 storm ever on the beach.

Right now I'm still in central Jersey and the storm is officially here!!! It's actually quite exciting (except now I won't get any slee). But our sun-pump in the basement broke (it did the same thing before my sister and I were born during Hurricane Floyd) so the basement started flooking :O we had to clean tons of things and mop the floor at least a thousand times before the fire department came and let us use their sunpump and hose to clean it up!!! it's still pretty wet down there xD at least the power's still on :)

This entire hurricane freak out was hilarious. Well, hilarious and fucking stupid. Irene was barely classified as a hurricane and served more as a glorified rain bucket or tropical storm.

People just freak the fuck out because "oh no, hurricane! Those are bad right?", but in reality it was never any threat.

I live in upstate NY, but one of my Freinds Lives right Next to the Mohawk River, so we had him stay at our house for 3 days until the flooding receded.

35 Name: Dread : 2011-09-08 21:38 ID:ZtY2c+xu [Del]

I was right in the path of it when it hit but I don't live too close to the water, so we didn't have too much other than some power outage time. It was pretty startling to see all the downed trees, though.

36 Name: EightBitz : 2011-09-08 23:07 ID:Fu/Nr8fn [Del]

Ha its nice to see I'm not the only one on Long Island. I hung out around the beach during it, pretty insane stuff. There's another one that might hit us and the city again.

Praying for all of you!
Although, if a dolphin hits your door. DO NOT see if the dolphin's okay. That's how the hurricane tricks you into going outside.
