Article: http://latimesblogs.latimes.com/washington/2011/07/51st-state-south-california-unanimously-approved-for-more-meetings.html

Basically, 13 counties unanimously agreed to succeed from the state of California. Coincidentally, they are all Republican counties.

My Opinion a.k.a Why This is a Stupid Idea:
1) California is the 8th largest economy in the world, competing with countries such as China and Japan. Splitting into a north and south would skew the economy.

2) Los Angeles, which although is far south in California, was pupt into the "northern side" simply because LA tends to be a more liberal county. It makes no sense that Fresno is in SoCal and LA is in NorthCal.

3) Southern counties do not have any water resources of their own. With the exception of LA, which will be happily prancing around in the water, southern counties will either have to look elsewhere for water or be charged a high premium from the north.

4) State laws vary. Although the north will probably keep the same laws, SoCal will have to rewrite their state laws, taking up unnecessary tax dollars and time.

5) All the counties set aside for "North California" have a higher average income than those in the South. This also has to do with putting the LA County in the north.

6) The UC and Cal State school systems will have to be revamped, costing incoming students even more money, as well as tax dollars. Tuition is already too high.

7) UCLA and UC Berkeley are the 2 best public universities in the world, according to US Newsweekly, TIME, and trusty ol' Wikipedia. Californians from both north and south love boasting this statistic. Well guess what? UCLA and UCB are now NorthCal schools.

In conclusion, DUMB IDEA. If you want to live in a Republican state so badly, move to Kentucky.

Didn't Texas try to form its own independent state?

Found another article on it. [link]
It looks like the northern Democratic/Liberal counties aren't doing so well financially, so the southern Republican/Conservative counties are saying "let's jump this ship before it sinks."
