TL;DR - Download the Folding@home program and it will run simulations using your computer that could help develop treatments for COVID-19

How Folding@home is fighting coronavirus: https://foldingathome.org/2020/03/15/coronavirus-what-were-doing-and-how-you-can-help-in-simple-terms/

Download the software: https://foldingathome.org/start-folding/

Folding@home is a distributed computing project for simulating protein dynamics, including the process of protein folding and the movements of proteins implicated in a variety of diseases. It brings together citizen scientists who volunteer to run simulations of protein dynamics on their personal computers. Insights from this data are helping scientists to better understand biology, and providing new opportunities for developing therapeutics.

Their current project is targeting COVID-19, meaning results from this project could help develop treatments for COVID-19. So, what are you waiting for? Get folding!

To add you don't even need a powerful computer. Any processor, any graphics card will do.

Don't worry if the client does not work straight away. The team's actually short on work units, so as a result you may not see the program working straight away. Just let your system sit idle and let it run by itself.

Do not set the program to "High" Unless you have an ample cooling system (We're talking a desktop with a decent AIO or custom loop here), Laptops should sit on "Medium" at the most to protect your machine from potential heat-induced board flex. "High" will push your system a lot harder than most games will do.

NVidia cards will perform slightly better than AMD/ATi Cards, but that should not stop you AMD users from getting on to this either.

Good luck, Dollars!

>>2 Oh, I didn't realize about the folding power. That makes sense, my laptop is running at 95 degrees. I will change it to medium!

Wow! That's toasty! Yes, best set it to medium to save your temperatures.

For reference, on High, My i7 3770 is sitting at a cosy 60deg on a 360mm AIO, and my 1080ti sits at about 65-75 on its stock air cooler, but it hits the power draw limit at points.

I couldn't believe how fast this got buried off.

Hi guys. I saw this thread got buried with no reason and perhaps I could bump it to bring it back to life.

Anyways, I think someone else made a different thread about this very same topic on the Missions board.

If anyone's curious, the Dollars' team number is 266410. We've folded 5 work units as of today.

I'm actually considers participating here as well, but WCG alone had made my smol PC goes rawr all day and night.

Are they the same?

>>8 I prefer wcg because F@H doesn't let you run a specific project. If you're only interested in contributing to the covid 19 cause, wcg is more direct. If your PC is running hot, I recommend dialing back the percent of CPUs available, most modern PCs support at least four threads. You can message me in the discord server if you have more trouble.

>>8 Also, if the constant computational strain is making your computer run hot, F@H allows you to temporarily pause the number-crunching in order to let your computer rest.

I also had a problem with my computer getting scorched because of the constant amount of work I had it do. I simply solved it by pausing the whole thing for a while.

The dollars team number is 266410

>>11 Yes,it is! I joined as soon as I could (that is, as soon as I set the whole thing up)

Thanks for creating the team! I remember you put some effort into promoting F@H in a separate thread, but apparently it got permasaged, if I'm not mistaken.

Either way,I commend your efforts!

Yeah, got shot down because I was the second post. Oh well. Glad to see the number keeps growing even on the days I don't fold.
Y'all should also check out the Dollars Pockets mission.

[As of posting this reply it is number two on missions sub].

I usually only fold on cooler days with my windows open, but switching to medium on a 3 processor set-up allows all to work as reduced speed.
As for selecting COVID-19 specifically, there is not a specific selection, although the "high priority" is sill the most helpful.
It mostly dose COVID-19 projects, but also contributes to very short diagnostic tests that improve the platform and the occasional cardiovascular and pulmonary(respiratory)project to aid the more "at risk" individuals.

It doesn't need to be SARS CoV-2, just fold!

Cold weather is coming. Time to do some good while heating my home office. I'm focusing on Alzheimer's this year. I recently lost a bunch of friends, family and acquaintances to it.
