I know you probably already know how to help someone with a panic attack, but for those of you who don't, I would like to bring it to your attention. I have a friend who has panic attacks fairly often so I've learned a few tips and tricks for calming her.
Ways to calm someone with a panic attack:
Start by telling them that they don't have to stay in the room that they are in. They can go somewhere else like a hallway or foyer.
Once they have made their decision on to either stay or leave, go with them. Then remind them that there is nothing to be afraid of and that its only temporary.
Try to have an engaging conversation with them, while reminding them to breathe.
If that doesn't work, have them find 5 things in the room they can see, 4 things in the room they can touch, 3 things they can hear, 2 things they can taste, and 1 thing they can smell. While they are doing this, go get them a drink of water.(only leave to get water if they are seeming to calm down with that exercise)
What not to do:
Don't leave them if they tell you to, its most likely the anxiety talking and you need to stay with them until you think they are calmed down.
Don't tell them to calm down or relax
Don't ask why they are panicking, they most likely won't know.
Even if it's their 12th one this month, don't brush it off, they need just as much help as the first time.
Whatever you do don't seem judgmental or irritated, no matter how annoyed you actually are, maintain composure until you are away from them.
All of this works with my friend and several others I've had to calm. Sorry for the long post. I hope you can help someone with this information.
