New Year, New Us.

Some of you may remember the Missions Board Nuke of 2015, where more than half the threads were eradicated due to being duplicates, poorly made, off-topic, etc. around this time last year. It was the first of its kind in the history of the BBS.

Well, we've let it happen again. The board is a wreck. While I'm begging to the mods to go through the archives, what do you guys want to see stay? What do you want to see go? Are there threads on the borderline that you want to make a case for?

What would you like to see for the future of the Missions board? Is there something we can do socially to avoid this happening *again* other than policing the board daily? Are you for or against another sweep? Etc. Use this thread to discuss, if so desired.

I'm for another sweep, and it's my hope that my newly created board index and harsh policing will help.

Is there any way to make users read a particular thread before they can access the new thread option? That be a little tricky, but I feel like that can be done if Rektair has the time. Like, new users have to access Tanaka's board index before they can create a new thread.

Let's face it, it doesn't really document all the missions, it's quite aggressive and has way too much swearing.

We want to welcome newcomers and they don't want to see curse-filled posts that make it seem as though our limit is 13 missions.
It isn't all that helpful to someone who's here for the first time, they just see you ranting, stop reading and definitely wont see the entire thread (which contains the only things even remotely important...).

I think that a new, slightly more helpful thread should be made.

I kind of think the index thread idea is really silly. If it were less vague and had a specific goal, like only archiving advanced/difficult missions, I could get it. But just listing all the threads you like in a thread doesn't really make much sense to me o:

And if the index just has the title and link, that's about as efficient for checking duplicates as looking at the archive. It's not like you're including additional keywords people could check for that weren't included in the title or any real description of what the missions are.

What if we had a thread for general "don't make threads on these topics" with all the really popular duplicates listed? Like "pick up trash/don't litter", "clean up graffiti", "let's do something REAL", "post smilie faces", etc.

We're pretty much confirmed now. Just not sure exactly when the sweep will be.

Can confirm, the sweep will be starting January 26th and should be done by the 28th. If you feel a thread is saged, closed, or deleted inappropriately, you can link it here for discussion / explanation, but I can't promise that it will be re-opened.

Try not to panic anyway: some "okay" threads may also be closed with the intention of being remade / combined with similar threads to organize things like last time.

Otherwise, if I see something saged that seems like it could be remade with obvious improvements, I'll mention it here in the thread. Feel free to do the same. Here's to a cleaner Missions board //glassclink.

Why are some threads closed and others permasaged?
"A permasaged thread is marked to be deleted in the following week. This usually means it's a duplicate, poorly made, or expected to be remade. In comparison, a closed thread stays in the archives forever.

"If a thread is closed before it reaches 1337 posts and *is NOT* permasaged, this usually implies the content of the thread is concluded. In Missions, this may have been a time-limited event like a poll or holiday Mission, or a discussion that's no longer relevant.

"If a thread is both permasaged and closed, this usually implies that the current discussion in the thread is considered spammy or toxic to the community."

Regarding the "Targeting New Members" thread, it's not really safe to be posting your friend's emails on an anonymous site. There are all sorts of bots that creep around sites to grab emails for mailing lists, and it's affecting the level of your anonymity as well, etc.

But what if we had an off-site service that handled it? I could set up a mailing list where you submit your friends' emails and they get an invite to the site to confirm. Emails would be wiped from the mailing list at the end of each week. Could that be reasonable?

Note to self: We need a better way to organize the Localized Group thread. Maybe a spreadsheet? Also, if anyone here is decent at botting, it'd be really helpful to have a BBS bot that enters the chats every few days just to keep them from getting shut down.

Note to self: we need an overarching mission for mass cards (holidays, get well, soldiers, etc). We've had a few successful missions with them, but they're usually too disorganized.

Anyway, new missions will be up tonight. I ended up just picking a temp logo myself since I didn't want to make a bunch of options right away, but I'll still do an additional vote later.

Hey, have any of you guys used the Discord chat? I'm thinking of making that the recommended chat service instead of Chatzy for the Localized Groups remake since I heard it allows more users, but I don't have a lot of experience with it personally.

New missions progress:

Put the site together for dollar-to-dollar art commissions for users in need w/ portfolio hosting, including visual/performance/technical art, so there's a place for whatever y'all do. Basic tl;dr is you'll send x>10 portfolio samples with an explanation of your prices, experience, payment methods, etc. and as long as the files aren't totally fukd or you're obviously being a scammy scumbag, it'll be added to the site for outsiders to explore. Will be public + thread will be made when errything else is together.

Next up is an organized forum outlet for the study groups mission, since they've been kind of stuck in a private email group limbo that's not helping anything in the long run.

Upcoming are
+ charity funding POD stores you can submit your art to
+ chickensoup style totally-not-a-blog page to give the incessant inspirational message missions some kind of public outlet
+ email autoresponder w/recaptcha to invite your friends anonymously
+ general overarching thread for discussing all the external shit being made

Also still need to remake the localized groups thread with a spreadsheet and maybe discord ++ figure out how we can organize the mass cards missions in a way that's not fucking dumb.

Update: study group forums have been made. I may look into some additional features later on, though, and it does need a custom logo to fit the theme.

Basic tl;dr is tutors/students intro w/ what they can offer / what they need and then connect over the forum. Share tutorials, ask questions + discuss subjects in context-specific boards (math, science, art, etc), && optionally use a board specifically for handling small group / one-on-one tutoring situations (for those who want something more permanent than skype, etc).

It can support everything all proboards forums do (embedded videos + images, code boxes, pretty post layouts, etc) plus every feature additional plugins can add in the future. Specifically avoided having any kind of general chat-type board since the forums are an extension of the study group mission, not to replace parts of the bbs in any way.

Next up are the charity funding pod stores. We've discussed them in the past but never took the leap on them, buttfuckit. It'll take a lil while since I have to make some sample art for it tho.

UpdateA: internet went out for a second, but I put together the pod storefronts. This includes a general art-for-charity style one that encompasses zazzle, cafepress, and artscow (in that order) and a website hub that iframes those pages. There's also a dollars-pride-type one on just zazzle for stuff with customized site logo and catch phrases and things of that sort since the newbs are always whining in suggestions about wanting it. Will be making some example art pieces for them tomorrow 'cuz it's like 3AM here.

the tl;dr of this is that members submit art, I place it on merch there, it periodically sells something, and 80% of the profits go to charity. anyone w/ a design(s) get 1 vote, +1 vote for erry product sold w/ their designs that month. I won't vote, but the remaining 20% will be split between me (because managing the store is time+energy on my part) and buying adspace for the hub site, the ratio of ad:me depending on the month. Again, threads and full info on this stuff will be posted when everything related is done.

Once I do the chickensoup-thing I'll probably make another pod front to iframe into that site with just motivational typography-type items, but I'm not worrying about that right now.

Update: Still working on the chicken-soup-style-blog. Found a theme that functionally fits what we need and prettified it. Still not positive how we should break the posts down yet (inspirational vs motivational? quotes vs anecdotes? text vs images?), which will define how I set the pages up. Any input? Maybe some similar sites I can reference?

Ooooooh, I just realized you can have multiple channels in one Discord server. For the localized chat groups remake (to discuss offline missions with people in your area), instead of having a spreadsheet managing multiple chatrooms with possibly tyrannous admins, why don't we set it all up under one main Discord server with each region as its own channel? If a channel gets particularly popular, wants a more general chat area, or is experiencing a lot of lag, it can break off into its own server that we'll track in the thread.

Does that seem like a reasonable alternative?
If not, I'll set up the spreadsheet with Google Forms so it's all automated, because keeping track of all those links will be a nightmare.

Progress: I'll be posting some screenshots of the sites put together so far. The blogsite is pretty much done, just needs the starting posts, which will be made when I make the threads. This one will also have a custom domain for now since the service I used it on will let me use a cheap one for free. However, for the charity storefront and commissions site, y'all would have to chip in if you wanted fancy domain names (they're something like $40/yr to use on that service). But that can be discussed once the threads are up.

To sum it up, the current mission projects are:
+ "Colorless Commissions", a site where members in financial need can post their art portfolios & commission information
+ "Colorless Designs", a collection of charity funding print-on-demand stores where members can sell their art for a cause
+ "Colorless Inspiration", a public blog where members can post their motivational messages, personal experiences, etc.
+ "Colorless Study Club", a forum where members can connect to tutor/learn from other members about educational topics.
+ "Dollars Pride", a charity funding print-on-demand store where users can buy non-copyright-infringing meta merch.

As you can see, I'm mostly branding thing as "Colorless" instead of "Dollars" outside the website. This is to help reduce spam and avoid copyright issues.

These are all based on mission concepts that have been discussed on the website for many years but, due to their complexity, copyright issues, etc. have never gone beyond the concept phase. I've gotten tired of seeing the same threads discussing them over and over again, which is why I'm finally making them a thing, even though I know it's probably wasted effort on you soap scum.

I'm also remaking the Localized Groups thread using a few central Discord servers instead of Chatzy. Still haven't decided how to do the cards thing.
