Here's a quote from the about page
"World Community Grid enables anyone with a computer, smartphone or tablet to donate their unused computing power to advance cutting-edge scientific research on topics related to health, poverty and sustainability. Through the contributions of over 650,000 individuals and 460 organizations, World Community Grid has supported 25 research projects to date, including searches for more effective treatments for cancer, HIV/AIDS and neglected tropical diseases. Other projects are looking for low-cost water filtration systems and new materials for capturing solar energy efficiently."

I repaired a 10 year old desktop and have dedicated it to run tasks at full capacity. This is not recommended for small towers or laptops, but the build I'm using is clunky and runs very cool. Since then I have uninstalled the program from a few devices and still get a ton of tasks returned.

06 Oct 2015 – Finding new avenues to attack Ebola
Efforts to simulate matches between candidate compounds and one key Ebola virus protein are largely complete. Simulations of matches against another, newly discovered target protein are beginning now. Even as simulation work continues, the team is beginning to analyze these results and home in on compounds that could form the basis for effective new drugs against Ebola and other related diseases. Thanks to your help, and a new grant, the work is proceeding well.

These compounds were screened by volunteers on World Community Grid and this initiative is believed to be the most extensive investigation of quantum chemicals ever performed.

FightAIDS@Home - Phase 2
Even with the advances in treating people infected with HIV, there are still about two million new infections and one million HIV-related deaths each year. HIV continues to be a challenge because it quickly mutates in ways that make existing drug treatments ineffective. FightAIDS@Home joined World Community Grid 10 years ago with the simple - but challenging - goal of finding new treatments for HIV. Since then, the project has made some incredible advances in understanding the virus, developing better drug search tools, and identifying chemical compounds that might be able to bind to the virus and disrupt its lifecycle.

When you volunteer your PC or laptop’s unused time to World Community Grid (WCG), created by IBM. Grid computing joins together thousands of individual computers, establishing a large system with massive computational power equal to a supercomputer. Because the work is split into countless tiny pieces and done simultaneously, research time shrinks from decades to months.

In this extensive update, the FightAIDS@Home team leader, Prof. Art Olson, recaps nearly a decade of progress in the fight against AIDS: new computational methods, new understanding of key HIV proteins, and huge volumes of computational results that have only begun to be explored. Though Phase 1 is winding down, Phase 2 of this enormous project will continue to advance vital research into the world's deadliest virus.

Mapping Cancer Markers on World Community Grid aims to identify the markers associated with various types of cancer. The project is analyzing millions of data points collected from thousands of healthy and cancerous patient tissue samples. These include tissues with lung, ovarian, prostate, pancreatic and breast cancers. By comparing these different data points, researchers aim to identify patterns of markers for different cancers and correlate them with different outcomes, including responsiveness to various treatment options.

Book chapter: World Community Grid will contribute to the future of HIV research
By: Dr. Arthur Olson
Professor, The Scripps Research Institute
8 Dec 2015
"We've been invited to write a chapter for an upcoming book: The Future of HIV-1 Therapeutics. Our chapter focuses on structure-based drug design, and discusses the benefits of "in silico" modeling for dramatically expanding the scope and effectiveness of structure-based research. We pay particular attention to the benefits of the large-scale computation network that we found in World Community Grid."

15 Dec 2015 – Working to detect lung and ovarian cancers before they start
Recent stages of the Mapping Cancer Markers (MCM) project have illuminated the protein-protein interactions and biological pathways involved in lung cancer, and have also suggested surprising results about its biomarkers. Once this current stage is complete, MCM will transition to analyzing ovarian cancer. Thanks to your help, we are making discoveries and helping the international research community. Dr. Jurisica, in particular, is one of the most frequently cited researchers worldwide.

The Strongest Supercomputer on Earth Still Needs Your Laptop to Cure Cancer
Volunteer computing and BOINC, once the future of research, are an ocean of unrealized promise. Why? Its creators don't have a way to reach out to you.
Johnnie Chamberlin
December 20, 2015
A group of California computer scientists has built a tool for analyzing climate change, mapping clean water access, and formulating strategies to eradicate malaria, cancer, and AIDS, all using a system they can rightfully claim to be the most powerful computer network on the planet. And here’s what they want to talk about: How paltry the whole thing is. The Berkeley Open Infrastructure for Network Computing may be rocking 157 petaFLOPS (and counting), but it isn’t nearly as muscular as scientists thought it would be when the idea of volunteer computing emerged in the mid-‘90s.

How to Start Volunteer Computing in 2016
BOINC and World Community Grid volunteers are working to save the world. Joining them is easy.
Joe Carmichael
December 16, 2015
If you’d like to volunteer for a good cause — or several good causes at once — consider volunteer computing. Heralded in the late ‘90s as a future-changing technology and summarily forgotten by the otherwise hyper-social World Wide Web, it’s still waiting for you to join, and to support the world’s most cutting-edge research. OK, now that you’ve considered that for a moment, go ahead and do it, because it’s really simple. Imagine all the effort of slacktivism, but with verifiable returns on finding quasars and understanding climate change.
