Ethnic Studies Ban in Tuscon, Arizona (6)

I wanted to bring this to the Dollar's attention, as I have only just learned about this now. Please note that this is in no way trying to incite violent or aggressive actions against anyone on either side of this argument, that being said let me begin.
In Tuscon Arizona, one of my childhood homes, the government has banned ethnic studies classes with the claim that they are dividing students based on their race. On paper, this seems like an iffy idea with hearts in the right place but reacting in a completely incorrect manner. I watched some footage from some of the ethnic studies classes and saw nothing that divided one group from the other. The classes taught people about their racial background and history (the example I watched was that of the Mexican ethnic studies class). The classes are open for anyone to join in, not just those of the race being studied. The politicians that were trying to ban these classes were actually invited to the classes, which they promptly refused to do and lied about it on live television (their lies were exposed about thirty seconds after they were made). I could go on and on about this, but the point is that these classes are dividing no one and are only helping students learn more about where they come from and how to appreciate other peoples' racial background and history. I move that we, the Dollars, attempt to do something to make this issue more known today. The more people that know about this issue, the more people will stand up and realize what is wrong. If you want more details behind the ban, look up the documentary Precious Knowledge.

As a side note, as someone who used to live in Tucson, I am appalled that anyone would be against teaching someone about their culture. I understand where these politicians' ideas are coming from, but without actually seeing what goes on in those classes they are making assumptions that have no merit nor legitimacy.

https://www.facebook.com/saveethnicstudies Found a Facebook group dedicated to this, might be a good idea to keep up-to-date with it.

This does seem troubling, but nothing new. With the recent changes to AP US History, by subsequently glossing over the negative aspects of our past, IE. Jim crow laws, and trail of tears.

This seems just as an attempt to further the republican agenda of white washing the American educational system.

Bump. I feel like we should seriously try to look into this more.

To be honest, my history classes have all actually focused on the problems that we have experienced in our past. While that is clearly different in other places, it isn't something global. I feel that we should nip this sort of stuff from happening before it gets out of hand.
