Ecosia/Blackle (52)

1 Name: HAM : 2015-06-08 12:43 ID:+YBTBlug [Del]

We know everyone loves Google, but what if every time you searched using Google you could something beneficial? So I'm introducing Ecosia and Blackle!

Ecosia is a search engine that works just as well as Google. The only difference? It plants a tree for every search you make! While searching, it does add a bit of advertisements, but all the money Ecosia makes from these ads go towards donating for tree planting (another reason to not get ad block, people, it's terrible and takes money away from the internet). You can easily set it up so that whenever you search through your url bar thing, it automatically searches through Ecosia and plants a tree! Still not convinced? Click here!

Now onto Blackle. Blackle is exactly like Google, the only difference is it's completely dark. Why? To save energy of course! Producing white on your screen takes the most energy out of all the colors (monitors/screens alone when turned on take A LOT of energy, so get into the nice habit of turning off your screen when you're not using them/turning the brightness down when you don't need it that high). And likewise, black takes the least amount of energy. This way, whenever you're on the website Blackle or searching through it, it saves energy otherwise wasted to produce that nice white that Google shines.

Side note: Want to have an impact every time you simply open a tab? Look at the Tab For a Cause thread!

>>1 Blackle only works on CRT televisions. It actually costs less energy to produce white on LCD and LED monitors. They function by producing a set amount of light, then blocking sections of it, and the more blocking the more energy expended. I should note this is a physical design, not a setting on the monitor. So white actually uses the least energy on an LED/LCD. But, if you are using a tube tv/CRT monitor, then Blackle will reduce energy use.

There was a post about this in the Smaller Missions Thread which featured Blackle.

Ecosia is something I haven't heard of but will start using. I like the advertisement for fundraising idea, it's very easy and there's no shortage of demand from advertisers to place ads.

HAM how did you find out about these websites. If they are actually doing something for the environment every time we search I bet we can make this viral and get many people to use it.

Ohh I planted 2 trees from using Ecosia already xD
That one's cool and works really well~

>>2 stop using facts against me

I didn't know about the monitor thing, thank you for telling me, but I don't know what monitor type I have. I guess it doesn't matter anyway since I use Ecosia to plant trees instead of Blackle now :D

>>3 I internet hardcore. But yes, I agree, I try to inform people about things like this as much as I can :3

>>4 yee~!

>>5 If it's flat, it's LCD/LED. Tube TV's/monitors are named such because they're big out the back.

You can also change your color contrast to be white if you have a flat monitor. On Windows it's preset, I don't know about Linux or OSX.

>>5 Ah hahaha, my tree count is at 37 xD
It's probably because whenever I'm bored I google "pasta" for no reason... so now I just use ecosia for that--

Just a head up, but Ecosia doesn't plant a tree for every search you make.

The average amount of searches are 45, for every tree that gets planted. But it is definitely true, that all of the ad revenue Ecosia gets goes to planting trees! So its still as great, they use all the money they can on a great cause.

And also, you can use both Tab for a Cause and Ecosia at the same time. Double as much charity!

With Tab for a Cause you donate money to charity (you can choose which), for every new tab you open! And when you have opened the new tab, you can search with Ecosia. Just make sure you select it in settings first! ;)
