Scam Watch (42)

Hello,

I made this thread because I have a request for everyone that's in the Dollars. This request is simple. IF you know of any scams, such as: phishing, credit scams, payday loans, fraudulent leasing companies. I want us to compile our own list of these things. The second part of this request is that we must make a website that acts like a wikipedia for scams. Similar to what Cult Watch does as an organization.

This project is not going to be easy, also once we make the website we need to think of ad designs we can make and get them in the eyes of the public, via youtube, google, maybe even local television and radio.

This project needs to be trans-national. Basically let's do something real here guys. Every single scam imaginable. IRL, on the internet, where-ever. This will serve as an educational tool for citizens on every continent. Also I want this to be more of a library of humanity's ugliness. It needs to be documented.

Anyway if anyone is down for something like this please respond here, share your ideas on what we can do to implement this. Create a realistic timeline, etc. This might be a 6 month to 3 years project.

Teamviewer scam

My dad recieved a call from India. My intuition said something bad was going to happen that day. And my heart was beating fast. Recently, my dad recieved more 'unwanted' calls. Mostly from telemarketers, that is. This call however, made me nervous. It was longer than usual, and was not from a relative. At first I believed it was a lawyer, but when I heard Mac, it was different.

From what I remeber what he said, I couldn't hear clearly, because my dad didn't want me to pester him With commentary)"
"We are from an Anti-Virus Company. You have a Virus on your Windows."
My dad had a mac, and was running windows on VMWare Fusion.
"Oh it still affects your computer. Go on Internet Explorer"
My dad went on Firefox, it didn't matter as much.
"Then search Team Viewer and download"
STOP. Obviously scamming and attempting to steal information. He already new that, and jsut played along.

My small research:
Teamviewer allows screensharing.
((I'm tired right now...))

This seems like a great idea but it could be har to get the information in from a forum thread, instead you should make a website right now where anyone can anonymously fill in a template and upload it to a database. If you include contact information of the scammers (phone number, adress, email, country etc) it could even be of great help for police. If you can't program such a website yourself, im sure there are people here in the dollars who are willing to help you.
By adding the info to a database you could make an easy search engine for finding relevent information quickly. Also be sure to thing the template through thoroughly because otherwise, when you update it the old information will become usless.

so there is one ive heard about where people try to get your credit card pin number using a infrared iphone case to look at the key pad after you use it and see where the heat signatures were the hottest to know where you pushed the buttons. the way to avoid it is simply hold all your fingers over the pad as you type leaving a heat signature on every number. not sure if this helps but this is the one ive learned about in school

>>1 I think that this is a good idea, but to be really seen by citizens you need to adverise a lot this website. I don't have much time, but I will support this mission on Italian Dollars level. First of all I will link this post with the translation on our page/forums ect and then I could help with the design for this "SCAMS" website.>>3 Gave a nice idea. Also give me the concrete name you want to give to it and more specific things that will be listed. Since the scam in internet website already exists,I think you should add the companies that exploit workers, animals and the environment. In this way people will try to avoid from buying their stuff. If we take it seriously and write a good list in english,I'll help you with the transpation in other languages I know. We can stay in contact if you want. Here's my email : memagucci@gmail.com

I think I might be able to help too.
Although listing things that are private, is something I won't help with, even if scammers are doing a bad thing.
I have a few requests:
1) I'd like this website to not resemble ED, Encyclopedia Dramatica, which would ruin other's personal lives.
2) I also don't want this site to be the 'main target' for people who oppose the idea, for instance, hackers.
3) If by any chance this site becomes more noticable, the list of scams need to dial down a bit over time. Once unnoticable, it may resume posting again. (This can be done 1-3 times)
4) Preferably I rather not be involved with the police, but I find that listing the actual scam would be fine enough, and it's details according to victims.
5) Cite where you got the information, and it's original URL. It is fine to list victim's names though, at the very least.

I think I might just email it though. :P

along the lines of scams, Skype has one. it sends out a friend request to a random person and once they add and "chat" they get a link. this link can only be accessed once signing up and inputting credit card details, and then takes money out of your account. though i would share that piece of information.

Bump.
I didn't notice this until now in my spam area.
Apparently someone pretended to be my 'mom' without knowing that the email they sent went to their child, along with all of my mom's email contacts. Heres the crazy thing though: about 3 months ago, my mom's Ipad started to show porn. She didn't search up porn, at all, and I don't look up porn on there. She began to freak out, and began to panic.

I wodnered if my mom actually sent it to me, because she doesn't know my email, however I did send things to myself from her Ipad, and her Ipad is the only thing that has my email on it.

While they aren't very common in my neck of the woods, this scam is very common in my state (since the population is the highest here) and nearby states. Be careful and keep a watch for the Irish Traveller scam. It's very common in South Carolina, North Carolina, and Georgia but it can go as far as Florida, Alabama, Tennessee, and Virginia from what I've heard.

What is the Irish Traveller Scam? Well, while not all Irish travelers partake in this and it's not as common as it used to be, this kind of scam is pretty much where a group of people come and offer to fix something on your house. They could fix the roof or paint your house, etc. However, the usually do one or more of a couple of things. Usually they'll ask for an advance on their pay or a prepayment then leave before the job is done. Sometimes if they're, say, painting your house, they'll purchase one or two buckets of paints then fill a bunch of empty buckets with said paint and water to make it look like they used ten buckets instead of two and make you pay extra. Sometimes they'll say it took longer than they thought and make you pay more money. It's also common for them to be selling tools that come at a cheaper price than retail but are still pretty expensive. However, the tools are actually worthless and usually break within a few uses.

Now you may think this is easy to spot but my next door neighbor is a prosecuting attorney and his wife fell for this scam. They'll usually give you fake names and contact information and they're hard to track. Summer is when they're particularly active so be aware those that live in the states near South Carolina.
