We're The Dollars!

Yes, we are. However, we can't even identify each other! How do we know who's in the Dollars and who isn't?
I've read multiple threads addressing this issue and I wanted to make a suggestion. Any ideas for improvement are very much welcome.

I thought about it a lot, but I feel we need some kind of way to identify other members of the Dollars in a way that isn't too strange that it stands out TOO much, but a casual way that us members can pick up on and others can't.

So I came to this: Whenever we greet other people, unless we've already confirmed whether or not they are members of the Dollars, we greet hello by waving to them by raising up our left hand in a "gun" shape and point it at our own heads with the thumb pointing down and the palm facing the person we're greeting.
If the person being greeted IS a member, he or she should greet back in the same fashion.

If multiple known Dollars members are present, only one member needs to greet this way.

That's all I have for now. Clarifications can be asked here in case you're not sure. Suggestions and ideas for improvement can also be made here though I'd like this to be implemented as soon as possible.

i actually like this idea, but we need to get EVERYONE from the gang to read this...

plus, what if someone just does the same thing to u as a joke and u think they're in the dollars?

Its great idea.. but i think its hard. They 'll think im weird if i do that if they weren't Dollars member..

Probably the most significant problem is what you've said considering human nature. But like I said, if it's casually done, a random stranger wouldn't try to copy for no reason. If one is ever unsure, then you could always ask them a question like "Have you heard of the Dollars website?" or neglect talking about the Dollars until you've found out on your own and are sure.

As for CromCruach, the description may sound strange, but the actual action isn't too out of the ordinary. I purposely made the decription of the action detailed so as to prevent confusion. I've tried it out myself and it is perfectly casual.

After all, even if it may still look strange, you can adjust how you do it yourself as long as the general gesture is still there and is recognizable.

I wonder, do we have a proper thread for idenifying other dollars? Or does that go for just promoting dollars in the thread called Propagation, but whatever, a Gesture seems to be better from the other ideas i seen.

Nice idea but it's unusual i think :D i wouldn't do it if i'm in the train and there is someone i know ^^ it would look strange and everybode would think that i am dumb ^_^

This is actually a good idea to use actions to reveal ourselves. Much better than the other threads that suggest to wear something.

OK, it's nice idea but I'm still thinking that we should have any special symbol (some cloth or something similar). + sorry for my English.

We're colourless so clothes and stuff are quite a bad idea, we can atleast have a badge or something that represents us as dollars. maybe have the badge on your school bag or some sort and if others questions us about the badge we can tell them to join the dollars.

I was thinking more about a peace of clothing like a bracelet or something.

Just had a thought: this gesture sounds a lot like one used to indicate a bidding of farewell. Could look kinda weird, even if the other person is a Dollar.

I also like the idea of a badge but how would all the members get one?

Maybe we can ask something like this: Do you know "baccano"? so we are asking for the password for the dollars page. And if the other one says "yes" then he is a dollar if not and he asks you what baccano is, then u just make something up.

It would be nice to figure out who wants to do this and who identifies with this as a group, but I want to stay true to the anime and not use the "gang signs". The whole point of using a color was to signify if you were in or out. That's what happened with the bloods and the crips, that's what happened with the blue square and yellow scarves. I think that if you wanna know if somebody is in the dollars, don't be covert about it. Just ask. If you think that it would get you in trouble or danger for revealing so don't. but otherwise, treat this like it's real and it will be. I like the idea that the author had for this.

I know I'm going to do this in the future! But maybe writing the word "Baccano" on your left pointer finger so if the person does it back, you can be sure and vice versa.

You know, we can always ask the individual people in their country to post their own way showing who's in the Dollars. Since I'm sure not every single person that visit this site is going to see this post, so discussing it with the other members in your country would seem like the best plan... My opinion of course, while this does sound like a nice way of showing you're a member of Dollars,

I totally think that upside down gun to the head works, also if you guys want a logo we could just make the dollars patch. Like when you enter the website and it says DOLLARS in the circle that could be our logo and we could just put it on folders, t-shirts or make it into patches or bracelets to also show we are part of the dollars. I like the idea. I think I can do it but I also like the idea of a bracelet. I understand the Dollars are technically ''colorless" so if we did do a bracelet then I suggest a black ribbon tied on like your left hand with a single clear bead on it. on the topic of bracelets: this would actually look pretty cool, but the reason the Dollars don't have a color isn't just because we don't want to be classified as a "color gang". we just don't want to be identifiable. the great thing about the wave is that whenever you see it, you can decide wether or not you want people to know you're a member.

How about a symbol that fits our way of doing things? You know, something transparent.

I really think this is a great idea. Although I'd forget to do it when I'm outside.

And others might catch on to what I'm doing if they (hypothetically) see me and another Dollars member exchanging the greeting.

I love the gunsign idea and just to be safe we could have the bracelets because it would make it that much harder to lie about being one of us

thats a link to one of the cheapest i could find like 2 bucks but i think it could represent us well because without anything hanging on it, it represents how we take no color or symbol and we are invisible? idk just a thought aside from my previous one of just writing TD or a $ on your hand if you are looking to find and mingle with other members or something

I think it's a good idea but it might be weird just making that sign around friends that you just made and it's a bad thing if your in a gang controlled area

Well, I tried this wave-thing with my best friend, a stranger who was her friend and two at my school, which I don't know more than a "Hello".
The strangers showed me the Peace or Victory sign with their fingers. Also did my bff's friend. My bff copied me.
I don't think anyone on my school are members but I just wanted to see their reaction and the fact that three people showed me Peace and didn't think any further shows that it isn't that weird waving-style but I also think that not any member would think about this all the time. So if you just wave for a few seconds it's easy to be overseen if the other person's not thinking over it.

I actually really like the idea of the hand gesture but PLEASE do be careful with it!! Some people wont understand and take it the wrong way or eve other gangs will see it as a threat so if anything just be careful!!

Hey, I like that idea! But but but.. There are quite a lot of gangs in my area.. (Maybe you won't care) But if you accidentally just show that sign to them, they may treat it as a threat like what some people have said. Not saying that I dislike it, just that it is dangerous. :/

I THINK that the original idea with the upside down gun is pretty original. Maybe someone can post it on main so that everyone knows about it and we can try to find members in public. That would be COOL.

please... i think we should just stick to the wave. having any visible trait that defines us is against the point. we're supposed to be invisible. also, it's not really that big a deal if someone says they're a member and they aren't. it's not like we have defined memberships or anything (i think that's a good thing).

Well... Now my friends will start thinking I'm weird. It's a cool way of greeting, and if my friends see me doing it and think "hey! That's badass!" then they'll probably copy me and do that to other people they know too even though they're not Dollars. I think that cancels out the "safety" of this kind of greeting.

I really like the idea of the wave, and tbh it is easy to do with it it looking too out of place, but I'm not sure I would instantly recognise it if someone did it to me.

Tried this on my school. 2 of my friend copied it later because they think it's funny. Not gonna use it anymore.

To make sure the respondent isn't joking around, there should be a secrete handshake if the hand symbols match. This would make it more secure.

could just ask the person at meet up directly, abd if its a fool (lier) and do a question that only members know, ya know, secret question & answer (can be anything)

The wave is a easy and interesting idea, but that also makes it susceptable to use by non-dollar members, this is okay for some and a concern for others, I am part of the latter group. I think the physical sign is too simple, for others to copy and for us to forget. Maybe accompanied with a verbal confirmation of some kind...

Maybe if we do the wave thing and ask a question...

trying to verify if a stranger is a dollar doesn't make much sense, i think you need to know the guy first, unless you're doing a meetup with fellow dollars.

We can always like do the sign and the second person who receives the signal (gun to head thing) could baccano. Because that's the password and if the person who you are doing the sign to says baccano then you know they are in the dollars!!

I've taken a look at the recent replies to the idea I came up with and I'd like to make an update.

IF the person being greeted this way returns the gesture (or nods. I forgot to mention that nodding can be an alternate way to receive the greeting as it is more clear, but dangerous in gang-controlled areas) the greeter must clarify by saying/asking something - anything really - related to a colour, and the one being greeted would answer "I don't have one" or any variation of the phrase with the same meaning.

Of course, the use of this is only if one is confident that he/she can make it sound casual. This additional idea itself is still a work in progress, more so than the original idea, so any suggestions and improvements are welcome.

P.S. On a somewhat unrelated note, if I'm ever on the chatrooms, I'll be hosting a room named "Talk ...". Just for those who want to clarify something quickly.

Besides writing on outselves sound like a cheap method, and it aint hard to get some strings and a bead and make it a bracelet or whatever.
If you do want to do it, you might as well get a tattoo. Because A: Show some more commitment and B: When you dollars are meeting up, decide it amoung yeselfs.

Then if the person is a dollar
"Colorless"

If they are not a dollar

I think I really need to clarify something: do this gesture and ask the question ONLY if you know you will see the person again. It makes no sense to use this gesture and ask the question to random people in the streets or crowded areas. Use this gesture on people you are introduced to, friends you have not clarified of whether or not they're a Dollar, people from work or school that you want to make a friends with or at least an acquaintanceship, etc.

I think that this is rather clever, though then again even this way of greeting someone that you wish to know is in the dollars or not may not all ways work. Take for instance when you greet a friend with a new wave or hand shake that some may replicate it as a greeting back to you not knowing full well what it means. But non the less it is still a rather clever Idea

I think having a special wave is a good idea, but I'm not the type of person who's really comfortable with waving at people I don't really know well... ;w;

I kinda had an idea for the bracelet thing. Maybe we could base it off the Dollars logo. Like, have mostly white/transparent bead along with a few blue, pink, yellow, and green ones kinda spread out. That way, we wouldn't really be identifying as a specific color.

Or maybe we could create a pendant with the Dollars logo on it, and someone could sell it on amazon or something for a cheap price~ just a thought~

It may make people feel awkward though, if they arn't apart of dollars.
Like if the gesture doesn't work for people, why not a phrase.
Like:
"Answer with a dollar." or something like that.
Then the person has to reply "Yes, I'm apart of dollars."
Then a conversation can happen.

Why not?
p1; "We are ruleless."
p2: "We are colorless."
p1 + p2: "We are dollars."

A special phrase isn't that great. Remember that here are still people who don't speak english as their native language so it wouldn't work for all of us.

About the language, just use the same sentences but then in your own languages;
ex. spanish : "(Nosotros) somos sin color." "(Nosotros) somos sin reglas." "(Nosotros) somos Dollar(e)s"
Dutch: "Wij zijn kleurloos." "Wij zijn regelloos." "Wij zijn Dollars."
Japanese: "Ware wa mushoku." ect. you get the vibe rigt? xD

Then I cross my right hand over my diaphragm and bow.

This followed by one the phrase

'H.B.K. at your service.'

Or I just look and smile at you :)

Why a gun to our own head? Why not a casual slow single wave to the left with the right hand to greet a fellow dollars and a nod while holding the front rim of a hat that may or may not be there to acknowledge a fellow dollars.

I like the idea of the original poster of the thread, and the idea of asking "if you were a color, which one would you be" If they are a member of the dollars, they should answer "colorless" I think we should spread the word.

I just finished the first season finally. So Im new but I kind of like the ask what color they would choose xD I think that kind of question would be a question the series would have in it haha. I mean you could even have the Dollar logo somewhere on your clothing like a patch.

Well to be the honest I think he which color would you be would be the coolest in my opinion. and Personally I think a lot of people would forget the "secret Dollar greeting" and/or mess up doing it. Meaning me I would mess it up xD. the having the Dollar logo on your clothing is cool, but not everyone would be able to do it themselves, or don't have somone to do it for them. I am new here though so thats just my opinion/suggestion on that mater

I think this question thing is really really good but i just don't feel like Askany this every person "XD I think it's great but in mine opinion we should have a special move like a small waving/salute with right hand. You know, put your hand up (not complete, just a bit to the high of your chin) and wave it to the right.

Since everyone seems to be on the same page with this, would you guys be okay with us adding this to the FAQ as the official greeting? The mods should close this thread when it's done.

Alright, I think Kanra's has the right idea, though perhaps not as obvious like Mnemonic's or like a phrase. Phrases and actions catch on too easily on to people on the outside even if they do not know what our meaning of it is. We need something subtle, like a specifically designed something that looks common and ordinary, but is also not like any other item on the market, something that only people within the Dollars can receive. It doesn't have to be a symbol or a colour, it just needs to be physical in some way. So that this website isn't the only identification.

As for KANRA's statement, I have to bring up the most important factor of the 'salute': it must be casual. No stiffness, no need for specific order or anything like that. Small changes can be made to help with making it more comfortable and that would therefor make it vary enough between us that people don't catch on, but makes it still recognizable. So there's that.

It is certainly a difficult issue to address, and one of the biggest problems is that there are so little users who are spread out all over the world, so identifying one another is insanely difficult. One way we could fix this is raise awareness of the site in our local areas and then arrange meeting times & places in those said areas on the mission board, identifying members in some small yet obvious way. The way must also be something one can keep up for a long time, as I doubt members will meet straight away without a bit of hesitation. This is why you can't jut stand there saluting or repeating a phrase constantly because the general public will think you're crazy and members will once again hesitate to approach and/or alert other members.

Lastly, I think the meeting of gang members shouldn't be arranged just for the fun of it. That would simply make it awkward for everyone. You have to have something planned and be serious about doing it if you're going to call a meeting.

I feel like the salute or phrase should only really be used if you've advertised the Dollars around your area or to people you've invited into the Dollars [Assuming the salute was explained in the advertisement or assuming they've seen it.] This could be some kind of confirmation.

^ It doesn't necessarily have to be to find Dollars in your area. It's not unusual for passerby to hop in when there's something going on in public, so it could be used for verification that those at a real life meet up actually got there from the site.

It's more straightforward and easy. Maa. We could maybe recongise some others if we chat in the chatrooms daiyo ne.

We're supposed to be anonymous so if we go up and ask them face to face, it sort of ruins the point of the Dollars.

I'm gonna go with Starken's phrase (or rather question) where we ask someone what their favourite colour is and if they reply colourless then they are a Dollar. However, we need some form of non-verbal insignia as just going up to random people and asking "what's your favourite colour?" could come off a bit odd if you are unfamiliar with the Dollars or do not recognize it as the greeting/giveaway as such.

I'm assuming the greeting, if this is a proper poll, will be put up for everyone using this website to see. The main issue is that even if it's put up for all to see, some may ignore it or other posts may lower how visible it is.

Actually, the Dollars in Durarara!! are unique because they have no color, sign or greeting, lol. The Dollars are supposed to be mysterious and under the raddar, But, if you insist on a greeting. I think the first idea is the best. Bracelets, hats and shirts would defeat the point of the dollars. That would make us similar to the yellow scarves. Forgot who, but someone above already mentioned this. Nice job ignoring him/her.

Am I the only one who just asks a friends if they're in dollars or invites them to enter the site? I don't think that even if you see a person in the street with the necklace or bracelet like the dollars ones you'd stop them..I'm too shy to do that. Bump. Again, >>287 has the right idea. Dollars are colorless. Outfits and accessories identify us. While the group itself may be made public, the original idea was for the members to remain anonymous and anyone could be a Dollar.
I do think the gesture is a good idea, because it's a way to recognize other Dollars members, but accessories seem too much, unless it's an event. Again, it's up to the individual to choose how they want to represent us as a community. ^.^

Seems legit. I'm down for a simple salute. I can incorporate that in my usual habits. I'm fairly theatrical as it is, so me doing a salute wouldn't even spark anything from those who know me. It's not something that I will do to a random person walking through a hallway, but more of something I would do to a friend that might not even be in The DOLLARS. It's something that I will do in public, where LARGE numbers of people could see me do it where you'd expect to get the highest possible returns. Like in a mall, I'll salute the fuckin' air in a general direction. If people notice it, then they know they can count on me in that area. If they don't then they just aren't part of The DOLLARS, and probably will think I'm motioning to someone in that direction, or behind them.

The key to this is CASUAL. Very simple, pretend it's a salutation and walk in a completely different direction afterwards, or just a way to say, "I noticed you," Like you would with anyone you know, and notice in a mall.

Greeting someone like this in passing, like in the hall going from class to class, WOULD be awkward. I don't recommend that, unless you're as much of a fan of theatrics as I am.

This has it's uses. While the story doesn't allow for any identifiable factors in the DOLLARS, we aren't the story. This is real, and as such we need to be able to ID folks in person in large areas, like airports and malls. Just seems like a good contingency plan.

Now, for the final thing to say is .....MAKE THIS YOUR REGULAR GREETING. We are creatures of habit, and the more you do something the more common it is. I fully support the example in >>113. Greet everyone like this, regardless of who you are greeting. This means more people will see it, and people will be able to identify you when you are talking to your friends, and family in public. If anyone asks, tell them it's just a thing you, and your friends do unless you don't mind talking to that person about The DOLLARS. If someone really wants to know if you're a DOLLAR they will flat out ask you, and using this greeting as much as possible basically ensures this.

I'm all for a salute, but maybe not a gun shape.

If a person didn't know exactly why you were doing this, they may get the wrong impression and think you are trying to threaten them. That could seriously backfire.

Plus, if someone saw a gun shape pointed at your head, they might get concerned and call the cops, thus leading to an explanation that could leave the Dollars in a bad light.

A salute is fine, but maybe revise the 'gun' part?

I personally find the salute a little more obvious (in a way) and making signals and salutes can be banned or not allowed in certain places. It could also offend someone accidentally and cause a major problem. And other people may copy the salute and confuse us Dollars. The shy members (I don't have anything against shy people) are shy, so they will feel extremely uncomfortable making certain gestures.

The question, in my perspective, is nice and easy. If we ask someone which color they would like to be, the would most likely say their favorite color, a color they represent or answer as 'I don't know'. The majority of the population couldn't possibly answer colorless because we asked for a color so they will feel the need to answer with a color.

For these reasons, I vote for option number two. I think I overdid it.

I'm new here and don't know much.... But in real life, I'm actually the most shyest person.... So I can't do that.... But I guess Comment number 306, TheHiddenUnknown 's option is nice. Since it's very normal. Like, if someone walks to you and asks your favorite colour, you'll just say ‘I don't know' rather than waving like that. Okay, first up, in the anime, people literally just asked, straight up, "Are you in the Dollars?". But! We are not in the anime or the manga or anything else, and I think the whole question thing is a good idea. The gesture could be a bit awkward for some people or in some areas, you know?
I'll test the question, just for kicks, on my friends. So... If you get an email from someone asking that question, it's probably me... If my friends are on this. Probably not.

I'm really liking the talk of an app/messaging system. I think that's probably the best, because it's still really anonymous and definitely colorless. The gesture is pretty cool and I wouldn't mind using it within reason, but since some people feel like it's too awkward or too much of a giveaway. I vote for 3, because you can always just go straight to the question if you're shy or worried about signs.

I believe The Dollars were just hard to identify. It doesn't have to be anonymous.

I really think we should just stay completely anonymous with no way to identify each other. Although I understand people want to see who around them are also a Dollar, I think there are too many things in the world that would clash with what we are trying to do. Example: A simple gesture can be nothing in one part of the world but can be extremely rude in another region. Also since a lot of you are suggesting we use the Dollar’s patch we have to remember that there is a good possibility that a fan of Durarara will have one since it comes from the anime. As for finding a colour... the main point of the Dollars is being colourless and we should honour that. And some sort of jewelry...Some of us may not be able to get their hands on something or even be able to make it. Or even if they can there are over 7 billion people on this earth. People will have the same jewelry even if they have never heard of the Dollars before. I think if you want to meet some people in the Dollars around you why not schedule a meetup around where you are. I think it would be a lot more easier and even honour the original idea of the dollars...

As for the topic at hand, it's best if we stay anonymous, but however, if you still wish to meet people of the Dollars in person, there's always...places. Like this website was created from the anime Durarara...why not meet at an Anime Convention? We have Dollars all over the world, so why not meet at a convention with nothing to do but anime?

P.S. If you meet at a convention, try to help out there, such as preventing sexual harassment (cause you know there are a lot of pretty underdressed cosplayers) or even help out a person who looks lost. Gee, this is sounding like a mission. Anyway, honor the Dollars and what it's created for.
