It's a Chrome App, and every time you open a new tab it raises a fraction of a cent for charity. It doesn't sound like much, I know, but with the thousands of people doing it, it adds up fast. Not to mention that with the amount of time some of us are on the internet it adds up fast. I've been on it for 64 days and raised enough money for one person to have water for 1 year.

How does Tab for a Cause raise money for charity?

There are a couple banner advertisements in the corner each time you open a New Tab. We get paid for these advertisements, and then give all the profits to charities that partner with us. Tab for a Cause is free to use and always will be.

No matter what our costs are, we give at least half of our revenue to charity. Historically we’ve given upwards of 90%. We use the rest of the revenue for two purposes: (1) to cover costs, which include hosting/server costs and food for our team; and (2) to reinvest in getting more Tabbers so that we can give more to charity in the long term.

How much do I raise per New Tab?

Though it varies greatly, a single tab raises between 1/10 and 1/3 of a cent for charity, which adds up to a lot! Check out our financials to see the impact Tabbers make together.

Then there's also hearts.

What are Hearts?

Hearts are a Tab for a Cause currency that you earn for opening tabs and referring new friends. You can then donate your Hearts to the charities that you would like to support. After gaining a certain number of Hearts, you level up!

What happens when I donate my Hearts?

When you donate a Heart, you are essentially casting a vote for money to be given to your selected charity. At the end of each quarter, we take all of the money raised through Tab for a Cause and divide it amongst the charities based on the number of Hearts that were donated to each cause during the quarter.

Okay, so there's a scale looking thing in the left. Open that, and that's where you can join a group. Anything that I post here will be about the Dollars USA group. Click on a group to see stats.

So far, six of us have raised enough money for nine people to have clean water for a year. Which is awesome! Each week or something it changes to the most voted cause, so that's just how much money we raised. I don't know, it's confusing.

Regardless, I'M THE TOP TABBER IN THE GROUP SO FAR! This changed ever seven days, SO YOU HAVE A CHANCE TO BEAT ME! I don't spam tabs, though you can. I still get a pretty nice average of 20 a day.

I'm loving this for two reasons.
1) Nature is fucking awesome and beautiful. Plus the animals are adorable, and destroying nature is making the adorable animals extinct, which is very sad.

2) Science is fucking awesome, and science has proven that nature is fucking important because it protects against global warming, which will cause the next mass extinction. For those that don't know, we're in the midst of the quickest mass extinction to date, and we're the cause of it. HOWEVER! We can stop this if we save nature and stop polluting very soon.

Since I got this extension, I haven't changed my browsing habits that much (it maybe adds a one or two second difference to getting to a new website from the new tab page) and to be honest, it feels great to know that by simply using the internet almost the same way as I did before is going to help people out! In light of the recent event that Tab for a Cause is having, we have more competition for the top 5 slots for the groups. Basically, this will last until April 6th.

It's basically a tournament style competition for colleges. The top 64 colleges are competing in pairs every few days, and the winner each goes on to pair up and compete again and so on and so fourth.

Because of this, college students in their groups are causing the college groups hearts count to sky rocket, bumping us down.

In case anyone's wondering why we're not top 10 anymore.

I have a Razer keyboard and mouse, because it I use Razer Synapse app to make a macro. hehe

All y'all youngins recently joinin Tab For a Cause, thinkin it's a big deal that the Dollars are in the top ten. Back in mah day we held a six, dueling against Princeton University. We even made it into the top five for a while. The good ole days.

For real though, we've done some good work. Like, it's an actual difference we're making, even if it seems little. This mission has always been a perfect fit for the Dollars and a prime example of what we can do together. Some friendly competition doesn't hurt either.
Also, I miss Firelily. Where's firelily at?

Well I did think of a neat little trick.... if yourr able to leave your computer/laptop running, use a mouse recordee and repeat open and close a tab just once or twice. Then set the orogram to repeat that action X amount of times. It seems a little cheap, but for a good cause right? Max hearts earnable per day is around 500 i believe.

I literally just constantly use my laptop already so every time I am going to click unto something I always say open a new tab!! This really is a great way for mass numbers to work together!

I've done a lot of research on ads and how they work, mostly because I don't want ad companies stalking me, and they engineer ads to the users taste to get more clicks because clicks are more money.

Which is how Youtubers get money. They get money per second the movie ads are viewed and more money per click.

I've been doing this since it came out and it's actually pretty cool, I found out even my school is doing it.

Since everyone is talking about money and actually raising it, I'll like to point out a few things.

First off, you need to read what Bob says here: >>521 and >>511

She's right, I've done light research in the past in how ads make money and how Youtubers make money, and so I know this.

Second, refreshing your page a thousand times earns you more hearts, but it doesn't help raise money if you're not viewing these ads. This is why you see our numbers fluctuating so much, because the site HAS to crack down on bots or else adverts won't give them money for the ads. In short, setting your page up to refresh the site automatically is hurting more than it's helping.

Next off, you have to SEE the ads. If you have adblock plus, then you're not seeing the ads. How do you see the ads with adbockplus? Well, you start by clicking the button for ABP in the top right of your window. Your click options. Go to whitelisted domains. Then enter tabforacause.org. Or, Bob brought up using AdBlock rather than AdBlockPlus.

Next, More money is brought in by clicking on ads. Sure, you don't get hearts for it to donate, but you're bringing in more money that'll go to these organizations chosen. So if you're doing this to seriously do some good, you'll click on a few ads. Otherwise, you're just here for the competition which is fine as long as your actions are still bringing in revenue to donate.

Please keep this in mind when you install TabForACause to raise money. You have to come in with the mindset of the mission rather than just for fun, otherwise you're not really helping.

CTRL + T: opens a new tab
CTRL + Tab: move one by one through your open tabs
CTRL + Shift + Tab: same as above, but in the opposite direction

That's for Chrome on Windows. Mac probably uses CMD instead of CTRL. Other browsers might have slightly different shortcuts.
