GET INVOLVED. STOP AT NOTHING. THE WORLD MUST KNOW.

I dare you to stop scrolling through your dashboard. Stop checking your Facebook newsfeed that you’ve already checked two seconds ago. Stop updating your Twitter and seeing what your favorite celebrities are saying. Stop watching funny and nonsense videos on Youtube. Take time to educate yourself to MAKE A DIFFERENCE in this world. This is your chance!

WATCH THIS VIDEO.

Who is JOSEPH KONY?

He is THE WORST LIVING CRIMINAL. He abducts children and makes them use guns to kill their own parents. He takes girls and forces them to be sex slaves. He calls his abducted children the Lord’s Resistance Army, AKA the LRA. He has abducted over 30,000 children and forced them to be child soldiers in Central Africa. He remains at large because he is INVISIBLE to the world. FEW know his name, even FEWER know his crimes.

WE ARE MAKING HIM FAMOUS! Because when he is, the world will unite against him and demand his arrest.

We can help make a change. We can make a difference.

I feel so inspired. I feel the need to help and make a difference. This has to happen in 2012. We can’t let him go around and keep doing this to children in Central Africa. Let’s make his name known so he can be stopped.

HE CAN NO LONGER BE INVISIBLE!

LETS WORK TOGETHEr DOLLARS AND STOP THE LRA. STOP JOSEPH KONY.

I gotta commend you for a well written post and the fact your heart is in the right place, but all in all he's in Africa and we have no details pertaining to any other possible locations. I can't really do much here.

Thank you! I was going to post this video I'm glad someone did! If everyone can help out at least on April 20th, or share the video on facebook, you could make such a difference. We may not be in AFRICA but we are all human beings and this injustice can't just go unnoticed simply because you don't know anyone who's doing it, or because you think you can't do anything, because you can, you can make a HUGE difference! PLEASE don't ignore this!

This mission.

I was watching Ellen and lurking through the BBS at the same time when I found out about Kony. I just finished the documentary and I must say, this is a great idea. I think this mission will be a great success. Not only are people uniting against a common enemy, it's easy to help because all they're asking is for you to spread the word. I'm looking forward to April 20th and chances are, I'll take part in the fun.

I want to see how people are going to react to this though. Something like this is unprecedented, so it'd be nice to see a change in the system.

It doesn't matter if we're in Africa, Canada, the US, Australia-- wherever you are, if you visit the website or even share this video, then you'll be such a help to the cause. You won't get personal notoriety, you won't be hailed as a hero, but you will be part of the group of people that stopped war crimes such as Kony's.

22 Name: BarabiSama!!C8QPa1Mt : 2012-03-06 20:48 ID:8BFAU8u4 [Del]

Ahteyu makes a good point.
So what if we don't live in Africa; even by sharing the video, we help somewhat. And so what if we won't be held as personal heroes? At least we were part of a group that helped change the lives of many. And isn't that what The Dollars are for? To help others?

This is the next step for us to remind our government that we are a country for the people by the people. So go forth and make this man FAMOUS. This is PERFECT for the dollars. We're always talking about putting signs around saying "The Dollars" or "The world isn't as bad as you think" but now we can do that kind of thing with a purpose. I'm doing this, and going to get as many people I can to do it as well. April 20th, here we come.

This is something the Dollars should be all over, and I'm sure people will be enthusiastic towards this project. Make sure you watch the video ALL THE WAY THROUGH, because the one of the most important parts of information is at the end. The night of April 20th all the Dollars that can should go out and put up the posters and attack everything with stickers. People who can make buttons, make them. People who can draw, make your own posters, Copy them. GET INVOLVED DOLLARS. GO.

Some reading you all should do.

Quote from the link I posted:
"Military intervention may or may not be the right idea, but people supporting KONY 2012 probably don’t realize they’re supporting the Ugandan military who are themselves raping and looting away. If people know this and still support Invisible Children because they feel it’s the best solution based on their knowledge and research, I have no issue with that. But I don’t think most people are in that position, and that’s a problem."

While Kony is a horrible human being, one should always examine each situation critically.

60 Name: Kaosu !/cNG.9l1XI : 2012-03-07 15:24 ID:j37kmx4A [Del]

I agree with the people who are being negative in the respect that you shouldn't join this movement just based on this video/movement being made popular by everyone. I'm joining because I heard about it and investigated by looking through articles from the past decade about this. Please don't support a cause so easily and so uninformed, look into the topic first.
A movement is only strong if the people behind it are informed and can defend their purpose. That means making an argument other than "we need to stop him, cause he's bad and hurts people, etc."
>>59 Yes I realize that, but pretty much we can fix what we can and maybe along the way something will happen during all this change and action where the government of Uganda will be altered. Since the people now can get better educations without as much fear, they will become able and willing to defend themselves so a lot will change over the next decade or so in Uganda because of education

I've seen the stands both for and against the support of Invisible Children's production and movement, and have decided to go forward with it. Just because some sage from Yale frowns on the idea doesn't mean the PEOPLE are mislead in their intent and actions. I love what's being done, and how everyone is united regardless of where they're from. These cynical responses of "it's not our problem" or "it's just a fad, and too shallow to make a difference in this complex problem" piss me off, to say the least. I have friends who have personally suffered at the hands of rapists and murderers. I see the effects on them daily, and I wouldn't wish it on ANY other human being, especially not a mass of innocent children. This has to END. Whether or not we can actually make something happen, at least we're trying as a united body, you know? I'm not about to sit back because it's not "my problem".

I'm all for capturing Kony, but there are too thing I want to bring to attention.

1) The original poster didn't write that speech. It's part of the invisible children campaign and has appeared on numerous sites already.

2) Invisible Children is a pretty lousy non-profit. Only 32% of the funds they raise actually go to direct action. That's something, but the money is better off trusted in the hands of a more reliable non-profit. Sadly, I'm not sure whether there are any other groups surrounding this issue at the moment. You can view the financial reports revealing Invisible Children's spending at this link:

http://c2052482.r82.cf0.rackcdn.com/images/737/original/FY11-Audited%20Financial%20Statements.pdf?1320205055

I know I said I only had to say two things, but one more thing comes to mind. I really think the slogan should be to make Kony "infamous" rather than "famous." There's effectively little distinction, but it villanizes him more effectively.

To be honest, it's not really our problem.
I mean yeah, he's a terrible guy, but do we really need to get involved in EVERYTHING?
That's the thing about us humans, we all share emotions, too bad no one really understands what I'm trying to say, but still, it's their problem, not ours.

I was inspired by the first half of the video, but once they started trying to sell me things I instantly became detached. I like some of the points they bring up, and that people are tyring to spread awareness, but as many other people have already pointed out, they’re going about stopping Kony the wrong way. I’m not really sure what the ‘right way’ is, though.

>>84 I interpreted the main goal of ‘KONY 2012’ is to not actually stop Joseph Kony, but to try and get people from all over the world to fight for the greater good. If, in 2012, we do stop Joseph Kony who is dubbed “the worst living criminal in the world”, could we not then join forces again to achieve similar feats and make the world a better place? Kony is just the starting point: to show the world that we do have an amazing amount of power if we all get behind the same cause. I’m pretty sure they actually went over all this in the video.

I’ve probably only re-stated points that have already been covered by others, since it seems like everyone and their dog has already posted on this :I;;;

>>83 Call me an idiot if you will, but I still intend to support it. I've read both sides of the arguements, and I ended up agreeing with the Invisible Children. I don't intend to donate (never really did intend to, whether I had the money or not), but I'm still going to support making everyone aware of Kony and his actions.

To be honest, my main problem with this whole Kony thing is that they're acting like it's the only horrible thing going on right now. In third world countries, shit like this happens all the time. It bugs me that people are trying to help when they seem to not even understand that basic fact.

>>59 Plenty of militaries do, and plenty of militaries will continue to do so. For a long while, the American military did the same, especially when it came to rape. Things like that will always be going on where the soldiers are not properly controlled, but that doesn't mean people should turn a blind eye on the other problems within the country. Corrupt militaries are everywhere; that shouldn't be so much of a shock.

I think people should help, but KONY 2012 is a joke of an organization who is just out to get your money. It would really be better if we empowered the people of Uganda to stand up against him and maybe provided them with resources, but we shouldn't do everything for them.

>>87 We're not doing everything for them. We sent 100 advisers, not 100,000 troops. If we really interfered, he'd either be caught in a few months, of flee the country/continent completely. The United States has the resources and tech available, but in actuality, all we're doing for Uganda is providing military strategy, and some other resources.

Not sure if everything I just said made sense, but I'm pretty sure it's accurate.

Alright so after doing some reading, (Thanks to all those who commented about Invisible Children) I have to say, yeah, they aren't that good a group. And no, they should not be supported. HOWEVER that doesn't change the fact that Kony must be put down, and that they, with the Kony 2012 campain, brought him into the mainstream puplic eye. I'd say this is just another classic case of one evil (IC) trying to stop another evil (Kony).

>>101 While IC may not be a great group, I don't think it's right to call them "evil" considering that they're the ones that brought this to light. How are we supposed to help without IC? Don't get me wrong, I do not support the group at all and i will not donate because of it's shadiness (which has been present LONG BEFORE KONY2012). I'm just wondering what's the next step beyond awareness? Advertising using posters and stickers is great, but buying this merchandise from IC is probably not the best idea. Ignoring this problem is wrong, but so is supporting an organization that dishonestly makes profit by appealing to the sympathies of the people. Sadly it's a choice for the lesser evil, and unless someone can name a group that is legitimately putting its efforts toward catching Kony rather than making money, we have limited options.

there are a couple of things we can do to help stop Kony without supporting IC:
-make sure politicians know we care! letters, calls, posters (doesn't necessarily have to be from IC). giving up 5 minutes of sitting around is not difficult
-support and encourage awareness, but not necessarily the IC

I suppose that it could be put that IC is far lesser of two evils, but I'd rather think that it's corruption/stupidity vs evil instead. Is that more fitting?

Now, I'm making a $3 monthly donation to IC not because they're going to directly stop Kony, but because at this time I believe that the advertisement is important. The fact that every day, more and more people become aware of the situation is critical in opening the eyes to not just one thing, but so many other incidents. People begin doing research on similar situations, and begin trying to do something about them. So if my $3 a month can buy a few fliers to raise the awareness level, I'm more than willing to pay it.

This is a picture of the founders of Invisible Children.

Joseph Kony is undoubtedly a cruel man, but lets look at some fun facts around the issue and the organization Invisible Children (after you read what I wrote check out some of the links, especially the article from The Guardian which has scholars and experts expressing both sides of the issue and of IC):

The issue:
-The LRA is only 250 soldiers strong at this point.
-The LRA hasn't been in Uganda since 2006.
-Ugandan army and Sudan People’s Liberation Army are riddled with accusations of rape and looting.
-US Africa Command has been trying to stop Kony for years, which only results in failure and retaliation from Kony.
"In general, we're concerned [about] the catastrophic consequences for the local population," Van Damme said. "We've seen in the past, over and over again, how there's been a lot of retaliation by the LRA, the burning of villages, maiming people, a lot of killings, with little military success." - Steven Van Damme, Oxfam's protection and policy advisor for the whole of eastern Congo
-The footage in the video and the framing of the issue are from 2004-2006.
-To get to Kony you'd have to ultimately kill some of his army...which consists of children soldiers.....
-"While the extreme atrocities committed by the LRA cannot be justified by any 'political cause', the LRA did originally emerge as a direct reaction to extreme atrocities committed since the late 1980s by the government and armed forces of Uganda against the Acholi people in northern Uganda. The person in charge since 1986 until today is Ugandan president Yoweri Museveni, who is himself a former rebel army leader and came to power by force."

Invisible Children:
-Only 37% of money raised went to direct services (if you support the issue you may want to choose a more worthwhile charity).
-Of this 37%, a third goes to their scholarship program, which is undoubtedly helpful, but it only supports 700-800 children. So a MILLION dollars is being used to support ONLY 700-800 children...
-Their "accountability and transparency" is a 2 out of 4 stars on charity navigator.
-They have never been publicly audited.
-The group is in favor of direct military intervention, and their money supports the Ugandan government’s army and various other military forces.
- Foreign Affairs has claimed that Invisible Children (among others) “manipulates facts for strategic purposes, exaggerating the scale of LRA abductions and murders and emphasizing the LRA’s use of innocent children as soldiers, and portraying Kony — a brutal man, to be sure — as uniquely awful, a Kurtz-like embodiment of evil.”
-"So far the organisation has released 11 films and run film tours across the US and other countries to raise awareness. In Uganda, it has given scholarships to 750 children, and helped to re-build schools there and in centralo Africa. The organisation's accounts show it's a cash rich operation, which more than tripled its income in 2011, with more than two thirds of its money coming from "general donations".

The accounts suggest nearly 25% of its $8.8m income last year was spent on travel and film-making with only around 30% going toward programes on the ground. The great majority of the money raised has been spent in the US. $1.7 million went on US employee salaries, $357,000 in film costs, $850,000 in film production costs, $244,000 in "professional services" - thought to be Washington lobbyists - and $1.07 million in travel expenses . Nearly $400,000 was spent on office rent in San Diego."

Military intervention may or may not be the right idea, but people supporting KONY 2012 probably don’t realize they’re supporting the Ugandan military who are themselves raping and looting away. Educate yourselves a little bit before supporting a particular nonprofit.

Not saying Kony isn't a horrible person. Just thought people might want the entire picture before they support an organization.

Also I have noticed that people have been responding to the shares with IC's response to most of these criticisms. Most of the responses, just like their video, are framed very positively and lack a real substantive dialogue. It is more piecemeal BS that is coming from the creators. I'd love to see some positive third party feedback. So far all the unbiased, third-party feedback seems either neutral or negative.

>>137 I agree with how everyone is only getting fired up about it because of everyone else but, personally, I've known about this guy for awhile now and what hes doing isn't right. If you go on the LRA tracker sight and actually look and see whats going on its insane. They have an image of a dead 12 year old girl with her head busted open due to an attack from the LRA officers. I did a research project on him for school last year and when he recruit kids for his miltary he forces them to kill their own parents. This guy is a sick and twisted freak. When kids disobey he forces them to cut off their noses and ears and eat their own flesh. So in a way people getting pumped up about this is a really good thing, even though some people are only doing it cause everyone else is doing it. I've done my research, I've read through opinions and facts. I didn't do what I did just because of the video, and it's not the only issue I look at every day. It's certainly not the only mission I do every day. Every month, I try to donate a part of my minimum wage paychecks to various charities. If you don't like spending your money here, on Kony 2012, then spend your money on another mission. Search for "Save Kelsey's Heart" here on our Missions board to help my friend pay her medical bills if you think that this is a waste of money. There's also a charity fund index around here as well. There are plenty of things you could be doing other than discouraging a properly posted mission. Yes, many think this is stupid, but many think otherwise as well. It's my personal belief that if the mission has been presented, arguments have been posted, and people still agree with it, let it be. You've pointed out the faults, now people can read them and make their own decisions. Move onto a mission that you actually support, and discuss it. Make a counter mission, or an alternative one that you think is better than this if it's such a bad idea. If it proves to be accepted, then the worst one of the two will be bumped away and forgotten.

Alright, I'm not entirely sure that every piece of that made sense, because I'm busy searching my house for my moms caffeine stash. Either stop posting controversial links, and complaining about how many sheep there are, or make a damn alternative mission that is BETTER. Please and thank you!

>>137 What are we supposed to do - magicaly solve every problem in the world? Whether everyone jumped on the bandwagon because of one video or not, I don't see the problem. I believe people should educate themselves, yes, but if it IS a good cause, what's the problem with so many people supporting it? As I said earlier in the post, it does bother me that people aren't educated about every bad thing going on in third world countries, but that's generally impossible. We can't all solve every problem or educate everyone on every problem at once. You have to take things one step at a time--one problem at a time--and then work your way up. Once one problem has been shown to the public and action has been taken, go to the next one.

A lot of things start from one video or one article or one picture; that's the way life is. Personally, I think you (just you, and I say this using how you were annoyed at something getting popular by one video as back up) are just being one of those reverse-snobs who is against everything that gets popular. Just because a lot of people follow it, that doesn't make it bad.

There are plenty of bad things about the group, but the links have been posted already, and we have been educated. Nobody has told us what is bad about the cause; why is getting Kony well known so horrible? Why are you so against things that everyone knows about?

Nonetheless, you can all shut up now and focus your attention on better missions. No need to repeat things that have already been said. If you don't like this mission, go spend your time on one you do like and will support. We understand your arguement.

Kony hasn't been heard from since 2006. Get ur facts right before jumping to conclusions. U should be more focused on... I dunno what about the shit happening in Syria.

>>146 Bullshit.

It's not that he hasn't been heard from, it's that he moved to other countries. That's why they're stressing for his arrest even more. He's moved on from Uganda; the video clearly stated that. They were focusing on Uganda to show the effects of what he had done, and then later on showed a map of where he had moved to.

I wonder if the valuable resources near Uganda has anything to do with this. Sending military to Africa would be a convenient means of securing it.

But on a lighter note, sure...

I actually went here to post something about Kony. I recently saw the http://vimeo.com/invisible/kony2012 video and it was pretty inspirational, about as cool as it gets without becoming too sappy. Seriously, guys, it's thirty minutes, but the movie's worth it.

Or so is what people THINK when you go in hiding, and continue to call the shots, secretly.

This video is a sequel to the one in the OP. I suggest that even if you are no longer inclined to partake in this mission, you watch it. It may or may not change your views.

Unfortunately this organization is evil. They take 75 percent of the money they make and spend it on themselves. They support the Ugandan government which does the EXACT same thing as Kony. He has also been supposedly dead for 7 years since the LRA hasn't made a move for 7 years. Learn the facts

>>159 That video was amazing.

Everyone should watch it before jumping on the bandwagon.

Remember that it is just a bandwagon, but you're perfectly capable of trying to contribute in an educated manner. The bandwagon is just a lazy-ass way to get anything done, and usually people forget where the damned thing is actually going in the first place. It's like "THIS IS WHAT ALL THE POPULAR ACTIVISTS ARE DOING" and suddenly being an activist requires little activity.

As for me, I'm going to admit to not giving a shit. Because I don't have enough information on the subject, I don't care enough to research it, nor would I likely have any way of helping given my status as just a college student. Buying shit and donating small amounts of cash to a bandwagon organization isn't helping.
