So my high school just started this so I thought this would be a fun idea. Pretty much, you can read whatever book you want and then, when you've finished, discuss your thoughts about the book here with us. Obviously there will be spoilers into the books if we're discussing them so if you don't like then don't come.

We can also maybe have like a monthly theme. Like each month we could decide on a genre (such as Horror for October) and then we all read a book from that genre, but you don't have to if you don't want to.

Sound good to everyone?

2 Name: ARandomSoul : 2015-05-06 00:07 ID:isl/jfbj [Del]

I'm in. Do have a theme you would want us to do for this month or maybe start that in June to give people a chance to finish books they are currently in the middle of?

3 Name: Janobii : 2015-05-06 06:22 ID:IcveGhwh [Del]

We'll start the themes in June to give people, as well as myself, a chance to finish whatever book they're currently on.

However, I'll take suggestions as to what theme you guys would like for June.

I just finished a book by Sherrilyn Kenyon called Dance with the devil. Its a Dark-Hunter series, where vampires came from the greek mythologies, and are called daimons. Daimons were actually apollites sons/daughters of apollo, the sun god. They killed one of the wifes of apollo, and he cursed them, to never even be seen on the light, given them animalistic characteristics like fangs, they will have to drink their own blood related to survive, and they will have to die on the age 27, were the wife of apollo died. For them, to be able to live longer, they have to suck human soul. There are also another group of vampire looking called Dark-Hunters. They were made by Artemis, to kill off anyone who turned into a daimon, meaning anyone who suck human souls, and protect the humans. Dark-Hunters were also given the same characteristics like fangs and not being able to out in the sun. They were given immortality in exchange for their hearts. To be able to become mortal again, they have to find someone they're compatible with, and let that person hold their heart and ģive it to them directly.

Ok, my explanation sucks. Just search it, if you don't understand.

So Dance with the devil, is the fourth book of the dark-hunter series. It talks about Zarek, a pyschotic dark-hunter who was banished to Alaska, for murdring a village. And Astrid, a justice nymph who will judge zarek, whether its safe for him to live or die. They made love in dreams, the end. The usual erotica with happy endings. If your interested to read it go ahead. I'm don't like giving spoilers to anyone.

In June theme, I think mystery would be good. Its been a while since I've read mystery books.

I like this idea... :3
>>4 I agree with the June theme being mystery. Would be nice if the books were more on the comedic side as well.

Thank you for your contribution! Congrats on being the first person to post a review on here!

Well like I said, you can pick whatever book you want. It doesn't even have to fit with the theme if you don't want.

I like the idea of the mystery theme given I haven't read mystery since I was a kid reading Nancy Drew. I'll have to fit up my Mr. K's or 2nd and Charles soon to see if I can find anything good. Though I might do some online research first to see if I can find something that sounds good.

Anyway, I just finished reading a book called The Zodiac Legacy: Convergence. It's by Stan Lee, Stuart Moore, and Andie Tong. It's a really good read and it actually acts like a comic book in the fact that every few pages there's an illustration. There's even an Avengers reference in one of the pictures which I thought to be pretty clever. And before you ask, yes it is published by Disney but I've always loved the Chinese zodiac so I thought I'd give it a try.

The story revolves around an American boy of Chinese heritage named Steven Lee. On a trip to Hong Kong with his school, Steven Lee ends up getting zapped with some weird light and suddenly has the spirit of the Chinese zodiac Tiger. He is swept up into a world he never imagined joining the team of Carlos and Jasmine, Steven must make a choice. Does he use his zodiac powers to stop the evil Maxwell from destroying all life on earth, or does he pretend this never happened and try to live his normal life?

Spoilers start here:
I have to admit Liam is probably my favorite character. He is an Irish guy who was infused with the spirit of the ram which made him pretty much indestructible. You would think this would make a guy have a huge ego but Liam does pretty well in handling it and his Irish humor is always funny, to me at least.

The authors did well in diversifying the characters in both background and personalities. I'll admit when I first imagined the pig, Duane, I thought him to be some scrawny nerdy little white boy despite him being from South Africa. Then the picture pulled up and it was like "Well hello there Mr. Not what I imagined you to be." There's going to be a sequel, no doubting that, because with that epilogue there's no way that there won't be.

If you want to know more about the story you can look it up or just ask me but overall I thought it was very good. The action scenes were well written and despite having a huge cast of characters you got to see development from all of them, even if it was minor in some areas.

>>6 so its basically a children's book.

My second review here, Same series, 5th book.

Spoiler alert.
So this book is a story about Wulf the Viking, Talon's bestfriend, who was cursed that everyone will forget about him in their 5 minutes of meeting. Meaning, no one remembers him, and his an immortal. Basically, forever alone. Such a sad fate.

But there are loopholes in the curse. Anyone from his bloodline will be able to remember, but there's only one left, which is Chris, his great great great great nephew. Oķ, maybe I'm losing count here. I'm not sure when Vikings were popular.

Where was I? Oh yeah, I was about to explain the loophole.

Dark-hunters, Apollites, Daimons, and were-beast are able to see him. Only humans would forget him. Practically, his not really alone if he got dark-hunter friends, who all are immortal.

And its also about Cassandra half-human half-apollite. I have a feeling, no not feeling, but the writer is reusing her character names from a different novel series called League series. I really like that series. Its the first series I've read from her, and I just continued reading the rest of her work while I wait for the next book of the league series. Damn, I sidetracked again. So this cassandra girl, is the last apollite that is a direct descendant of Apollo. If she dies, then apollo would die, meaning the sun would die, and everyone would die.

He and she met in a bar, kissed for abit. End of story. But fate was really cruel, more like artemis is too cruel. He and She went to sleep and saw each other in their dream, have sex. The next two days of dream sexing, the girl got pregnant. Want to know why? Cause logic doesn't exist in dreams. Everyone's problem was solve. Wulf will get another person to remember him, and the baby will continue apollo's bloodline.

I forgot to mention that she was supposed to turn 27 on the next 8 months. Meaning everyone would have died if no one will continue apollo's bloodline. She doesn't want to suck humans, so it was a relive for everyone when they found out she was pregnant. And yeah, Apollymi, the destoryer, hated apollo, so she sent trained daimon to kill her. And because apollites only live 27 years, their like the same as as dogs, were for them it only takes 22 weeks of gestation, meaning the baby will able to live before the mother dies.

The rest of the novel is sex scene, being chased, hiding, and action scenes.

Yeah you could say that. It's in the same category as the Percy Jackson series so whatever you classify that as, this is in the same group.

And you said this series is called Dancing with the Devil? I'm adding this to my reading list now because it sounds very interesting.

I figured it was better to start fresh and since most book clubs aren't anything book clubs I felt it was best to just start anew.

Dark Hunter series, #7 "Devil May Cry"

So you asked why I skipped #6? Because its not available in the public library and I'm not planning to buy a book that I'm using as a pass time while waiting for the league books to published.

So here goes:
This is a story about Sin, a sumerian ex fertility god and a dark-hunter, and Katra, daughter of Artemis, the greek goddess of moon and hunt, and Acheron, the god-killer, first dark-hunter, and god of Fate. Sin hated Artemis for taking away his power, and wanted vengeance for causing destructions to his life like the lost of the sumerian patheon and unable to save his daughter. But there are more important things than that, and he need his powers to save the upcoming doom.

Yeah, something with end of the world, when some sumerian monster is released. He needs to reseal it. His brother can only seal it, he then looks for his twin brother but have no idea where. Katra came thinking that he might kill his mother Artemis. She then help him, asked her grandmother's help which is Apollymi, the goddess of destruction, to look for Sin's brother. Ij the end, asked his father's help, who just found out that he got a kid, which is she. Found Sin's brother badly beaten, then go weird on everyone. Katra became vampire, lives of Sin's blood. Destruction nearly happened, a crazy woman escaped from prison, a highly dangerous sleep god let out from prison, and two bad guys got together to make everyone's life miserable. The end. What do you expect me to say? That Sin and Katra have sex for 2 days without sleep? Well that's the usual thing in erotica. And I basically pointed out all the important details, So I'm just going to continue reading the other book. Laters.

16 Name: Janobii : 2015-05-15 11:27 ID:bsST74+o [Del]

XD "the usual thing" of course.

17 Name: jill : 2015-05-18 20:17 ID:ZQDYJLeU [Del]

Ok, I made a mistake "Devil May Cry" is not #7, its #11. Good Reads didn't give me a proper chronological order. I've read lots of spoilers in that books and it really pisses me off. So now I've researched and took my time to look for free online reads for the 5 other books that I skipped. Within 3 days I've read 2 books which is really fastest time.

Dark Hunter series, #5 "Night Play"
Its a story about a werewolf called, Vane. And a human, Bride. Vane's life is really shitty. His parents hate each other, and wanted to kill him. His beloved sister's dead. His Brother in comatose. And he just found out that he got a long lost brother, whose life is nearly same as him. Shit happened. His psychotic mother took Bride and nearly raped by a pack of wolves. I don't really know how to explain it. So here's an excerpt:

“So let me see if I got everything straight from your mother. This,” she turned her hand over to show the mark, “means that we are somehow meant to be husband and wife. But if I refuse you, you spend the rest of your life impotent and alone? But I, on the other hand, am free to live my life however I see fit?”

He nodded.

“It really sucks to be you, doesn’t it?”

Dark Hunter series, #6 "Seize the Night"
Its a story about Valerius, a dark-hunter Roman general. And Tabitha, Amanda's twin sister from the first book "Night Pleasure" Everyone from this story hated the Romans. They conquered Greece and other countries and tortured the people to death. He didn't do anything but his family lineage is something to be scorned about. Zarek is his brother but he hated him for following his father's instruction and tortured him because of his slave's blood. Tabitha is a psychic empathy.

*Sigh* Damn, it's not really my day. Its so hot here. And I only slept 4 hours just to finish those two books.

To keep it short. This is the part where the spoilers I read from "Devil May Cry" happened. A lot of people died. It suppose to be sad, but I wasn't able to cry because of the spoilers.

So here's the excerpt that doesn't really explain anything:
She turned in his arms and seized him. Before he realized what she was doing, she literally flipped him onto the bed and was on top of him, straddling his hips.

Valerius laughed. “You know, a lesser man might actually be afraid of you.”

Laughing, she slung her hair over her shoulders to trail down her back. “Are you afraid of me, Val?”

“No,” he said honestly. “I like that you know what you want and aren’t afraid to take it.”

So people is "Mystery" our final decision for June's Theme?
Or we could make it more specific like read a certain Author's work or add more genre to it if people want to.

18 Name: jill : 2015-05-25 01:53 ID:ZQDYJLeU [Del]

Since, no one answered my question, it would either meant no one is really interested on the theme or no one cares about the book club. Or both.

I've read 4 books since my last post. 2 are not related to the series and the other two are #7 and #8. Its not like I have a lot of time in the world. I actually have a job and go to school every week days. I also do a lot of activities but I prefer to mostly read.

I want to post my review, but no one really cares about it and I'm just going waste time doing so. I already have other sites for that matter, so i'm really required.

Anyway, to those who's still interested for June's theme. It would be Classic Mystery. I don't really know much of the newer mystery novels so I can't help. It would just be a two week event. Read as much mystery books as you can within 2 weeks and post a review. After that will choose another theme. I can make it to be competative and put rankings if you guys want.

19 Name: Janobii : 2015-05-26 08:02 ID:bsST74+o [Del]

You guys have any classical mystery you can recommend me? I don't usually read mystery so I'm at a loss.

20 Name: ARandomSoul : 2015-05-27 16:19 ID:5/31Hd5e [Del]

>>18 ouch so much animosity. I'm pretty sure mystery wins out for a theme. I was under the impression that it would be the whole month not 2 weeks [though I leave that up to Janobii as it is his thread]. Also I think that it would be nice to just have a normal sort of chat about books, not a competition.

>>19 sorry no idea, running into the same problem myself. Though I might go with Sherlock Holmes

21 Name: Janobii : 2015-05-27 20:09 ID:HzpT9eeA [Del]

>>20
Yeah I agree. This is just supposed to be a book club not a book… Olympics. Plus, like I said, the theme thing is optional. But Sherlock Holmes is always a good choice, too bad I already read most of those though.

The theme will last the whole month. It is optional and this is not a competition. You guys may compete amongst yourselves if you want but it is not required of you. This is just supposed to be a relaxed book club and quite frankly not all of us can read that quickly. In the time Jill read four books I only read one because I was so busy. That's just how life is and since this summer will be the same way I think it's beneficial to give people as much time as possible to work through these books.

22 Name: 赤い天使!8NBuQ4l6uQ : 2015-05-27 20:46 ID:hJno8Y5Z [Del]

>>19 Try the Picture of Dorian Gray and the Canterville ghost both by Oscar Wilde. They're both fun to read. The latter one though is very short novel.

23 Name: jill : 2015-05-28 01:56 ID:ZQDYJLeU [Del]

>>21 sorry, I'm used being competetative at anything but recently I don't have anyone to compete to. I might as well stick to video games. Anyway, I only know conan doyle and agatha christi when it omes to classical mystery. This is a chance for any of us to explore different kinds of writing from different authors. So anyone who's really an expert in this area. Pls. Recommend us some books

24 Name: Janobii : 2015-05-28 07:48 ID:bsST74+o [Del]

>>22
Thank you for your recommendation. I'll definitely look into that.

>>23
I'll check with some people today and see if they can find anything.

Review time: The Code Book by Simon Singh.

This book is all about ciphers and cryptography. It starts off in ancient times explaining the basics and slowly works its way up to the cutting edge. Even though the book is a little dated, I found most of the information to still be relevant.

My favorite part of the book was not the actual ciphers themselves [though they were also very interesting], but how the ciphers were used throughout history. For each cipher there is a historical story to go along with it like Alan Turing and enigma [anyone else seen the imitation game?]. There is a fair bit of math involved though I found it to be simple stuff can be skimmed over without getting lost.

Over all if you like math, computers, or secret codes I would highly recommend it.

26 Name: jill : 2015-05-29 00:42 ID:ZQDYJLeU [Del]

>>25 Imitation game is really awesome. If enigma still exist or can be use for public, I would have tried solving it myself.

27 Name: Janobii : 2015-05-29 09:15 ID:bsST74+o [Del]

That sounds like an awesome book!

Oh and I asked around, the most common response I got for "classic mystery" was Nancy Drew and the Hardy Boys. I've heard the Alex Cross series is pretty good too.

28 Name: jill : 2015-06-02 03:01 ID:ZQDYJLeU [Del]

Hello people! Its already June, so the themed book reading is now on. The theme is "Classic Mystery" as all of you know it and as mentioned alot of times in the previous posts. Since the theme last for the entire month, I decided to stack all my book reviews to the end of the month. I will give out a one long post to save time and space. But Its my style, so to any one who wants to post it one by one, go ahead. Happy Reading!
