Okay, I'm planning on posting a few things so I thought I'd put them all under one thread. Bear with me here.

So I came across an idea for an au where everything is black and white until you meet your soul mate and everything goes back to black and white after they die. Thus this story was born.

You always thought everyone was exaggerating when they said that the entire world would change when you met your “one”. But once your eyes locked onto her, you knew it was no exaggeration. The world had been one blur of homogenous grey up until that moment. But as your eyes fell on her, something shifted, something changed. The entire world exploded into something different. Your mind scrambled to find a word that fit, finally grasping onto one you hadn’t understood until then. Colour. The world was in colour.

Your eyes drank in the sight of her. Her dark skin, her eyes a few shades darker than her hair, they were flecked with the colour of the sun. You stood there paralyzed, searching desperately for the right words to say to get her attention. You needn’t have tried. A few seconds after you found her, her eyes grazed over you. For a moment your heart caught in your throat as you thought she would pass over you without anything happening, but then her entire head whipped around to see you. Her eyes widened as her eyes landed on you. For one breathless moment your eyes held hers before a giant smile formed on her lips.

She was the one who took the first step towards you, but then you were moving in tandem. You stopped with a food of space between you, a nagging voice in the back of your head telling you that you were going to miss your appointment, but it was silence.

“Hi, I’m-“

“My name’s-“

You say at the same time. Her laugh is rich like chocolate and smooth like honey. It is the most beautiful thing you ever heard.

“You first,” you say.

“I’m Olivia,” she says with a grin.

“Blair,” you respond.

“I’m supposed to be meeting a friend for coffee. Can you come with me?” she asks.

“Of course,” you answer almost before the words are out of her mouth.

She loops her arm through yours, leading the way onward. “Lucy is going to be so mad at me for finding you so quickly.”

“Is she your best friend?” you ask.

“Yeah, I’ve known Lucy since we were both little. What about you? Who are you going to go gush about me to?”

You blush, because even though you hadn’t thought about it, you aren’t going to stop talking about Olivia once you get started. “It’ll be Will. He’s known who he’s going to be with since second grade so I guess he’ll finally stop looking at me like I’m a puppy he accidentally stepped on.”

She laughs again, dragging a smile out of you. “You’ll have to introduce us. Have you known him forever, too?”

“Yep, he’s the boy next door.”

“Typical. You don’t have a boyfriend you’re gonna have to break up with, do you?” she asks.

You shake your head furiously. “I tried the whole dating thing in high school but it was just so awkward all the time. And I always went for girls anyway. What about you?”

“Just broke up with a guy last week. I feel you on the whole awkward thing, though maybe it wasn’t the whole black and white thing so much as I was trying the wrong people…”

She pulls you a bit closer, “God, you’re beautiful, did you know that?” she asks.

“I-what-no, I wouldn’t call me beautiful,” you sputter out.

She lets out a short laugh, “If you’re not beautiful, I don’t think I could handle someone who is.”

She drags you along laughing as you protest the whole way. You can’t remember ever being happier in your life.

It’s been twenty years since you first met Olivia in that square. Sometimes you wonder what would have happened if your mom hadn’t referred you to that doctor in the first place. You never did end up going back to him. Would you and Olivia run into each other somewhere else? Would you have spent the rest of your life without colour?

You shake your head, telling yourself to forget about it. You still worry sometimes; some of your friends have been breaking up lately. One or the other, or sometimes both, would say that the colour was fading, that they couldn’t live in a world that was slowly turning back to greyscale. You’re just amazed that Olivia hasn’t lost interest.

The two of you spend years falling in love with each other. You learned each other’s rhythm slowly, you whispered secrets in each other’s ears deep into the nights. It still sends shivers up your spine when the tips of her fingers brush the inside of your wrist or trace the lines on your palms. You still jump when she sneaks up behind you in the kitchen to wrap her arms around your waist and press her lips to the back of your neck.

She still giggles when you whisper dirty words in her ear in languages she doesn’t know. She still pretends to be angry when you steal her hair ties to let her hair fall naturally. Sometimes you chase each other around the house with water guns, laughing and shrieking uncontrollably. You still spend hours in the grocery store, arguing about which brand of rice tastes better or which flavor of ice cream will be best for that horror movie you just rented.

You send each other texts saying you miss each other when you’ve only been away from each other for a few minutes. They always have little smiley faces in them that don’t always make sense. When you get each other’s voice mail’s you leave fake angry messages.

The two of you adopted three children. They’re absolutely beautiful. Just thinking about them makes you smile. Your life turned out pretty good despite its rocky start.

You’re running errands, you just picked up your oldest daughter’s homecoming dress from the drycleaners. Glancing down at your list you see that you still need to pick up cereal, your youngest has been complaining about being out for two days now. You think that he could do without the sugary mess passing for a meal, but he’s been good and deserves a treat.

As you reach for the brightly coloured box you notice something is off. The rainbows on the box don’t look right, your hand doesn’t look right. It’s not something you can explain, then it hits you. All the air leaves your lungs like you’ve been punched in the gut. As you slide to the ground the realization sits in. The colour is gone. Once again, the world is just shades of grey.
