I'm just wondering if you can give your personal choice of books which you find yourself lost on its pages. I mean those books that either take you completely out of reality or those that really brings you closer to seeing what reality is. Okay whatever, just recommend any good book and include a summary. Thanks!

Lemme start, this one's pretty good for a debut novel of a young author. Well, it is somehow similar to hunger games(some say equal or better to it but people have their own preferences so I guess I can't really say which is which) but this book's pretty much good in its own way.

DIVERGENT is the story of a dystopian society where every sixteen-year-old must make a choice that will determine the rest of their lives, by debut author Veronica Roth.

In Beatrice Prior’s dystopian Chicago world, society is divided into five factions, each dedicated to the cultivation of a particular virtue—Candor (the honest), Abnegation (the selfless), Dauntless (the brave), Amity (the peaceful), and Erudite (the intelligent). On an appointed day of every year, all sixteen-year-olds must select the faction to which they will devote the rest of their lives. For Beatrice, the decision is between staying with her family and being who she really is—she can’t have both. So she makes a choice that surprises everyone, including herself.

So. I just started this absolutely amazing book that, despite its dark plot, has me laughing my ass off every other page. It's called The Redemption of Althalus, and it was written by David and Leigh Eddings. I highly reccomend this book. It is an adults' novel, so don't read it if you're not comfortable with gore or sex (although I haven't found sex in it yet, I'm sure it'll be in there somewhere). Here's the summary from the back of the book:

"Althalus is an unrepentant rogue and scoundrel. yet of all the men in the world, it is Althalus whow ill become the champion of humanity in its desperate struggle against the forces of an ancient god determined to return the universe to nothingness. on his way to stealing The Book from the House at the End of the World, Althalus collides head-on with his unique destiny - and Dweia, a seductive goddess who just happens to be a cat. Dweia can manipulate time. Unfortunately, so can her evil brother... and he has been using his own dark magic to rewrite history itself. The only people who can stop him are Althalus and a ragtag group of men, women, and children. But they have no reason to trust Althalus - or one another."

Characterization time!

Dweia, better known as Emmy in the book, is just fucking adorable. I don't even know why. She's a lot more mature than the other characters, and although she's always correct Althalus' sharp mouth, she also doesn't stop him when he's being obnoxious. Althalus is so awesome. He's like... I don't know how to explain it. Even though he's the hero of the story, he's so bad. He's evil. He tortures everything that gets in his way. He's lazy and uses everybody else to his advantage. His magic is strong enough that people don't defy them once they encounter it. He also has a huge problem with humans and just about everything they do. He's one of those characters that you love to hate to love.

I highly reccomend this book. It is the Eddings' first stand-alone fantasy novel. It's very dark, very humorous, and in general, straight forward. There are moments when you have to think twice about what just happened, but it's not as confusing as most 'dark' books. It's long (the paperback is 792 pages), but it's worth taking the time to read.

Terry Pratchett's Discworld series. The series is set on a world which is a rotating flat disc with continents and oceans, revolving on the back of 4 giant elephants, all of which are in turn standing on the back of an even more massive giant turtle. I mean, just reading the introduction(s) got me laughing. Full of satire and great wit, to me personally it's the fantasy equivalaet of The Hitchhiker's Guide To The Galaxy (another great series by Douglas Adams), and with over 37 self contained books takes quite a while to read.

Since I'm bad at explaining plots, I'll leave it at that.

I would personally recommend anything by Richard Preston. Most of his books are non-fiction, but read like a novel. “The Cobra Event” was a fiction story about a weaponized disease and biological terrorism. “Demon in the Freezer” is non-fiction and centers around smallpox and the dangers it poses as a biological weapon. The anthrax letters are referenced in “Demon in the Freezer,” but it made me think that biological warfare is by far a lot more devastating than nuclear. I also got into “Ender’s Game” which takes place in the future and a boy being sent to a military training facility for kids with the purpose of fending off an unknown alien race.

Hm I rather like Orson Scott Card's "Hart's Hope". I found out about it in my How to Write Science Fiction and Fantasy book and decided to buy a copy; it's a really interesting story that takes an interesting look at the cost of magic. It's a story of revenge (starting, surprisingly, the "villainess" who is herself a victim of a horrible and unjust crime)and destiny, and the ending, though clifhanger-y, is very good in my opinion. The main character's main powers aren't what most would expect either which makes it amusing to read and see what happens with him.

I recommend Alyson Noel's The Immortals series. The first book is Evermore.
Evermore, AKA The Immortals Series.

Seventeen-year-old Ever survived the car crash that killed her parents, younger sister, and their dog. Now she lives with an aunt in Southern California, plagued not only by survivor guilt but also by a new ability to hear the thoughts of all around her. She tries to tune out all these distractions by keeping her hoodie up and her iPod cranked loud, until Damen, the cute new boy at school, convinces her to come out of her shell. Damen, however, is frighteningly clever—and has the strange ability to produce tulips from nowhere and disappear himself at critical moments. Noël (Saving Zoë, 2007) creates a cast of recognizably diverse teens in a realistic high-school setting, along with just the right tension to make Ever’s discovery of her own immortality—should she choose it—exciting and credible.

I myself have finished this series, besides the side story novels about Ever's sister, Riley. I cried, laughed, screamed, and gasped at reading this book; if that even makes sense.
Books in order:
1. Evermore
2. Blue Moon
3. Shadowland
4. Darkflame
5. Night Star
6. Everlasting

Fuck you guys. Now I have to actually do more work and type up a recomendation for all of you fuckers who don't know good shit.

I used to hate reading. I wouldn't read anything. There were a couple books that I thought were readable, but nothing that really grabbed me. Then my sister handed me the first book in a series called, "Song of the Lioness". The book was called Allana.

It was written by Tamora Pierce, my favorite author, and there are a total of four books in this series. I've read every book by her, met her, and got her to sign a book.

Okay, back to the plotline. There are twins that are the son and daughter of a noble family. They're the only children. The son, Thom, was being sent off to be a knight and the daughter, Alanna, sent off to be a lady. The thing is, Alanna wanted to be a lady knight and Thom wanted to be a sorcerer. There were tales of Lady Knights in the past, but ladies currently aren't aloud to be a knight.

Thom and Alanna wanted their dreams so bad, that Thom forged two knew letters saying that they were twin boys. Thom was going to be a sorcerer, and 'Alan' was going to become a knight. Their dad was always studying his scrolls, so he wouldn't pay attention to any letters the schools sent. If he wrote back, then they could use the same excuse for their names getting mixed up. They had to threaten their caretakers to get them to allow it.

I don't want to spoil the rest, so I'll give you an overview. The rest is about Alanna's struggles to become a knight. She runs across many issues along the way. She is scrawnier than the guys, so she isn't as fit. The guys was a pond that they swim naked in, she begins developing breasts and starts her cycles, and manny many more.

This is a Fantasy story with a touch of romance, all straight unfortunately. There are many more interesting complications that she had to face, but I didn't want to spoil the fun for you all. I hate romance novels, so I wouldn't like this series if it was more than just a bit of flirting extremely rarely.

Read it and love it my friends! Love the amazingness!

No one's mentioned TMI or TID? Now's my chance!
Cassandra Clares series the Mortal Instrunments(City of Bones, Ashes, Glass, Fallen Angels, Lost Souls, and (Soon to be released) Heavenly Fire) is an urban fantasy with some romance. This is probably my favorite series due to the original plot lines (major and characters), the characters have the right amount of quirk without being Mary Sue's/Stu's and it is incredibly well written.
The same goes for the Prequel series, The Infernal Devices(Clockwork Angel, Prince, (Soon to be released) Princess) is also amazing.
Her upcoming book series, the Dark Artifices (Lady Midnight) also shows promise.
The series are all about demon hunters a.k.a shadow hunters who mark themselves up in order to help with their powers. I cant say much without giving it away but they're really good. CoB is even being made into a movie.

One of my favorite stories is 'Prophecy' by Elizabeth Haydon. I can't really tell you why, but the characters where brilliant. The world was rather generic, but the plot makes up for that. A warning, It has quite a few sex scenes, which is probably why my 14 year old self took to it so fondly. It is the sequel to 'rhapsody' which I never read, but would love to do so. Still, you will enjoy 'prophesy' without it.

Metro 2033 by Dmitry Glukhovsky. Yes he is Russian. There is a sequel titled Metro 2034. For the plot, just use Wikipidea, it is accurate.

Another book I would recommend would be The Road by Cormac McCarthy. It is a tale of Father and Son walking east, to the coast. America is left in ashes behind them, and all they can hope to do, is to keep walking until they reach the coast.

Born Too Short: The Confessions of an Eighth Grade Basket Case.

Although I'd read this just two years back, I still remember the author, the story, and the characters. The story follows Matt Greene, who is 5'1", a nerd, invisible to girls, and his best friend is the biggest stud in New York City.

The book was enjoyable to me, and I don't think they're gonna be another book quite like it. If you can, check it out sometime.

The Mistborn series by Brandon Sanserson.
A street urchin with mysterious abilities is recruited by a thieving crew plotting to rob the Lord Ruler and overthrow the Final Empire (well, that's just the first book, but I don't want to spoil anything). The characters are great and Brandon Sanderson is a fabulous writer! Demon in my View by Amelia Atwater-Rhodes is a great book for people who love fantasy. It is a very short book, less than 300 pages, but it's amazing. Basically, a high school girl finds out that the stories she's been writing for years are true, and she's being lured in by a vampire, and a witch is trying to keep her away. I don't want to explain any more so I don't spoil it, but it's so good it kept me reading until I finished it in one night.

Definitely have to recommend Catch-22. It's a really unique book with some interesting themes. I'll try to summarize it, but this probably won't explain the book awfully well.
In the later half of World War II, a bombardier by the name of Yossarian is stationed with his squadron on the island of Pianosa by the Italian coast. Yossarian and his fellow soldiers live a nightmarish existence defined by violence, seen as nothing but resources in the eyes of their bureaucratic superiors. Said superiors are constantly raising the number of missions that they are required to fly before being sent home, so that no one is ever sent home. In the meantime, Yossarian believes that everyone's out to get him and tries his best to keep away from all things dangerous.
Throughout Yossarian's struggle with faked illnesses and crazy teammates, other side-stories begin to unfold concerning the people around him. Yossarian's choices become limited, putting him in a (I'm a sack of shit for writing this please don't hurt me) catch-22.
So yeah, go read it.

Recently I fell for The Hunger Games trilogy. It's meant for younger readers, but nevertheless it's worth giving it a chance, as it's very mature and refreshing because of the content.
My all time love is The Vampire Chronicles by Anne Rice and I recommend it the most, the same goes for any Haruki Murakami's book. The man is a genius and you feel like he was staring down at your soul when you read his words.

For some reason I thought I'd posted on this thread before...Well I guess I need to post twice as much to make up for not posting before.

>>15 Tamora Pierce is one of my favorite authors (I got to meet her once, it was awesome). I read the Alanna series, but it's not my favorite one by her. I guess I'll always have a soft spot for the Circle of Magic series because I read them first when I was back in middle school. But they aren't on top of my list either. That honour is held by the Beka Cooper trilogy. It takes place 200 years before the Alana series and follows the story of a young police officer (called "dogs" throughout the series) named Beka. Beka is painfully shy, an devoted officer, and can speak to the ghosts that ride on the backs of pigeons.

Any books by Neil Shusterman. I can personally recommend the Skinjacker Trilogy (Everlost, Everwild, and Everfound) and the Unwind series (incomplete as of this post).

The Skinjacker trilogy follows Allie and Nick, two teenagers who met after they died in the same car crash. The two prevented each other from making to the light by crashing into each other as they both sailed through their windshields. The pair learn to cope with their new place in the afterlife. The afterlife, or Everlost as the dead call it, is peopled entirely with children and teenagers, adults just don't get lost on the way to the light. Soon, Nick and Allie find themselves fighting against all sorts of monsters, from the shape-shifting McGill to the self appointed queen Mary Hightower.

In the years before the Unwind series, the second American Civil War was fought between pro-choice and pro-life. In the end, the decision to outlaw abortion in favour of "unwinding" was made. Between the ages of 13 and 18, if you no longer want your child, you can send them into taken apart, piece by piece. The parts are then given to people who need them. Need a new heart? We have those. Broke an arm and don't want to wait for it to heal? Take a new one! Your kid is dumb? We have these brain cells from a smart kid from an orphanage. The story follows three "unwinds": Connor, a "difficult" 16 year old, Risa, who wasn't a good enough piano player to be considered worth keeping by the orphanage, and Lev, a 13 year old "tithe" the child of religious extremists who pledged to give their tenth child back to God. The three are brought together when Connor causes a car accident on the freeway. While Connor and Risa fight back against the system every step of the way, Lev actually wants to be unwound.

Redshirts by John Scalzi. Written to make fun of scifi tv shows, Redshirts documents the lives of the crew of the Intrepid a ship in the Universal Union. After joining the crew of the Intrepid, Ensign Andrew Dahl and his friends realize that (1) every Away Mission involves a lethal encounter with alien forces, (2) bridge crew always survives (but at least one is always injured), and (3) one redshirt is always killed.

I may or may not add to this list at a later date.

I have found a book that when I first started reading it, I immediately assumed this was another boring fantasy story. But this book surprised in me in ways I would never forget. It is all about adventure, culture, and love. Believe me, it sounds like the next hollywood ruined film. However, while although this book shows those qualities, it shows them in ways you would never expect. I must say you will be slow in turning the page at first, but soon you will not want to put it down and be eager to know what happens next. This is a story that has the usual prince and princess, but shows a side of the royal life that the eye does not see. I appreciate the surprises from this story. And I wish that you read it. It may be light reading, but its a good story nonetheless. It is called Dragonfly by Julia Golding.

I love you guys. Any of you (or someone who reads this reply) know any author or book with a style that resembles Murakami? I am in love with everything he writes and am afraid I'll go insane after finishing his books if I find no replacement.
Thanks

Most ignored thread, yet most needed.

Seriously, stop making whole new threads that will just get pushed down and forgotten. Post all recommendations here so people can make a checklist out of this.

>>43 It's a trilogy? I didn't know that.

Well anyway I would also like to recommend 1Q84. It's a good out-of-reality story. So definitely worth reading.

Try also The Night Circus by Erin Morgenstern.

And also try Game of Thrones books by George RR Martin.

Good luck trying reading new books! ^_^

The Starbound Trilogy is a great series. The second instalment, This Shattered World, is just as great as "These Broken Stars" and is great balance between romance and action. Although I haven't read This Night So Dark, I am sure it as great as the other books.

The Lunar Chronicles by Marissa Meyer are great. It's a YA futuristic sci-fi adaption of a bunch of fairytales. The cast is diverse and the protagonists are all female leads. The first book is Cinder in which Cinderella is a cyborg in New Beijing.

the mortal instruments (6 books) and the infernal devices (3 books) by cassandra clare are good books. they aren't dystopian futures but they're about these people called shadowhunters (who normal human's don't know about of course lmao) and they basically hunt demons.
the infernal devices is the prequel to the mortal instruments so i'd recommend you read that first but it doesn't really matter (i read tmi before tid because tmi was published before, didn't really change anything)
if you're looking for a dystopia maybe try the gone series by michael grant. its about where kids under the age of 16 (i think) are separated from the rest of the world in this dome thing and they have to try and survive. plus some of the kids get x-men powers. i haven't finished the gone series so i can't really give you an opinion for all of it but the first books are good.

"Like water for Chocolate" by Laura Esquivel

am not much for love stories but I love how it merges fantasy into a world that's so riddled in chaos and realistic simplicity. The depiction of the time in which the book was based upon and the description of the food involved is just scrumptious. Didn't know I'd like it as much as I though I would haha

Read 'The Little Prince'. Go have a try, it's worth it. Even though it's for children, there's real deep meaning inside it.
