Inkheart (17)

Ok so I read this amazing series known as the Inkheart series. It's a trilogy of books called "Inkheart", "Inkspell" and "Inkdeath". It's one of my favorite series. I want to know if you guys like it and your thoughts on it. I'd also like to know your favorite character. Have you seen the movie? Did you only ever see the movie? What do you think of the movie compared to the books?
Honestly, I think the books were way better than the movie. They totally screwed the ending and they wont make a sequel for the other two books.
My favorite character is definitely DUSTFINGER. He's just so AWESOME. Next to him would be Basta.
What are your thoughts?

I actually have read Inkheart, and I know of several other Dollars who have read it/the trilogy.

So I know the basic plot, the characters, etc. Everyone else however, looks at this thread and goes "what the hell is this?"

So I'm going to refrain from commenting until you put in a summary or something of the book so that people who haven't had the pleasure of reading it may become interested in doing so.

>>2 I really didn't want to spoil it for people who haven't but here is a summary of the first book, Inkheart:

Mortimer (Mo) Folchart is a bookbinder and has the rare gift of reading things and characters out and into books (he does not have control over what goes in or out) when reading aloud. He discovered his talent while reading a book to his friend a dead cat came out of the book that he was reading to his friend when he was a young child. One night he read a book called Inkheart to his wife, Teresa. Mo accidentally read Resa into Inkheart and read characters out of Inkheart (Capricorn, Basta, Dustfinger and his pet marten Gwin.) Meggie was 2 years old and can't remember her mother at all.
10 years later, Dustfinger comes to Mo (known as Silvertongue) to warn him that Capricorn wants all copies of Inkheart destroyed so they can't travel between books. Mo, Meggie (now 12) and Dustfinger move in with Meggie's great-aunt Elinor. While staying with Elinor, Capricorn kidnaps Mo and takes him to his village, a little town in Italy.
Capricorn wants Mo to read out treasure from books. While reading, Mo accidentally reads out a young boy called Farid from the book One Thousand And One Nights. Meanwhile, Dustfinger rescues Mo, Elinor, Meggie and Farid.
Now that they have escaped, Mo decides to visit the author of Inkheart (Fenoglio) to get his copy of the book so he can read Teresa back. Sadly, Fenoglio doesn't have a copy, his only copy was stolen. Mo, Elinor, Dustfinger and Farid had gone for a while when Meggie and Fenoglio are captured by Capricorn's men.
As prisoner, Meggie soon discovers that she has the same gift of reading characters out of books. It started when she read Tinkerbell out of a story book Darius (a stammering man, formerly Capricorn's reader) had left behind. Basta finds out when he sees Tinkerbell and Capricorn makes her read out his assassin Shadow.
Meanwhile, Mo, Elinor, Farid and Dustfinger try to save Meggie. Meggie meanwhile finds a mute maid of Mortola's called Resa who she believes is her mother. She was read out by Darius.
With the help of Fenoglio, Meggie reads out the Shadow and makes him kill Capricorn. But to replace the Shadow, Fenoglio is read into Inkheart. Basta and Mortola escape.
In the end, Mo, Resa and Meggie decide to live at Elinor's house. Dustfinger, now really homesick, takes Mo's copy of Inkheart.

Damn, you really go all out. You didn't to put up a full summary of the first book due to spoilers, but something like the excerpt on the back of the book - Something catch attention, if that makes sense.

Anyway, I haven't gotten around to reading InkSpell/Death, mainly because I haven't found them in paper/hardback yet. I loved the focus on reading that Inkheart held though, and the effects of literature coming to life under the tongues of exquisite story tellers.

It really gave this amazing perspective on the old saying that "a good story teller can make the world come alive." and I found myself loving it because of that.

My favorite character was definitely Dustfinger. I disliked his depiction in the Movie, mainly because I can't help but kind of imagine him as a non-chalant badass. It's not his character, but it's how I always read him.

The brutal presentation of him being something of an easily intimidated coward irritated me... And to top it off, they cut out his fire-performance at the aunt's house! I was -waiting- to see that!

Same here. I was so excited to see that performance that was the main reason I watched the movie. The video game had at least an attempt at it.
I want to write books even more than I did before from reading this series. I keep reading it over and over again (I'm currently on Inkspell for what feels like the billionth time)
I'll admit I was a little skeptical about the first book when my mom got it for me for my 12th birthday. But after reading it, I was practically obsessed. Then I got the other two books sooner or later.
I read them so much that Inkheart and Inkspell had their bindings damaged and they were my only books I bothered getting repaired. That's how much I treasure them.
But the books are at regular bookstores. they shouldnt be hard to find. and if you cant, try amazon.com. They are definitely there. You will LOVE them, I assure you.

There's a videogame...? Holy shit, I can only imagine how badly that played out. InkSpell doesn't seem like the kind of book that transitions well between mediums.

the game was OK. and its actually pretty good, Inkspell

Referring to the OP:

I read the entire series, and saw the movie Inkheart. I'm a firm believer in reading the book first, if at all possible, and seeing the movie butcher a book I thoroughly enjoyed felt like a dagger to the eye. So, all of my opinions of Inkheart will be entirely based on the book.

My favorite character was, in fact, Dustfinger. Not entirely because of his personality and roles throughout the series, but mostly because of his trade as a Fire-Eater. I'm a huge pyro, and the things I read in those books pertaining to fire set my imagination alight with what I consider beautiful flames, tricks, and possibly useful techniques.

My second favorite character would have to be Violante. Her personality, history, and circumstances were ones that I enjoyed reading about. As for Fenoglio, the bastard just pissed me off regularly (As he was probably intended to).

Of the three, however, the 2nd book is probably my favorite. Inkspell was the one that I've re-read the most, followed closely by Inkheart.

I didn't really ever have much to say about Violante. She was a good character, sure, but I wasn't that interested in her. My favorite was the first, Inkheart because it had the most fairy-tale based topics. My second is Inkspell. It's easy for one of my friends to tell because my copy of Inkdeath was my only book of the trilogy not to be harmed because i hardly ever re-read it

I love the Inkheart series! Yet, I havent had much time to read, so Im not even finished with the whole thing. Buuuut...my favorite character has to be Dustfinger. Next, I like Mo......YEP!

i only liked the first one

Somebody stole my copy of Inkdeath... >.>
But same, Dustfinger is definitely my favorite. He was just really cool to me when I was little. The pet marten, the fire thing, his name, that was all really appealing to me. When I got older, and read the last two books, I had other reasons for liking him. He's such a real character. He's a coward but not a coward... He's brave but not a stereotypical hero character.
This series is good with that kind of thing. Speaking of unconventional heroes, the Bluejay is awesome. I love the way that whole thing worked out. :)

I love those books, though I wasn't a huge fan of the ending.
I hate how bad the movie screwed things up. But at least it wasn't as bad as the Eragon movie.

I loved them I only got to inkspell I'm looking for the last book but of course I can never find it

I read the whole series last year and loved it. Dustfinger is, by far, my favorite. (Fangirl~)
The movie SUCKED. Mo was portrayed ok, but the rest of them... Well,I wasn't a fan of. I'm comparing it to the books, of course. When I'm not doing that, it was an okay movie. Not great, but not awful.
