Put an exclamation mark after your name. Then type in a password, like you would do for a normal forum.
Tripcodes are used, in this case, to identify someone from someone else who's using the same name as them.
It's one of two ways, the other way would be the ID next to the time stamp. But the ID is tricky, for people who have a dynamic IP. For those who have a static, then it's all good.

Well, if your name is not common like... Kira or Shizuo, then yes, it's not necessary. But if it is, then yes, it's necessary. Also, it looks pretty neat too. You could come up with a unique looking tripcode.
