final fantasy 14 is really fun. The tutorial is long and people find the first grind boring but i loved it all and the expansions are amazing. You can play the free trial up to lvl35 and decide if you wanna buy it. I really dont know if there is any good "free" ones so i'll keep an eye on this thread too.

I agree with itsyaboime Final Fantasy 14 is (in my opinion) one of the if not the best current MMOs, the tutorial section is stupid long which can be a big turn off, but that entire section falls under the free trial section so you don't lose anything for giving it a go.

Try playing Monster Hunter World, it's more of a JRPG than an MMORPG

If you are able to pay the subscription, then as the others say Final Fantasy XIV is a very good game, easily one of the best mmos out today. I'd like to defend the early parts of the game though, as its virtues are very often not spoken of, and that throws lot of people off on playing, which is a shame. Depending on what you want out of a game, the "base" game (A Realm Reborn) can be just as fun and engaging as the later expansions. It's storyline is definietly worth paying attention to, if you're into that, and carries a lot of the early game. Lots of the sidequests are fun and are worth doing for the writing alone.
FFXIV's world is also one of the best written fantasy worlds in mmos. You can also change your class at any time, so if you discover you don't enjoy a class, you can just go to a guild and try another. So you don't have to do everything over again, and there's no real need for alts either. A Realm Reborn also does a very good job of explaining everything for new players, so if you just pay attention you should have no problem adjusting to the games' system. The cash shop is only for cosmetics, no p2w.

I've had a hard time getting into it, but a lot of people love The Elder Scrolls Online. It's buy to play, with a very big population. It has action-y gameplay, where you're primarily using 5 skills at a time (with 2 tabs, so 10 in total). There's a lot of custimization options, bc a class isnt limited to one set of gear or weapons. It's pretty similar to the other Elder Scrolls games. There's also 8 races to choose from, 9 if you pay a bit. Character custimization isn't very good though imo, unfortunaetly. I didn't fancy the story or worldbuilding much, but it might work for you. Basically you have to stop an evil necromancer from destroying the world, while getting 3 factions to stop going to war with each other to deal with this threat.
My biggest personal gripe with this game, is its cashshop. The devs kinda push it in your face while playing, and while you dont strictly have to buy anything, all content beyond the base game you must buy, despite ESO being b2p. And I don't mean expansions, I mean smaller additions to the game (small new map, storyline, crafting stuff mostly), which most other games that are b2p and with subscriptions provide so long as you pay for expansions. It also has a lootbox system, so watch out for that.

Guild Wars 2 is also a very popular game with a big population. Gameplay-wise it's somewhat similar to The Elder Scrolls Online, where you have 2 tabs with 5 "main" skills on each. It's a high-fantasy type game where you can choose from 5 races, each with their own "intro" story. The storyline is so-and-so, its often not as enganging as it could be, but a lot of people enjoy it all the same. It's more fast paced than ESO, and the base game is free to play. It has a big pvp scene, with different types of pvp. Lots of gameplay customization, limited aesthetic customization. You have to pay for hairstyles, spececial faces, and so on, but beyond that the cash shop is pretty decent.

If you're more into action games, Blade & Soul and Tera are worth checking out. Both are free. Blade & Soul is a wuxia/martial arts game, while Tera is fantasy. Initially they're both very fun games, but have sadly been mismanaged in the west. Both are known for having p2w elements. Blade & Soul has had problems with censorship, and the story/world has been ruined by bad translators who rewrote everything. This is really bad bc the original story is one of the best there is for mmos, and althought its short, can easily rival the above mentioned games. Tera is like wow, with a lot of "contained" storylines based on region. It's kinda been abandoned over the years, but Tera has neat lore and interesting ideas. Both have a distinct artstyle that can take a while getting used to. B&S has great customization, Tera ok but not the best. Still, they're both free games, are fun for a while, and are worth checking out. They are often considered to have the best action gameplay of all mmos, so on the gameplay front are really fun.
