I was speaking with a friend the other day and she doesn't believe that visual novels count as real games. What do you all think?

Well technically it is an interactive game genre. So yeah it is a game. The fact that almost what you do in the game is read, it is still considered a game.

The real question is when is the line between visual novel and a game with visual novel aspects happen. alot of VNs these days have gameplay elements such as class trials or just having more freedom with where your character moves. I feel a good example is the mobile game Fate Grand Order. It has a large amount of VN aspects since that is where its roots are from but it also primarily has alot of gameplay elements, such as fights, and gatchas
