There isn't a Serious Sam thread already? Kay.
Serious Sam is Croteam's epic legacy. With 9 games currently produced, one game announced and multiple remakes of the earlier titles, Serious Sam has proven itself to be a major success in the run n gun genre.
The series revolves around 'Serious' Sam Stone, who is pretty much Earth's last hope. The games feature in a non-sequential story line that involves the recent games actually proceeding the original productions. The common element of all these games are lots and lots of heavy weapons, (in general) the setting of Egypt for the levels, and enemies called the 'Mental' an alien race that has been at war with Earth since ancient times, and have recently beaten earth into a heavy retreat. These aliens show themselves in different ways, from screaming kamikazes with bombs for hands, to strange skeleton dinosaurs that have strange habit of throwing balls and chains at you.
The gameplay is pretty much literally as follows:
>Find weapon
>Use weapon to slaughter alien hordes
>Find bigger weapon
>Use bigger weapon to slaughter even more alien hordes
>rinse and repeat
It's not everyone's cup of tea, and even I find that I have to be in the right mood, but man is it a shit load of fun.
The games are also big fans of collectibles. Serious Sam 3 (the most recent release), in particular, features costumes, early weapon bonuses, score increasing secrets, and many more benefits given for simply exploring the level with detail.
Serious Sam 3 encourages cooperative play in a big way, too. With the ability to host a game that carries up to 16 people, it allows for large group run-throughs of the game. In fact, it's nearly impossible to beat it on the hardest level of difficulty without having at least 3 other people around.
Anyway, if you're looking for a retro styled, mass-mayhem shooter, put Serious Sam at the top of your list.
